My mum repressed hers quite heavily around my father - she was scared of him as we all were. She suppressed them in public too, but she could never suppress them completely. Without suppressing them, she would be quite loud with her voice, and bashing bench tops, the wall, and me as I walked by lol. It used to drive me nuts it really did. And I felt terrible for that too. I wish they had known more about it back then. My mum could laugh at herself. She was quite ocd as well - everything had to be in threes. Even if she dropped something and it smashed, she would have to pick it up twice more to drop it again. I really loved my mum. I wish she hadn’t smoked and she would still be alive. Smoking helped her tics.

This part of the interview just brings such pride for billie. She had mentioned in earlier years how she didn't want her tourettes to be her defining characteristic as an artist, hence not advocating for awareness early on and such. I'm so happy to see her comfortably talking about it now, with fame and confidence under her belt and this just adding on to the already extraordinary person we know she is. It affirms that she is more than good enough just as herself and doesn't need the 'diversity in disability' card to be seen, which I think she was afraid of, but can express that part of her life now with assurance. Allowing it in the conversation- I'm just so proud of her.

I'm glad she finally addressed this. My daughter has tourettes. It isn't fun or funny. Pople do laugh or get uncomfortable a lot. The hardest tic she has (trust me she has some violent ones and really terrible ones), is the one where she either scoffs or laughs after someone talks. It is VERY hard to explain to others that she did not mean to do that and is not bored, or thinks what they said is unimportant or humorous.

She's right. Many of us don't know that we have friends, peers, or possibly family members that have Tourette, but sometimes it may get to the point where someone can feel like they've been laughed at or accepted for long enough. Either way, they're going to feel as though they're free to talk about it, and I can see Billie is not insecure about it at all, and that's what may or may not catch someone off-guard who does or doesn't have Tourette Syndrome. Also, you have to give props to the interviewer for asking permission before going over Billie's Tourette despite him thinking she was fed up with him.

She said that she suppress her tics until the interviewer asks a question because then the camera won't be on her as she tics. People first started noticing her tics (and she quickly confirmed that she had Tourette's) in 2018 when she was 16 and an unedited interview was posted. Almost all videos are edited to cut out questions or pauses, so this was less common with a 10 minute interview that had her on screen the entire time. Fans noticed that she'd turn her neck to the side, roll her eyes in odd ways, or raise her eyebrow repeatedly.

But regardless, because I was exposed to the idea of ticking from a young age I accommodated pretty quickly and it was just normal to me. This is why talking about it so freely/exposure is important because people need to learn about it, you won't think twice about it if youre used to it and understand why it happens. This goes for all disabilities/disorders/syndromes, i really commend Billie talking about it so openly bc it can help others to understand. But ultimately its not just the person affected who the responsibility lies with, so we have to make an effort to educate ourselves and listen to them more.

Thannnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnk you Billie! Thank you for not being ashamed to discuss that you have Tourette's! My son has it.. and I don't think he's ever had a famous person that he could look at ... and say to himself.. oh wow.. I'm not the only one!!! We have to stop hiding these conditions... and normalize them. Make it .. NOT a taboo subject! My son will talk about it .. but only if he knows he can trust the person he is with.. and that they will not judge him or be weird about it. I think for some who have this condition.. they feel shame at times and would rather hide it if they can. Understandable.. as most people have never experienced it.. and don't understand or know much about it. It's time that changed.. as Billie said there are so many people that have it.. but you just don't know. Anyways.. thank you Billie and Dave.. this made my day!! Love from a Canadian fan .. of both of you!!! :)
