Billboard BREAKDOWN - Hot 100 - February 24, 2024 (Texas Hold'Em, 16 Carriages... and VULTURES 1)

Музыка

In our newest episode of Billboard BREAKDOWN for the Hot 100 week of February 24, 2024, where amidst a boost for Noah Kahan, a return for GloRilla, and Beyonce going country, I take a... well, unorthodox approach to addressing the album bomb from Kanye West and Ty Dolla $ign with 'VULTURES 1'.
Track Reviews:
Latto - Sunday Service

Kanye West & Ty Dolla $ign - Good (Don't Die)

Kanye West & Ty Dolla $ign - Hoodrat
Kanye West & Ty Dolla $ign - Beg Forgiveness
Kanye West & Ty Dolla $ign - Paperwork
Kanye West & Ty Dolla $ign - Keys to My Life
Kanye West & Ty Dolla $ign - Paid
Kanye West & Ty Dolla $ign - Do It
Kanye West & Ty Dolla $ign - Stars
Beyonce - 16 Carriages
Kanye West & Ty Dolla $ign - Vultures ft. Lil Durk & Bump J
Kanye West & Ty Dolla $ign - Burn
Kanye West & Ty Dolla $ign - Talking ft. North West
Noah Kahan - Forever
Kanye West & Ty Dolla $ign - Back To Me
Kanye West & Ty Dolla $ign - Fuk Sumn
Kanye West & Ty Dolla $ign - Carnival

I know the past year has been massive for country music in the charts but I honestly didn’t expect Beyoncé to try it again in 2024. Not complaining though because ‘Texas Hold ‘Em’ is awesome! I love how versatile she’s always been with her sound. It’s now predicted to become her ninth #1 single on the Hot 100 next week and her 13th if you count her work with Destiny’s Child! 😊

That's the thing with "bad guys" in the music industry and beyond. They see being controversial as "no press is bad press" and, as proven time and time again, people will pay closer attention if they do. Now, for most, they'll go too far and lose everything, but I feel the reason why Kanye, as well as CBrown and others like them, are able to get away with it is because of Todd's popstar theory: Artists who'll always have a dedicated fanbase vs. Artists who have fans as long as they have hits.

Kanye has not made anything worth my attention in years and this new album wouldn't be worth my time either even if he wasn't openly promoting fascism. Honestly, I really don't give a shit on what Kanye's been up to lately, so skipping out on reviewing his work was pretty nice. In fact, so far this year, I think this is the first time (since before following the charts in mid-2016) I felt so disconnected from modern pop music. I mean, almost NOTHING has caught my interest. Maybe because I spent the last few months listening to k-pop, but I'm not sure if that's the case because in early 2020, I went through a 2000's pop punk phase, and I also liked a lot of those (at the time) modern songs just fine! Right now, my favorite song in the top ten is Tate McRae's 'greedy', and I just feel out of touch.

We can unanimously agree that the conservation about the biggest topics being pointed out for 'Vultures 1' and Kanye West, in general, was handled brilliantly. Still, I am frustrated with this brief impact that it left some interesting songs in the bubbling under for this week, so let's get into it. 1. Fuck Niggaz by Youngboy Never Broke Again (New) 2. Deeper Well by Kacey Musgraves (New) (Out of all the new singles that I'm upset got screwed by the Vultures 1 impact it would be this track, as I think it's a very good single for the upcoming album. I just hope it can potentially chart when the album drops.) 3. Paul Revere by Noah Kahan & Gregory Alan Isakov (Re-Entry) 4. Let's Go by Key Glock (-1) 5. Kissing Strangers by Usher (New) (It's a shame these two tracks got stuck here as they are among the best of the album.) 6. Ruin by Usher & Pheelz (+17) 7. Poison by Blake Roman, Sam Haft & Andrew Underberg (-5) 8. La Falda by Myke Towers (+10) 9. Make You Mine by Madison Beer (New) 10. Tu Name by Fuerza Regida (New) (The two Fuerza Regida tracks here are from an EP that they put out in the past tracking week and all of it impacted the Latin charts.) 11. All My Love by Noah Kahan (New) 12. Bulletproof by Nate Smith (New) (A new single pushed on country radio, presumably for a new album.) 13. Loser Baby by Andrew Underberg, Sam Haft, Keith David & Blake Roman (-12) 14. Luna by Feid & ATL Jacob (-4) 15. Call Your Mom by Noah Kahan With Lizzy McAlpine (Re-Entry) 16. Diluvio by Rauw Alejandro (-10) 17. Brillarosa by Fuerza Regida (New) 18. Poco A Poco by Xavi X Dareyes de La Sierra (-2) 19. Tucson Too Late by Jordan Davis (-4) 20. Whatever by Kygo With Ava Max (Re-Entry) 21. Back Then Right Now by Tyler Hubbard (Re-Entry) 22. We Ride by Bryan Martin (-9) 23. Nightcrawler by Travis Scott ft. Swae Lee & Chief Keef (New) (An album cut from 'Rodeo' getting some new resurgence in streaming, why not?) 24. Not My Fault by Renee Rapp & Megan Thee Stallion (-20) 25. Risk It All by Usher & H.E.R. (New) (Not surprised it took the album impact to get here.)

The internet's interconnectedness makes it hard to just enjoy art for the art. You have to talk about it, review it, and discuss it. I haven't heard vulture but it is what it is. I hate Kanye as a person, but listened to Vultures (it was mediocre). I always listen because I love art, and I don't like to ignore any of it. The way I see it, experiencing the art doesn't mean you approve of the person who made it - the art is a thing that speaks independently of its creator, and all art deserves a chance. Of course, that's complicated by the fact that every youtube play of a song gets counted towards its chart position, but tbh I think that's more of an indictment of a society that treats popular artists = good people than the listeners. But I understand why Mark wouldn't want to discuss Vultures on his channel. If he reviewed it positively, a lot of people would take that as an implicit approval of Kanye's actions, and I get why he wouldn't want to be in that position. If he reviewed it negatively, he'd have to take on the responsibility of dealing with all the discourse around Kanye and potentially even explain why antisemitism is bad. Plus I'm not going to judge Mark for avoiding something he hates. I'm a fan, I don't want him to be miserable. Mark, feel free to ignore the next Drake album, too.

as a former Kanye stan, I unfortunately saw his downfall coming since 2018 at the very least. his antics during the TLOP era were concerning, but the album was still good and I was too young to think about the consequences. Ye is where the chaos stopped being fun and just became frustrating - especially since the music itself started feeling like unfinished drafts (Ghost Town is the last great Kanye song imo). Jesus is King where it finally hit me that Kanye was past the point of no return. I remember talking with other Kanye fans back in 2019 and telling them that if he keeps ignoring his mental health and surrounding himself with yesmen, he will go down a very dark direction. they all denied it, and this is not me trying to gloat about it, I’m just sad that my predictions came true. at this point, even if I were to completely ignore all the context behind 2024 Kanye (which I am not), I’d still be done with him, only because the music itself has become so mediocre - him trying to win over his fanbase by reminding them of the time he still made good music (the Hell of a Life sample comes to mind). it’s the Disney remake approach, and I find it just as hacky in Kanye’s case. I am sad that one of my favourite artists of all time is destroying his legacy not only through unashamed bigotry, but by also feeding the brainwashed hypebeast people slop that doesn’t hold a candle to the classics. but the world doesn’t stop with Kanye, so if he isn’t willing to change, I also don’t have to stay by his side and scramble to defend his actions. I might be done with him as an artist, but I still hope he will find actual inner peace someday. it was a long comment, I know, but thanks for reading.

I think this is the first time you’ve outright refused to talk about a song (or multiple songs) on Billboard Breakdown that did chart on the Hot 100. Personally, I’ve never been a fan of Kanye West. Even if he hadn’t said and done all the horrible things he’s said and done, I still wouldn’t care for “Vultures” or ever be interested to listen to it. That being said, I am a firm believer of “separate art from the artist”, and if some Kanye fan is genuinely able to enjoy his music even despite knowing and acknowledging all the horrible things he’s said and done, more power to them. I don’t believe “separate art from the artist” should be an excuse for Kanye’s behavior, but bringing it up when someone wants to listen to music by someone who’s done something bad or wrong (be it Chris Brown or Morgan Wallen or any song written by Dr. Luke) because they genuinely enjoy the song is perfectly valid IMO. I went more into detail on my thoughts on this topic in my response video to that video essay you mentioned on your main channel.

@@justezek8596 I have watched the review. It's interesting to be sure What does bother me is that, while what Kanye said is 100% awful and condemnable, no discussion, it does feel like some people have a bit of a double standard when it comes to antisemitism coming from certain types of political communities. Because Kanye is openly associating himself with fascist/Nazi images, he is facing much more obvious scrutiny, as opposed to Jay Electronica, who is a member of the Nation of Islam, a group that while controversial, is still admired and respected in some circles, despite the fact that Farrakhan is about as antisemitic as Kanye is, maybe even more so. But because it's coated in black nationalist language, I think a lot of creators (especially white leftist creators) are antsy about calling it out in fear of appearing "anti-black" or being accused by certain "Cornbreadtube" types of promoting "hotep fearmongering", the kind that people like Destiny or Vaush have been accused of. Hell, when Kanye first came out with the "I love Hitler" stuff, I saw some people were kind of hesitant to criticize him for that very reason, with one leftist black creator I saw (Lil Bill) attacking the white for supposedly promoting "anti blackness" by attacking Kanye more than necessary. Which does go to show a concerning mindset, especially considering the fact that Kanye is literally a Nazi.

  • @justezek8596

@@maninthewall7050 Here's the thing, I agree, but it's a complicated conversation. Now Mark, while he'll take no qualms in discussing black art and not giving much people quarter when they need to, can be limited in that perspective particularly in the black experience, but he knows it. A white man from Toronto who enjoys hip-hop, all I need to say. But, in terms of NOI and Jay Elec. Look I don't like it either, but F.D. Signifier actually talked about this in an excellent video regarding the real Black faces of conservatism. There are roots to NOI that spread through the black community specifically rap and let's not also forget the antisemitic rhetoric passed around since the 90s. Hell Jay Z, Kanye's idol, doesn't skirt this either with the 'The Story of O.J.' and his brand of conservative capitalism. Now again, this is more of a systematic issue than I can address right now, but the roots of what Kanye said is not surprising. No, he took it much further. Jay Elec was associated with NOI, much like the deceased and great Malcom X, but he was, to put it bluntly more private and while he has a cult fanbase, he also wasn't putting out much material. So I think people let bygones be bygones or how much history from the 2000s is getting pigeonholed or something, especially when Jay Z was co-signing it in 2020. After all, this would involve impugning the legacies of both Jays here and we can't have that, right? But even with that, both Jay Elec and Ye are both protected by rap media, Stans, and the culture and connections at large that despite me disagreeing with their antisemitism (I mean we all rep the same God here; there are black Jews), I'm not surprised the culture at large is hesitant to start a real backlash One thing you have to realize that even creators, specifically left black creators have blind spots and while they aren't wrong in the white criticism, they tend to skirt past real issues.

And it's a shame we didn't get an album bomb for Usher's new album. The Super Bowl was also partially promo for it. I guess not all legacy acts are treated equally.

Haven’t heard Vultures in its entirety either (and never will) just bits of it from Fantano’s stream but having read the lyrics, my guesses for your WOTW would’ve been a tie between Carnival & Problematic, for the former the production is absolutely rancid, Playboi Carti sounds awful, Rich the Kid is bland as usual and Kanye compares himself to R. Kelly, Bill Cosby and Diddy all in one bar, and for the latter track Problematic for similar reasons production wise and has probably the grossest and most dehumanizing lyric Kanye has ever said about any woman and it’s toward his wife by saying "she looking like a reference." Dishonorable mentions however, it’s basically a pick your poison situation.

Hoodrat is one of if not the worst Kanye song I’ve ever heard (and Kanye’s my favorite artist of all time). Truly the trashiest of the trash and just gross, misogynistic lyrics that are just disgusting coming from a middle aged father with a daughter.

Nice video and discussion about 'VULTURES 1'. I unfortunately listened to it because of its charting impact, it's about as bad as I expected/heard. Best: 'You're Gonna Go Far' - Noah Kahan: Honestly, this and the rest of the honorable mentions were decent songs that I didn't know how to place. I think I liked this one the most because I believe the song is more sincere and shows Noah's issues more with the idea that she really isn't coming back. Not great, or the best I've heard from him, but pleasant enough. HM (Tie): 'Yeah Glo!' - GloRilla: Never been a GloRilla fan by any means, but this is definitely a modest improvement in terms of sound and flow. HM (Tie): 'Forever' - Noah Kahan: Another pleasant enough song, but I think this week made be truly realize that Noah is much better as a collaborate than a solo artist. HM (Tie): 'TEXAS HOLD 'EM' - Beyoncé: It's slowly growing on me, but I'm not wowed by the sound of this or '16 CARRIAGES'. Still pretty fun though. Worst (Tie): 'CARNIVAL', 'BACK TO ME', 'PROBLEMATIC', 'KING', 'HOODRAT', & 'VULTURES' - ¥$ ft. People who didn't care enough and people who should care less:... DM (Tie): 'STARS' & 'PAID' - ¥$ ft. People who didn't care enough and people who should care less:... Honestly, I don't know which of these is worse than another, and I don't really care to listen to any of them again to find out. There were some ok ideas from people other than Kanye on the album, but the album is brought down to point where that barely even matters. If you're curious, I'd give it like a 1/10 even with the decent enough songs. It's time to move on. Spoilers, if 'CARNIVAL' sticks around, it will top my worst list for the year. Another rough week. I hope things get better for the year :/

I get your decision to not cover Vultures. I myself have gotten more and more tired of Kanye/Ye’s nonsense. If he retired from making music and never made another track or album again, I wouldn’t care. He’s been tarnishing his legacy for way too long and it’s getting quite frankly exhausting and unbearable. If the music was the only part that sucked, that’d be one thing. But, when you realize he’s pushing toxic beliefs from a group who put many races and groups, including Black individuals, six feet under, it’s absolutely disgusting and not worth defending him over.
