Vintage jazz, swing, theatre organ, piano, accordion, plus humorous and other unusual or interesting music, including comedy and humour on radio, film and televison.
I wish it had actually been a video of him playing this. I always love watching him play and his extravagant outfits he always used to wear. 🙂

Great number from this outfit - a breath of fresh air at a time when we were all waiting for the mersey invasion. Particularly like the dead-pan approach and the wonderful double DJ's nightmare.

Poor Sandy McPherson, when the BBC launched the Home Service in September 1939, they literally had no new programming ready, as they were expecting London to be bombed. Sandy was nearly chained to his theatre organ, and played so much, to fill the vacant hours of regular programming. Thankfully by early October 1939 normal programming resumed.

Another interesting version for piano and orchestra. I prefer Mantovani's version with what sounds like 2 pianos. I love the glittering arpeggi especially of the piano playing - ascending AND descending.

Love this piece so much, and Liberace was a great pianist. The man was a gentle soul, somewhat misunderstood, criticised by the classical community, but a brilliant entertainer & showman who just wanted to share his love with his audience.

Extraordinary not just as history but for Frank at his early best. Contrast the confidence here - the sweet swagger - with the earlier "experimental" Bluebird recording that was among Frank’s first solo platters. There’s also a colorized film on KZread that someone shot in ‘43 at a Bronx high school. My dad happened to be there before shipping off for the Navy. This was Jerome Kern’s favorite song and Sinatra kept singing it - sometimes swinging it - throughout his career but this is my favorite take. Thanks so much for posting.

Thanks for your comments and info. Yes, it's a great number and FS did a marvelous job of it. The emotion of the occasion may have influenced his performnce too. I had it played at a funeral service for a family member some time ago and it went down well.

It was very much mums' and dads' music even back then - they were popular (mainly in the UK only) due to their luvvie dovie and softly softly approach. Lonny Donnigan helped to promote them [he is seen at the begining of the film playing a guitar].
