It’s not just the US coming together. As a Canadian (and so fortunate to be in the path of the totality!) I would like to think this is a shared human experience. Watched Bill as a kid growing up in the 90's. I also stared directly at the sun as a kid as well and it left a colored glow after looking away. Maybe this is why i wear glasses...

Those cheap paper glasses he's wearing don't seem to be good for solar eclipses. I tested mine out on the sun and my eyes would still hurt meaning it wasn't blocking the harmful rays of the sun. It did sorta work though a little more when I covered not just my eye balls put pressed around the corners of my eyes to shut any of the light from passing through only then did the pain stop by at least 80%, and the shaders on the glasses did allow me to look at the sun. Essentially you're trying to cover your eyes O.O using glasses that only cover about o.o this much and the overall quality of the glasses themselves aren't 100% so expect some eye damage.
