Billie Eilish's new song, "What Was I Made For," was written for the newly released Barbie movie. I took a poll on both my Instagram and KZread Community page, asking if I should cover this song. 97% said yes, so here I am.

"What Was I Made For" by Billie Eilish was an obvious cover song choice for me. Not only is the song amazingly beautiful and sad (right up my alley), but I am also a huge fan of Billie Eilish! I've covered several of her songs in the past ("Wish You Were Gay" and "No Time To Die"), and have seen her in concert 2x! Since its release, I've listened to "What Was I Made For" nonstop. Then, when a majority of you voted that I cover the song, I officially got to work. Originally, I was going to keep the song the same key. However, I felt that the key it was in didn't work as well for my vocal range, so I transposed the key down a step and a half. This gave me more room to explore the vocal line and aided a more emotional performance. I hope you recognize this difference and enjoy my cover of Billie Eilish's "What Was I Made for"!

Wow, your cover is gorgeous and does the song justice. It's a beautifully-written song but Billie's original version is too thin-voiced for my tastes... and all the (female) covers I've found up to this point have been too sweet or too breathy or just not hitting it. Thank you for putting your heart into this and opening up your voice in the middle rise of the song. You convey its depth and melancholy while still keeping a softness.

when i first started trying out this song i felt the same way!! i wanted room for vocal variety. i changed the key to make that possible, as the original key would have been too high for me to belt effectively🤍

It was a conscious decision by Billie to sing the song that way. She explains it at 2:25 kzread.info/dash/bejne/n5mrxsWBedmznaQ.htmlsi=M4-XXiGzdUgMz7Af Basically, she wanted it to sound like she’s quietly crying while thinking about her life, rather than a theatrical performance. She thought it was better suited to the meaning of the song. That’s why I personally prefer the original interpretation. To me, it conveys more of what the song is trying to say. This is an absolutely beautiful cover regardless.

@@viki_nagy such a good point when you consider what this song was written for. she is so talented. most of the songs i cover are covered because i deeply admire the original song and/or artist. however, when i strip down the song to just piano and vocals, i almost always need room for vocal variation because my voice is half of the final product. there are so many artistic choices that go behind a fully produced song that make them what they are, and i respect those so much!🫶🏻
