Bill Moyers: U.S. Democracy "May Be Running Out of Luck" | Amanpour and Company

Clashing ideologies about the meaning of democracy in America are no less harrowing than the events of January 6. Journalist Bill Moyers, a 30-time Emmy Award winner, shares his views and concerns in the new PBS documentary "Preserving Democracy," airing tomorrow. Moyers speaks with Hari Sreenivasan alongside historian Kathleen Belew - who also appears in the film - about the insurrection and the danger of a recurrence.
Originally aired on January 5, 2022.

Bill Moyers, Jimmy Carter, and other white southerners of their stellar historical reputation, have been speaking true about the sickening sight of that Confedrate flag in the Capitol on 6 Jan 2021. I’m a well-educated white southerner, and the sight of that flag inside the Capitol infuriated me as much as it sickened me. I thank God for this program, for Amanpour herself, and I hope Bill Moyers will live forever as a cultural icon.

Notice, this is a smoke screen by the government to prevent a actual Coup. Both political parties are corrupt. Congress members are worried that a revolution could happen do to polarization. But they also feed the polarization every chance they get, when cameras are on them. Both sides. Every year they promise to break up the tech monopolies, yet nothing ever happens, instead tech monopoly stocks rise, & A.I driven social polarization continues, to increase Ad revenue. Congress "Debates" have become the outrage content for tech monopolies to recommend & herd more American people into fringe political insanity, to increase Ad revenue... Congress & Big Tech has clearly become the number 1 enemy of the American people. Congress is a corrupt organization, & is parasitic to our system, a clear national security threat that must be dealt with.

Excellent discussion. I agree, Mr.Moyer, that we need a mass mobilization that insists on full accountability for all involved in Jan 6. However, I am dismayed that at this point ( a year later ) we are just learning the details about the deep involvement of elected officials. I trying to be hopeful that our system of justice will prevail and I certainly hope elected officials will be held to a higher standard and if convicted, carry maximum sentences for their involvement ( I just heard the AG's statements today). I guess I'm feeling somewhat vindictive but this has been so traumatic. Also, America urgently needs to restore American Civics in all school curriculums.

It's interesting that with all the talk about democracy in this video, there is a complete absence of any discussion about how the super concentration of wealth and political power has greatly accelerated under capitalism during the past half century in the USA. Without addressing the political economy, capitalism, which has given enormous and unequal political and economic power to a tiny number of elites in this country, this type of instability can only get worse. A society must be created where regular people and planet come first.

There are thousands of interpretations of Christianity both today and historically. That is one of the best aspects of Christianity, it is how we gained Freedom of and freedom from religion. It was expressed by John Locke who worked with the Huguenots, and then adopted by Thomas Jefferson. Out of the tragedy of the Huguenots arose many of our most basic civil liberties. But today because Jefferson own slaves, his statue is torn down, the iconoclasts seem not to understand that he was historically one of the greatest defender of freedom from and freedom to practice religion and tolerance as well as a secular liberal legal tradition. I grew up in the United Church of Christ which is one of the more progressive denominations. Bill Moyers is a member. The Church was a leader in the interfaith movement which I always thought was a very positive movement. Perhaps the shadow side of that tolerance was that of not confronting other churches as some became more and more profane. And they called the UCC profane and heretical for being tolerant and accepting. What I have found is that many of the more radical church‘s don’t read the Bible or understand church history at all, or the many interpretations. Yes, there are dark chapters of Christian history. But some of the deeper lessons come out of erased triumphs such as Rev. Robert Rauschenbush who ended child labor, Rev. Paul Tillich and other Germans who stood up against the Nazi, Martin Luther King Jr. Civil Rights movement, not to mention things like the abolitionists. In 1900 most mainline churches were progressive and accepted science. Literalist fundamentalism was a reactionary movement of the 1920‘s expressed then most notably in the Scopes Monkey Trial. They darker chapters should be taught for the sake of greater discernment. But there is also an appreciation which is also sorely lacking by the general population as well.

It's way more difficult to create such a schism in European politics (because we have more parties, so the blame can't be directed against one party and aiming it against every party makes you sound a bit ridiculous), we work with coalition governments (so no Trump can do what he wants to, he's held in check by his coalition party(ies)) and we don't have such a useless politicization of of everything (a.o. our juridical system, our school-boards, our Covid vaccinations, ...). The divisions in our societies are never so outspoken as in the Anglo-Saxon world.

When you speak of evolving past the majority vote, are you referring to the Parliamentary system? Duverger pointed out three-quarters of a century ago that a first-past-the-post system, which the U.S. has, will overwhelmingly tend to create a two-party system. (India may be an exception, as there is a plethora of parties, but it is parliamentary.) Nietzsche pointed out that even a five-party system had the problem of Procrusteanism, that then therefore five opinions will be socially acceptable, but anything that deviates from those five will be unacceptable. Even given that, two parties are especially problematic, especially because game theory shows that they will tend to be as close as possible to get votes. Still, I'd like to know if there is anything I missed. How exactly do you think your system has evolved past the majority vote?

  • @dirkgonthier101

@@deadman746 Well, I don't see things as complicated as you. But the Anglo-Saxon model of majority vote (which means that if a party wins in a certain area (constituency or state) that that party automatically gets all the electoral votes of that area: you can loose with 49% vs 51% then those 49% are votes which don't make a difference in determining the electoral votes of that area) was the first way of democracy. So, the whole world copied it. But, as time went by, the proportional system was invented (where those 49% gave you the right of having 49% of the electoral votes of that area and the 51% gave you the right to 51% of the electoral votes) and the continent Europe changed their constitutions to allow this new idea to take place. So, Europe was once ruled by the same majority vote as the Anglo-Saxon world, but as soon as there was invented the proportional system, we changed to the proportional system. And, given the difficulties USA-democracy (and English democracy) experiences with a fascist leader like Trump, the benefits of the proportional system (with multiple parties and coalition governments) are becomming more and more clear. I hope you can understand my explanation a bit, 'cause talking about subjects as these is a lot harder than having a normal conversation in English...

My parents' generation fought Hitler and the Nazis in Europe and the Pacific. (I'm old like Moyers) I fear my kids's generation will have to fight them here. Side notes: that professor uses long sentences and large words to say little. The Constitution prohibits the states from maintaining armies, yet many are; enforcement is needed.

The problem is that government hasn’t worked for the common people for many years! I think democracy is worth saving, but you can see why many people don’t. They see government favoring the rich and powerful. Corporate welfare abounds while the common folk are told their inability to get rich is because they’re lazy.

TRUMP CANNOT WIN - IF AMERICANS WHO BELIEVE IN DEMOCRACY - GO AND VOTE ! REMEMBER TRUMP AND HIS * FASCIST FRIENDS ARE IN THE MINORITY ! BUT IT IS CRUCIAL TO THE SURVIVAL OF AMERICAN DEMOCRACY THAT DEMOCRATS WIN IN THE 2022 MIDTERMS AND IN THE 2024 PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION. PLEASE VOTE DEMOCRAT UP AND DOWN THE BALLOT - DO NOT ALLOW ANY REPUBLICANS TO WIN ANY SEATS BECAUSE THEY HAVE PROVEN THEMSELVES TO SHOW THEIR ALLEGIANCE TO TRUMP AND NOT TO THE DEMOCRATIC UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. THE OTHER THING WHICH IS HUGELY IMPORTANT IS TO JOIN LOCAL GOVERNMENT BOARDS - SUCH AS SCHOOL BOARDS etc AS THIS IS WHAT REPUBLICANS ARE DOING TO GAIN CONTROL OF KEY LOCAL GOVERNMENT DEPARTMENTS. TRUMP AND HIS * FASCIST CULT SUPPORTERS ARE IN THE MINORITY - WHICH IS WHY THEY LOST THE 2020 ELECTION. EVERY PERSON ELIGIBLE TO VOTE MUST VOTE DEMOCRAT FOR EVERY SEAT / EVERY OFFICE WHICH IS UP FOR ELECTION - "THE LINCOLN PROJECT" AND OTHERS ARE WORKING TO BOTH WARN AND TO MOTIVATE VOTERS AT THIS TIME AND TO MAKE CLEAR THAT THE OUTCOME OF EVERY ELECTION BOTH LOCAL AND NATIONAL CAN HELP PRESERVE OR HELP DESTROY AMERICAN DEMOCRACY - THE VOTERS DECIDE ! ( DEFINITION OF * FASCISM = THE CULT OF THE LEADER )

I really miss Bill Moyers. He was always open with thought from various views. I've seen him interview people whose views he opposed, but he was always diplomatic and courteous when questioning and discussing their views. We need more men and women of his character that desire to see our country be its best. The public needs to listen to him and the professor.

Bill Moyer said that United states citizens need to mobilize to defend the constitution. The correct statement is that United States citizens need to mobilize to change your constitution. It is the constitution that gives Republican states the right to create non-proportionate voting power. It is the constitution that gives Republican legislatures the right to overrule their voters in a Presidential election. It is the constitution that creates inter-state inequality by ensuring poor states have poor education and poor healthcare outcomes and wealthy states have good education and good healthcare outcomes.
