About this video:
In this video I'll show you 4 ways to trick your opponents when they play the Ruy Lopez defense, also known as the Spanish Game. Two of the traps arise after the Berlin defense, one comes after Alapin's defense, and one comes after the Bird's defense. But ALL of them are super clever and will leave your opponent scratching their heads in confusion. The Fishing Pole Trap and the Mortimer trap are just two of these 4 clever traps.

I was just studying theory of Ruy Lopez, and I finished my studying with these traps, I feel like a master of that opening now

Opening theory is important because it does give you an advantage. But I will say that tactics are more important than opening theory.
Literally just won using the fishing pool trap. Amazing feeling. Thanks Nelsi!!!!!!

Great content, explained well. Great stuff!
Awesome, thanx! ✌️
I like your vid...str8 to the point with no long's intros and talking...thanks
thank you for this video, i love the fishing pole trap. has helped me quite a few times
Niceeee trapssss brooo will totally check them out
thanks man really helpful
Hey, Nelson! I can use these!! Thanks!!
After successfully trying the Blackburn Shilling Gambit, I want to try these traps against one of the most common openings. Tried with the Berlin’s defense, so to have either 1st or 2nd trap options. The second one worked well, nice and easy 💪
Very helpful
Beware - at 1:49 if white sneakily plays Nc4 and you take the bishop, Nd6# is a nasty smothered mate.
Very useful
The Mortimer Trap at 1:50 has another trick after c6 worth mentioning, that being Nc4 and if cxb5?? Nd6#. To refute it, Black just needs to stay alert and stop the mate with Ng6 or d6, which still wins a piece.
👏great learning material - hope you will publish some books in the future. Definitely a fan of yours!!
Thank you very much! My friend is using the ruy lopez against me so basically I lose everygame when he does it. Now that I now on how to counter ruy lopez, I can now win. Thank you very much😊
wow, thats great
nice traps ! and your video is short and time saving !
Superb
Great
The last trap, what if white play Re1? Qxe1 I guess? The third trap, never see that before, thanks!
Great video! BTW mistakes happen but rook to e1 forces a queen exchange in the 4th trap and white is only down a rook at the end of the game... So the threat isn't "save queen" or "checkmate" as you said. Anyways the 4 traps seem very useful. Thank you for letting us learn with these useful videos :) Edit: i analysed the 4th trap on stockfish guys its a losing position for black, do not try it in a game as i said in earlier comment rook e1 is a completely valid move and apparently it loses you the queen.. it does not force a queen trade. If you played that you'll lose your Queen.

ig u can go with blackburne after Ne5
@bidyasihnadakua6573

First you take the queen if rook to e1 and then fork the king and rook with the move nf2.
@TheSportman-1
Жыл бұрын
This is lies. Black is winning. U simply capture the rook on e1 with the queen and white recaptures with king. Then black captures the white qeeun with the knight

Have you done one on the colle opening yet
I know there's another trap in the Exchange Variation that's quite similar to the Fishing Pole, except that Black offers a bishop instead of a knight on g4.

Yes. Same idea except that you fork the B on f3
How to counter the counters? Can you make a video on that?
@LeoAr37

Just don't play the moves that precede the trap lol
I just fell into mortimer before I watch it xD
At the end of the video, what if white plays Kc3? Is exchanging queens the next move?
wow i beat my rival with the 1st trap

Awesome!
No1 is worthless. Abolutely no one captures the knight and it simply remains there in a weird position and you don't really know how to continue. As you say the castling is the most common move for white so would be nice to find more alternatives after the castling in the berlin defence.
In the last trap what if king moves to F2 instead of D1 or F1 ..?
Birds defense must be on the lower end strategically to countering ruy Lopez? Any insight

True. More often than not white will simply take your knight and you're positionally weaker than you were before.
2:45 queen b4 pinning the queen will force a queen trade and then you lose a rook

B4??? You're drunk!
3:38 - after Knight to D4, they always take my Knight with their Knight. I'll have to set the board up and figure out what to do exactly after that.

Nxd4 is actually the best move for white, and the trap is not working. Stable and routine players don't fall into chesstraps, unless in short of time or blitz maybe...
@CerealDust-nStuff

@@tobias4411 - Yes I agree, it really seems like Nxd4 is pretty solid.
4th trap is not correct. At he end white can move his rook attacking your queen which is lined up with your king. Your toast and not the other way around. Lol. That being said Nelson is a great youtube chess teacher. I love his videos.

If Re1 then Qxe1 followed by Nxg4
In the last one the bird variation they never move their bishop to a4.. They just take the knight on d4.
@erichg1000

yeah, this. Pretty much none of these traps work
Sir in last trap what if Re1 ??
@ChessVibesOfficial
3 жыл бұрын
Then you would take the rook with your queen with check - Qxe1+ and after white recaptures with Kxe1, then you take their queen with gxh5 and you are ahead a lot of pieces :-)
When I play as black I like to play the Russo gambit or however you spell that. Everytime my opponent plays the ruy Lopez I feel like "one.. just one square..." So I decided to learn how to punish those who miss by one square
In the fourth trap if re1 pinning the queen to the king then we just take the rook then the queen
Question pls: on the 4th trap - on the last move, what if he brings the rook to attack the queen ?

thought the same. put it in stockfish end it says white is completely winning with +16. we are right

you take the rook with check, making you able to take the queen right after.

4:18 White queen to a2 is just losing for black as they lose a rook.

What are you talking about? Are you a troll? Queen can't even go there as it is on the other side of the board and the white pawn is on that square.
At 200 ELO maybe they play these moves otherwise there's no chance. Interesting though, thanks
Just used fishing pole trap and won.
4th trap is not well thoughtout
