Main memory for me of this show was the theme tune - it was years before I realised it was Somebody Stole My Gal. I think it was because the band played it in a kind of off-beat fashion. I was listening out for Russ playing - perhaps he's in part two...

Thanks Jo - yes - same here... Russ appears playing solo in Part 2. He does get a look in by other ways though....

yes evidently...but I didn't think he was doing too badly - apart from making that silly "soprano" voice...I wish they had sung it straight for a few more bars as it's a nice old song..

wordsmith52 ...agreed, I suppose it boils down to the choice between loyalty to the song or a mis-timed chuckle, but it was a different world back then by today's standards...

Does anybody know the fadeout tune that followed 'Somebody Stole My Gal" - it started with a gentle drum rhythm, and gradually faded out.

This isn't one of the actual radio shows. It's just a selection of their most popular songs. I used to like the comedy bits more than the music. The regular spaceman gag ("Hey you ... you down there in the glasses!") Or that foreign lady who used to wind up Billy every week until in exasperation he'd yell "JOHNSON!!" and have her chucked out of the studio.

Yes that's right - its from the LP record they issued in 1961 as stated above. I do remember the spaceman routine every week - a pity they didn't include it on the record.

@@wordsmith52 I don't think the incorrect 'pips' were on the 1961 LP, though.

I always hated this when it came on the radio. It was just so artificial and false. Even when I was 7 years old. Thank goodness for the Beatles, Stones. Even the Shadows and (almost) Cliff. Even Rolf Harris was way better (Sun Arise), not to mention whoever did Telstar. It was awful, in the sense of bad. And the whole country listened to it. Well, "adults".

If the whole country listened to it and you thought it was bad, perhaps a review of your (7yr old) taste is indicated? Oh, and Testar was recorded by the Tornados, Billy Fury's backing group.
