Bird Photography With Nikon Z6. Egret And Cormorant

We are in Germany to do wildlife and bird photography and photograph some water birds. Today we focus on bigger birds like Grey Heron, Great Egret, and Cormorants. But there are also Great Crested Grebe, Swan and Coots that want to pose for the lens. I show you how to position your lens as close to the water as possible. Go low or go home!
🐺 ABOUT THIS VIDEO
We are still in Germany and return to my local lake around ten minutes from home. The coots and great crested grebes got quite trusting to my appearance. Though the bigger birds are generally more sceptic and keep a safe distance, which is why I hung up a camouflage blanket for some days to let the animals get used to my spot. After some time I got the opportunity to photograph the grey heron, great egret and as well the cormorants. Sadly it is not always possible to get the animals super close due to traffic along the shores.I placed my lens really low above the water like many times explained by Trond Westby to get the best angle to photograph. If you photograph this low it is easier to get a shallow depth of field blurring out for and background of your image.

Maybe you like this one as well. I am back in Norway and waiting for my editing computer to get to me, then there will be new stuff soon. One more video coming on 17.04.22 in any case. It will be about Pine Marten, Shorebirds and Mink.

They are very beautiful indeed, especially the great cormorant has some insane details around his face. Sadly I missed all opportunities of getting that close due to the location being quite busy.

Hello Gunnar! I enjoyed watching this! I love the German name - Silver Heron. The neck is very odd - at first I wondered if it had swallowed something but I guess not. I look forward to seeing your mini-projects. 😊 - Donna

The neck is indeed very odd, and I think it was a previous injury. The bird seems to be well though, I’ve seen it many times hunting there. I hope to bring something else besides the mini projects soon, I have enough ideas, but just a busy schedule with all the Norway stuff. But I’m very glad you like all of this content :)

It is certainly not always easy, due to landscape or also for ourselves. I have a lot of back-pain after long session like that and come home and do some exercise that works well for me. I was very happy to have that sweet but very short unexpected King Fisher encounter after spending at least 6 days in my camo tent getting nothing at the other location. That is how it is, perfect place, but no luck. So I got my luck here at least, right? Thanks for your comment, Juanita :)

Great minds think alike Gunnar. I’ve just finished uploading a video on the same subject which goes out next Saturday. The silver Heron as you called it I think it’s what we refer to over here in the UK as a Great White Egret or a Great Egret. Great footage and images love the little Coot. Cheers Keith

In German it is rather easy, that one is grey? Grey Heron. That one is silver? Silver Heron :D I found out afterwards when I made a Reel about it. I knew that there are egrets, but I thought they were different in some sense. Now I know better. Thanks for tuning in, Keith :)
