Bird's Defense: Ruy Lopez Chess Opening
The Bird's Defense is a solid line in the Ruy Lopez that starts with 1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bb5 Nd4. Black looks to get their very active in the center of the board and threaten the white bishop. While this isn't the most common line in the Ruy Lopez it is still very solid.

Can you explain what to do if after king's gambit the opponent does a classical defense except instead of Bishop to c5 they move it to d6?
very helpful! thanks!
I'm not sure about the pawn push on the a file @5:11 as white always has a3, ba2 which is a very common position for white in the ruy Lopez and a comfortable pressure diagonal for the light squared bishop always pressuring the weak f7 square on the kings side. Thoughts?

You will see this among lower rated players who always en paasant whenever possible, usually en passant isn't the best option
That is pretty good, I like it. Go on....
damn this is one hell of a defense
Watching this lets me know how much of chess i have 4got...i had a opening that was so good and unorthodox... every new player I played said the same thing I never seen someone open like that that I couldn't beat... I pretty much mastered it it was my go-to opening when a player was much stronger than me.... over the years I can't remember what I did to counter the unorthodox opening so I stopped using it.. with that being said I really wish while I was using that opening that I could have played someone that was a known great player to see if it was as good as I thought...

At 10:07 why not Nxf7???? The knight i threatening the rook
@hughhuytruong5284
3 жыл бұрын
I don't think it's a good move because if knight takes the f7 pawn, queen can take the e4 pawn putting the king in check forcing him to move his king, ridding him of the potential to castle. then the queen can reposition to c6 attacking the bishop. if knight takes rook, queen recaptures bishop, and his knight is rendered somewhat useless in the corner making it easy to recapture later. it's like a rook trade for a bishop and a knight. idk though

Take with the bishop and black has a centeral pawn fine development and a good game. Or check with the queen and force white to make their bishop terrible on e2 then retake. Taking en passent is really just a move someone plays because it isn't immediately losing

The best way is to take the knight then reroute your other knight to take the pawn and use the fact that your bishop still has its f3 diagonal to threaten some checkmates Birds defense is horrible
I discovered this by accident. I thought - if this works as anti-Trompowsky, why not trying it for Spanish? Then turned out engine very much likes it. Thanks for some cool ideas

your explanation are complicated! I hope you explain it step by step at the begining...
7:40 Bd3 looks great for white 10:00 o-o looks like the best option 10:25 it's not that bad, white can manage 10:35 white can play Nf7 and then Ng5 protect e4 12:00 Qe2 is a fine sacrifice that pretty much force an exchange of queens
Ka ka kaw!
If white played e5, you suggested black play d5 and threaten the white bishop on c4. Why wouldn’t white trade pawns and play en passant to d6? Yes white loses a pawn but it even material and Bishop is still on c4

Hiiiii kevin
I am the Greatest ! Ruy Lopez. Thanks for this Video, I hope you can make some more opening tricks by the great one ,the Art and Science of Chess!!!! Thanks!
Disappointing video and I'll explain why. Kevin spends roughly 30 seconds discussing the mainline, which runs 4.Nxd4 exd4 5.O-O, instead spending most of his time on sidelines that rely on white making absolutely terrible moves. For example, more than two minutes spent analysing the blunder 4.Nxe5??, which is played in less than 1% of games and has never been seen at master level. In the mainline after 5.O-O Kevin suggests the move 5...c6 for black (which is credible), but only briefly mentions the theoretical continuation 6.Bc4 Nf6. Instead of analysing this position, he once again turns his attention to analysing the sub-optimal move 6.Be2, which is played in less than 4% of master level games.

Thing is, Its not good for someone above 1300. (They have a course on it) Also the average ruy lopez player mostly has a mindset to win, They dont care about what they saw in other variations. They play their perfect prep smh.
This defence is just bad if white doesn't fall for taking on e5, everyone plays this against me in lower rated games and loses badly lol. Good if you think you can trick your opponent but there are way cooler, more serious defences against the ruy lopez, the berlin, the arkhangelsk, etc.
