Biography: John J. Pershing

Фильм және анимация

This episode of “Biography” profiles General John J. “Black Jack” Pershing, the foremost American military figure of the first quarter of the 20th century. He served in the Spanish-American War and led the cavalry’s pursuit of Pancho Villa into Mexico during the Mexican Revolution, but his fame rests on his tenure leading the American Expeditionary Forces in France during WWI, whose actions stopped the German advance and resulted in the Allied victory. While some archival photos are used, the bulk of the story is told through newsreel footage, including sound footage of Pershing from his retirement years. Hosted and narrated by Mike Wallace. The first few minutes of the program are missing. There are two commercial breaks, both for Time-Life Books.

I love that this series is on KZread. I remember as a child watching these shows at 6am on channel 11 on the east coast. I learned a lot as a child watching these and reinforcing it as an adult. Mike Wallace is a great narrator. Thanks for allowing me to live my childhood again through this series. Great posting.

I don't think you'll ever see a another general get the amount of respect from his troops that Pershing did, especially in death.

General John "Blackjack" Pershing in the Philippines had an affair with Joaquina Ignacio, a very beautiful half spanish and half filipina. They lived openly in Pettit Baracks military camp/base as husband and wife and bore him children , One daughter Petronila died during the cholera epidemic,( i used to put flowers on her grave.) The love affair infuriated the congress and he was told to report back home to appear in congress and testify regarding rumors of his "Love affair". With his powerful father in law, Senator Warren , was backing him up , was then the majority floor leader. Before living the Philippines, he asked his best friend Zeller Shinn , his camp de aide, to marry Joaquina to minimize the damage of his extra marital affairs, he did save himself from a big scandal. Good strategy? Just like his war plans, sacrifice this and win that.. Maybe he promised Joaquina that he is coming back for her. Every day, until she died she was seen by many people, neighbors and passerbys sitting by the doorstep of her little house every day as if she was" waiting for somebody to come back ", until she passed away. Zeller Shinn very soon after came to the United States for a vacation and back then it takes 3 months by ship. He had an appendicitis which burst before reaching homeland , but it was too late to save him and was burried at the Presidoio in San Francisco and i feel so sad for her and i always wonder how she felt. Did she feel she was just used, abondoned or betrayed. He never communicated with her, i shed tears each time i think of it, She then became Joquina Ignacio Shinn, John Shinn was a first generaition irish american from Russellville, Arkansas. He too never came back. I wish i could help. Joaquina Ignacio Shinn was my paternal great grandmother.

They weren't perfect, neither are we with our damn spies, spysats, supercomputers, drones, stealth jets, autogun loaded armoured vehicles, and don't forget that wonder device we take for granted - radar.

The 10th Cav, segregated Black troops where Pershing gained the nickname "Black Jack" by leading them, never get any credit despite spilling blood for your country when you are Black continues, only thugs are referenced, never patriots, from the revolution to today, it's always backbiting and insults to soldierly honor. Pershing gave his Black infantry trained troops to the French (where they were later covered in glory) while he insisted American troops be only fight as a unit, which tells you something about his attitude toward the very troops that made him his name(!)...The only film that ever got it close to correct was the "Rough Riders"...letterboxd.com/film/rough-riders/
