Humor is a great way to dispel tension. His act created a whole new dimension for golf. Jack definitely is the greatest if all time but not always when he played Lee. Perhaps some of it was the personality clash. I too am sort of a shy personality. And the old back slapping, life of the party image is something that I tend to resent. While many people attribute Lee's humor to his Mexican heritage? I see more of a TEXAN in him. The personality of other famous Texans. Like musicians Buddy Holly and Willie Nelson. Though Willie is more sly than back slapping. It's that persona of the "Bigger Thsn Life" Texan more than his Latino background. They tell tall tales. Humor a way of escaping the drudgery of long days picking cotton in 110° heat.

@@pb12661es by modern teaching standards his swing was abnormally upright and his absurdly far forward ball position was indeed unusual and difficult to copy. In his book “Golf My Way” Nicklaus goes into great detail about this himself. He played the ball so far forward in his stance it was literally inside his left heel with every club in the bag. Golfers who attempted to copy this method robbed themselves of considerable distance because they added unnecessary loft to the clubs and lacked the pure athleticism and sheer strength Nicklaus possessed. Ninety nine percent of tour pros in the modern era play the ball much further back to more easily compress it at impact. Greg Norman is the only golfer that had any success in copying Jack’s techniques. No one was ever able to copy Trevino’s swing. So yes, both of them had unique and highly technical golf moves. This is widely known among golf professionals and teachers and is nothing new. There are many golfers in recent years who have unusual moves through the ball. Henrik Stenson is one of the best examples.

Jack had a great swing. You are right. he was an underrated ball striker. I watched him in person for years. I've seen all the greats from the 70's until present. The only guy, IMO, that matched him in his ball striking ability was Greg Norman. Watson wasn't far behind those two.

If he really think that Jack isn't a "good man" you are really clueless. Whether a person has certain advantages as children doesn't mean squat. The true measure of a man is all about what they become and how they live their life. Jack was raised correctly and worked his ass off for his success the same way Trevino had to do. Yes, Trevino is a bad ass and did it the "hard way" but it isn't like Jack's last was Biden. LOL

@dschultz6072 But I have a great Shell video from a 1996 match between Jack and Lee, where in the pre match interview Jack says that Trevino and Hogan were the two best ball strikers ever, and he was not sure which one was a better ball striker. High praise from Jack. (Trevino went on to clean Jack's clock in the match, hitting almost every fairway and making lots of birdies, before inexplicably giving a bunch of strokes back by repeatedly hacking away at a ball he should have taken a drop.)

Deceptive title! Lee had street sense. He knew he had the worst of it playing Nicklaus. So, he improvised! He talked Jack out of at least two tournaments. In one Major they played together, Jack told him, "Listen let's just play and not do any talking," because he realized that was how Trevino was beating him. He was breaking his concentration with all the banter. Trevino replied, "Don't worry. You play quietly. I'll take care of the talk for the both of us." Trevino, being a predator, saw he was getting to Jack and stepped his game up to beat him in a couple of head-to-head matches. Two of the greatest ever! Both genuine characters, too, rather than the robots on the tour today. Who was the best? Day in and day out over two long careers, no one matches up to Nicklaus. He's the greatest ever!

Only history will tell, and people will count how many times a particular players name, is etched on that silver claret jug, or US Open trophy. How many Green jackets are in each players wardrobe, that is what matters. A player can only achieve true greatness, if he finds form, just at the right time. How many top players have tried to win a major, or even stay in contention to win one. If career earnings are anything to go by, then the Scot, Colin Montgomerie should be ranked as one of the greatest players, yet he never won or was in contention for any of the majors.

If Trevino was young now he would have more majors than Rory and Spieth combined. If Jack were young now he would be as long as Dechambeau is and he would win as often as Tiger did in his prime. Tiger never dealt with a prime Palmer Nicklaus Watson Casper Player Weiskopf Miller Watson Norman and Seve. They were really good and did not accept second place.
