    I was actually there for that performance, up close in the front pit. We couldn't hear her very well since the speakers pointed towards the main audience but the arrangement was so beautiful live. That big note hit me so hard. After the performance, we could see her get emotional, it was really sweet.

    @@kayelle8005 Yes but in art it could be seen as the equivalent of a poor artist that can ONLY do one thing, one view of a head, the one pose, the same few colours, can only create abstract art etc. In such a case it is not a choice. There's no choice if it's the only thing you can do. That's a limitation. Any good artist will tell you that you should learn the fundamentals first and THEN you can pick and choose what styles or things you prefer to draw, paint etc. Far too many artists never learn to properly paint or draw, have no real understanding of anatomy, perspective, colour theory, light and shadow etc. and they go straight into abstract art or similar and make out it's a choice or their anatomy is way off and they call it a style. It's only a style if you deliberately make those choices, knowing how to do it correctly first.

  • @kayelle8005

    @kayelle8005

    @@Jhakaro Yes. Great points. I agree with you. I don't know if Billie is making a choice or not. Just because we've predominantly seen one aspect so far does not mean she isn't making a deliberate choice and does actually know the fundamentals, but it could well be that this is her starting point and her knowledge or skill level is not allowing a variation. Time will tell. I see a similar thing with the athletes that I've coached. Some are naturally talented and can get a fair degree of success, even elite success, without knowing or applying really good foundational generic movement and sport specific technique. That said, they all improve their performance once they do take the time and effort to understand and learn technique.

    I completley agree and its something ive been trying to explain when billie comes up in conversations. Its not that what she normally does doesnt take talent. Clearly a whole lot goes into how she sings and its totally unfair to call it whispering or anything that isnt singing. its that shes consciously limiting her voice and i wish she would explore that potential that she clearly has.

He's good at explaining things, of course, it's just not my area. I don't think she will go for that path, but she could expand her vocal range, add much more tecniches, learn music theory. I hope she chose to keep studying, because she is really good, but could become just an absolute vocal monster.

    TY - really thought your analysis was educational. So much so, I actually didn't know some of the terms you used, what they mean...but that is my lack of knowledge/experience, not a criticism of what you said. Now I have musical (singing) terms I need to familiarize myself with going forward. I am not a singer and have - duh! - a lot to learn about the mechanics of singing. So your review/analysis was a very worthwhile introduction. Enjoyed your video very much. TY again.

    I have been waiting for your reaction. I love it. This is not her best song but she & Finneas have kind of merged the "Billie genre" with the "Bond genre" quite well. Singing with Hans Zimmer and an orchestra must have been quite an experience for her as well. I wish you had mentioned that the slide you talked about went straight into the chorus without a break. Also, the decoration after the belt note was pretty great.

  • @crosita1

    I was trying not to be one of those commenters but I must admit I am glad you chose this performance. Both performance and analysis made me very happy. The info on slides was extra great. Would love to see you take a look at Alison Krauss with her super light but never breathy high voice, and old timey fast vibrato and beautiful sound.

    I love how, in every video, Sam is so careful not to bash Billie's singing. I personally don't love the way she sings (but I do think her songs are great) and Sam just sticks to that respectful place of saying "I know you can do more and this is what you could do..." but also "it's ok if you wanna stay there, it's your music". Constructive criticism is so rare on the Internet these days.

    Listen to Sam’s comments on American Idol judges laughing at singers who are not the best and obviously were brought up to audition for the judges just for the amusement. He clearly empathizes with these people who don’t know how to sing yet somehow got encouraged to audition and criticizes the judges for laughing. That is when I grew to admire Sam.
