My Life as a WILDLIFE PHOTOGRAPHER in SPRING

I Spent 3 Months Photographing Wildlife in spring in Norway. A few species we meet in WILDLIFE PHOTOGRAPHY: Behind The Scenes are CAPERCAILLIE, ATLANTIC PUFFINS, BLACK GROUSE and HORNED GREBES. The NIKON Z6 has been used for most recordings and photos.
🐺 ABOUT THIS VIDEO
Being a wildlife photographer, there are many adventures that gather up, but that sometimes can not be shown. In my new series Wildlife Photographer: Behind The Scenes I will shine a light on most encounters that I had in a specific season. We continue with the Spring of 2023. The winter held a tight grip on the country, but the snow started to disappear at the end of April. You can join me around Trondheim for Black Grouse, Capercaillie, beavers and horned grebes. At the end of Spring I went to Dovrefjell and saw Ruffs and Puffins (and many more) on Runde.

🐺 WHO I AM.
Hei! My name is Gunnar and I am a wildlife photographer from Germany, but I have been living in Norway for nearly 7 years. I am trying to spend most of my time out in nature, if it is the local forest, the mountains or along the coast. Many seem to think I am a professional, though this is not entirely the case. I do earn some money from what I do here, but I am not there yet.

Sweden is allowing hunters to kill at least 20% of their population, numbers are from 2017. It’s a massacre. On top, they’re allowed to use bait and dogs. I thought we would be beyond trophy hunting in 2023… this stuff happens every year in the nordics though. Pretty redneck if you ask me.

it seems that you are really pushing the 4.5 very far! you show me what is possible with this lens and of course some hard work. thank you very much for the inspiration. i did like the black grouse and the horned grebes the most. i mean puffins are allways great… But your captures from the black grouse are unique and really special.

Thanks for the kind feedback. I barely use my 200-500, nearly to the point that I kinda forgot in which direction to turn the zoom ring. I will get a 180-600, more later than sooner though. I often use a 1.4 converter for smaller animals or long distances, but actually some people recommend to just crop if you have a bigger sensor size. Apparently the quality stays better that way. I will try it if I hopefully get a Z8 in this century :D Cheers!

@GunnarDresler i'm not sure if the quality is better by croping without the 1.4 tc. Maybe that was the case with the dslr teleconverters, but in my opinion, the 1.4 on z-mount is the better solution if you need the extra focal length. But the sacrifice of the slower aperture is a bit tricky. But i didn't make any further tests to prove it. I really like my combo with z7 II / 400 4.5 / 1.4 tc... today, I was at the vermont natural trail in St. Vincent and had the chance to shoot the endemic st. Vincent parrot. I missed most of the shots cause of the lack of experience... i'm relatively new to bird photography, and I have to learn so much about focusing (and everything else).

Hi Gunnar, wow what a brilliant video, I've enjoyed it so much!!! It was as I was looking at a nature documentary on TV, really awesome! I'm glad you were in a tent when filling the capercaillie so he couldn't attack you 😂. My favourite part must be the horned grebes, they are so gorgeous. Do you also give workshops for them? I would suggest you go into a floating hide to photograph them. Furthermore, the puffins are equally No. 1 for me. I still have to photograph them. All in all fabulous professional video work as always. I think it's a great idea to have a video with different parts and species. Looking forward to your next one. Take care, greetings from The Netherlands, Gladys

Hei Gladys, Gladly "normal" Capercaillie that are not crazy are rather shy and would not attack you. I would really like to use a floating hide, but you always need to be able to transport it, plus the costs of getting one in your hands on top. Sadly I have other priorities that have to be checked up first before I could invest in something like that. Really glad you like it that much. All the best, Gunnar :)
