    My son is 20 months old and learning 5 languages. We’re employing all the suggested tips already so I was pleased to watch a like-minded mom describe her own journey :) I know how hard it is to organize the foreign language environment for your child. ❤❤ beautiful video! Any updates on their language progress?

    I'm an ESL teacher and teach Koreans English on KZread but this is something Korean parents really want to do, teach their kids English even though they cant speak it. I'll watch this and learn and tell other Korean parents how to teach their kids English. If I talk about your video I'll link to it in my description. Is that fine with you? I loved that I found your channel!

    I really enjoyed seeing the two of your kids doing their best to converse back and forth to each other. The words are definitely there and I can believe in time they'll be extremely fluent. Your son seems excited to speak and encourages your daughter. I'm curious to see what happens in the future. I'm in the process of teaching my kids ASL with common words. I also bought an arabic dictionary and I have an app that teaches the letters and another that quizzes the user on the words that are being introduced in each category.

    Just discovered your channel and wanted to mention, I LOVE your energy! You are so positive and informative and upbeat without being frantic -- a lot of channels speed up speech or cut out pauses to the point that listening to them can be almost exhausting, but watching you I feel both inspired and calmed at the prospect of teaching my kiddo more languages. Also, please give yourself more credit! American education is just painfully bad at teaching languages so if you don't feel like you are a confident speaker but you do have receptive fluency in Spanish, you are beyond monolingual, even if you don't feel like you can claim to be bilingual. I don't know what the word is for those of us in the in-between space there, but there should be one. And it's amazing what you are doing for your kids. I'm so motivated by watching this. Thank you for sharing!!

    Thank you so much! You’re right! There should be a term to describe all of the non-fluent yet fairly conversational language speakers. So glad you are on this journey with your family too. It’s been challenging but I’m in it for the long term. Can’t wait to share more updates. I feel like everytime I share on this platform I learn so much from the other parents sharing their experiences too. Love it!

It's hard to manage equal exposition to all these languages and japanese is harder because I don't speak it and my in laws live in Argentina. However watching your videos gave me a hope. Thank you so much for this comment! I plan to keep sharing our journey. It really helps me as well to read these because it is such a long journey and commitment. Actually today I took my daughter to the nail salon and the ladies doing our pedicures spoke Spanish. She spoke to them the entire time in Spanish. I had no clue what they were saying to each other most of the time. I reminded me that I need to work on my own language journey. You are so lucky to have so many languages within the family. Keep going and exposing them to each in some way consistently. It really helps ❤️

    Great question! I still have 3 of my 4 kids in a language immersion school. And I also still have 2 of them taking online classes to continue speaking to native speakers. It’s really a long term commitment so that they don’t lose the language skills entirely from lack of use. But it’s really rewarding when I see them having conversations in the foreign language.

    I'm so interested in this topic! I'm 33 and I have a 19 month old daughter. I'm Italian living in Italy. I studied English in high school but I couldn't speak at all.. I thought languages weren't for me.. but I was so in love with this language!!!! At 27 I decided to study it by myself taking few classes here and there.. It took me ages to reach the intermediate level.. I would like to introduce English to my baby.. till now I let her watch cartoons in English since I'm so embarrassed to teach her things with my broken accent.. I found a kindergarten where kids are exposed to English 4 hours per day.. but my concern is that the kids who are attending this school aren't that good in their native language (italian) and they don't speak English either.. (age 3 to 5)... I'm confused... I don't know what to do...

    Hi! Don't worry about the other small children because they are learning too. Most of the children in my children's school didn't know how to speak Mandarin at first but learned through their teachers. And their accents were perfect by the end of the year. Remember that language learning is a long term commitment for children. As long as you keep them in programs to teach English they will learn it much better than we learn languages as adults studying. It's harder for us. Also, English is tough because there are so many rules and rule breaking. To start early with English is definitely a good idea. The cartoons are a great start too. You are doing a great job!

    You can hire a babysitter who speaks in the target language, and play songs/videos in the target language as well. My daughter started listening to songs in Mandarin and watching Chinese Emma videos (here on KZread) when she was that age. Then at 2 years old we started weekly Mandarin lessons. At 3 years old we sent her to an immersion school for Mandarin.

    Thank you! How much screen time does each language gets? Did you play Chinese videos for certain time period and than Spanish? • @BrittanyKellyTV

    @@KM-rs5dx At that age I only showed videos for about 15 mins a day per language. It was more important to have a real person who speaks directly to them. PandaTree is an online service that has Spanish and Mandarin for children. Also, you can schedule language learning on Verbling. You will need to search for a Verbling teacher who works with very small children and keep each session shorter (no longer than 30 mins). You can do that a few times a week, but daily exposure is better.

    @@cristabel62 Yes! I can only speak English and I hired a sitter to only speak Spanish to her. My daughter’s first words were actually in Spanish instead of English. Their brains at that age easily can categorize each language. After that we started Chinese. As long as you stay consistent they learn it. Otherwise, they will forget if it isn’t used often.

    Hi Kelly, my husband and I are Vietnamese and living in VN. both of us can speak English fluently. We're raising a bilingual kid. We aren't living close to our Vietnamese parents and only see them a few times a year. And my kids can speak English very well while her Vietnamese is so bad because we mainly speak to her in English. Due to Covid, she doesnt have many chances to interact with many people. So now our problem is she doesnt like Vietnamese people nor peers. The fact that she doesnt speak Vietnamese makes us so challenging to send her to school. she's two years old now. fyi it's not common here to raise bilingual kids and bilingual school is too expensive. Can you please give us advice?

    不用提前说你的孩子还小啊。没关系的。大家已经知道他们的年龄。学习第二个语言需要时间。加油妈妈! I teach Chinese virtually in an immersion style and I'm not Chinese. As long as the teacher is actually fluent students will learn haha It is great for them to be introduced as young as you feel like, as long as you help them stick to the journey. However some research shows that too many languages at once may not be the best method.

  • @BrittanyKellyTV

    @BrittanyKellyTV

    3 жыл бұрын

    Of course, you don’t have to be Chinese to teach it lol. For us, as long as the speaker is a native Chinese speaker we will select that teacher, whether it’s for Chinese or Spanish. I know plenty of English speakers who are fluent in English, but they aren’t native speakers. There is a difference. May you give more detail about this research you refer to? How many is “too many” in terms of quantity of languages learned at once? Does it specify age? We have been successful with 3 spoken languages and ASL so far. At this point, I definitely feel comfortable adding another one, but it’s a time commitment for each language. Also, a link would be great! Thanks!

    @@BrittanyKellyTV (referencing a sarcastic comment above yours) Some people just are comfortable being "Momma's boys" their whole lives, and unfortunately were not taught to expand their horizons (some people naturally do, but some need positive feedback from their parents and not be disciplined for thinking outside the box). It's interesting how many "momma's boys" are "players" as well, and treat their ladies in non-optimal ways in order to please their overly possessive mommas (as no women could possibly be good enough for their sons, other than the mommas). Obviously, mothers should be respected, but overall I feel bad for these people like above, as they are often manipulated and trained into this mindset without a sense of balance with the world around them. Anyway, thanks again for helping us to get out of our narrow mindsets and plan for the future. I think most children would be very thankful as adults, for the leg-up they are given by a parent who is passionate about their learning 🤗. I definitely wish I had early age language opportunities like the ones you mentioned and will try to implement your ideas should I be blessed with children in the future!
