BikeSafe - Riding out with Northants Police

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

A full day, 150 miles, a tank of fuel and some world-class biking company.
Here's my take on BikeSafe, when I get to ride out with the finest and also get to film it.

What can I say? It was an absolute pleasure to spend a day with two experienced bikers! I've enjoyed every minute of this, learnt a lot, had a fantastic time and the feedback I got from both Neil and Chris was very useful and practical - thank you both! IAM observed rides have restarted now, this day and experience helps getting Advanced (or F1RST?).

Thank you so much for allowing me to film your ride. Please stay in touch and let me know hiw your IAM goes. Check out my 'boxed set of IAM films too.

I've done a few of these and I'm glad you got the opportunity to do another one mate, and in some decent weather which makes the day a whole lot more enjoyable - it's a shame with staffing levels and financial constraints that more places can't be made available for people to take advantage of an opportunity to go out with riders of this calibre. Interesting to see such a mix of riding abilities and experience of the riders attending the day too. One of the best things about these days are that the check ride lets the guys see what level you're at and they can pitch what they demonstrate to you, and their advice on how you can improve, at a very personal level, tailored solely to you. A lot of the Police riders are trained to Instructor and Escort Group level and if you can get past the fact that you have a Police Officer following you, it's an opportunity not to be missed. It's a great fun day and you'll come away having learnt something, no matter what level you ride at - the boys and girls of Traffic are the best at what they do, as well as all that knowledge and training, they're riders by choice and people with huge natural ability and a real passion for motorcycles. To have your riding assessed by someone with their experience and qualifications, and to get their advice on how you can improve to keep yourself safer is an experience that's well worth going for. I'm glad to see that since you've come back to riding, you've learnt one of the most important lessons - if you ever reach the stage where you think that you know it all - it's time to hang your keys up. Well done for promoting another take on improving riding safety and stay safe on that rather lovely Ducati :-)

Thanks for that insight Dale. Totally agree with all your points. I think the day we stop learning is the day we grow old. For me, it's such a privilege to ride with these folk. They've got way more training and experience than I'll ever have, so hopefully a little of that ethos and advice rubs off and sticks.

Neil, I've really enjoyed watching your IAM Back 2 The Bike videos, I've seen all of them apart from the actual Test itself, as I got distracted into this one with the Bike Safe Northants Police. I'm coming Back to the Bike myself and you've inspired me to enrol for IAM myself, and it's heartening to know that the Worcester/Hereford branch are full, so I'm waiting a few weeks for an opening for me to begin my own IAM training journey. I've loved watching your videos and then going out riding myself in and around Worcester/shire trying to put it into practice. Very informative, very helpful and very inspiring - to know that I've been motivated to sign up to IAM is the biggest compliment I can pay you. Thank You.

Thanks for this video Neil, I enjoyed it very much. Since returning to riding about 12 years ago I have completed Bikesafes with Beds Herts and the London Team and learned a great deal every time. While they do focus on an introduction to advanced riding we have found they are happy to accept people who have been previously, and may already have an advanced qualification. London Bikesafe even organised a special day for my club - Herts and Beds Advanced Motorcycle Group - a few years back. Bedfordshire were using a different format - Ride safe - for a year or two, but I believe they are now following the national format, albeit that cuts have impacted on a great resource and, I would have thought, providing great interaction with a section of the general public

Thoroughly enjoyed that matey... unfortunately there’s nothing like that over here... with such a short riding season, there’s no motorcycle cops in the interior... my riding buddy here is a retired motorcycle cop from the island... literally wrote the book on police riding... we’ve discussed running advanced riding courses / refreshers here... it’s just unfortunate that it’s so foreign a concept to further your skills that it’s been tough to get it going. Now training new riders... no problem, very successful with that ... we even have them bring their riding buddy, if they’re going to have a regular one, on the ‘road day’ ride... and every session we have comments from the experienced riders ‘wow, I even learnt something today’... maybe, one day, it’ll become more acceptable. Cheers Neil... great to see you on the steed once again.

If the police do annual refresh training, how much more should we? I want to be the best I can be. I want to be trained by the best, and there's simply none better than the blokes i rode with. I noticed that during the rides you were changing lane positions according to the bends and the view ahead etc. but were you using the 5 lane positions or the 3 lane positions as sometimes you appeared to be close to the verge/kerbs and at other times close to the central white broke and solid white lines. Or maybe its just the camera angle that gave this impression. Which was it. ? Ta.

  • @Back2TheBike

I'm aware of the 3 and 5 lane positions but don't think of them. My position is simply a balance of view v safety and prepping for whatever is down the road. For example, on a left hander I'd like to be near the crown to extend view round the corner, but if there's an HGV coming I'll give up position for a safer place.

@@Back2TheBike I am the same. What we learn or have seen many years or so ago becomes second nature and then we do them automatically without thinking. However for the benefit of newbies. In advanced riding there are now only three positions on our carriageway. Previous to the Police Motorcycle Roadcraft of 2013 there were in fact 5 positions. relating to ones positioning on the road. Positions, were numbered 1 to 5 for ease of training, Number 1 was removed as it was close to the kerb/verge and thus dangerous and position 5 which was close to or actually on the mid line and that was considered dangerous also as one might, on a left hand bend meet a vehicle coming the other way cutting that bend and heading straight for one. So position 1 and 5 were removed and the other three now became numbers 1,2 and 3. Position number 1 is now the inside tyre line of a car, position 3 is the outside tyre line of a car and position 2 known as the sump line is now any positioning between those two others. The purpose of these positioning was basically for a greater forward view for when a police officer needed to improve his forward vision whilst travelling at very high speeds, something that he could and we also could do as previously there were no speed limits out of towns. That was up to the mid 60's when the National speed limits were introduced. In reality with a country wide limit of now 60 mph we don't actually need to see as far ahead as they had to do as a result of them being able to travel at much higher speeds. . By that I mean a police officer who might have to do 100 mph. plus in an emergency. We are not police officers and not on an emergency ride. Some would argue that much of this movement around the positioning on our carriageway to obtain a longer view, due to our present speed limits is now unnecessary. We can no longer use excessive speeds on our country roads and therefore we no longer need to obtain as great a viewing distance of the road ahead, at any speed over 60 mph. Police officers and emergency services might have to sometimes but its not necessarily a requirement of civilians being limited to the NSL.

Hi Adrian, good to hear from you and glad the films have helped. Here's why I changed the RT kzread.info/dash/bejne/p393286Mk8XLeJc.html , essentially after a major heart issue the RT was too heavy to lug around, I wasn't touring, and added to the fact my mentor (SeaFlyFisher - see his YT channel for his Masterclass series - best instruction on the web) recommended the Monster R to improve my cornering. After a few years I've just traded again for a Ducati Multistrada V2S which gives me best of both worlds. Again, the video's on the channel if you want the lowdown. IT's a Swiss Army Knife of a bike, does everything well and worth a test ride. Best wished with your IAM - keep me posted!

Can I ask what is probably going to be a stupid question. I’ve just started on motorbikes, done CBT and got a 125 so I’m a total beginner. The instructor told me to always stop with left foot down, right foot on back brake, in 1st gear ready to go. I noticed at 10:42 of this video at the roundabout/lights the 2 in front and I’m guessing you as well are all stopped with right foot down and front brake on. Is this a classic difference between the box ticking exercise that a learner test is and real world and advanced driving/riding?

Hi Richard. No such thing as a stupid question. I'm not familiar with the CBT - in my day you rode round the block and a bloke with a trilby hat said 'you've passed' as long as you didn't fall off ;-) I'd be very surprised if they would fail you for a right foot down. I prefer it for these reasons: 1. Less stress on my left hand and no chance of hand slipping accidentally to engage drive. 2. Bike is held by front brake so won't roll. 4. I'm watching my mirrors so can quickly click into first if there's a risk of being rear-ended. 3. If it's good enough for the police who am I to disagree? The only time I do left foot down is if I'm on a steepish incline and bike might roll, so hold it on the rear brake.

Yes all that makes sense. Like I say I bet it’s just a box ticking thing they want to see your in the habit of being ready to go as soon as you’ve come to a stop. Just like with cars you learn to drive after the L test.

There is an operational reason why we (the cops) stop with our right foot down and its in relation to escort duties where we need to have quick access to first gear having stopped the traffic. There's a bit more to it but essentially that's why. For hill starts I generally stop left foot down and hold on the rear brake.

Nice video. I'm just coming back after 40 years away! Have to get my DAS this time. Glad tho - its all so much harder these days with all the traffic. One thing you don't mention about bike training - the key thing is practice, practice, practice. Hours in the saddle. It is all so hard work when you start because your brain is having to conciously process so much continuously. With many hours of practice under your belt, some of it becomes instinctive which leaves room for your brain to concentrate on better learning. The first few days out with an instructor left me mentally exhausted. But it gets easier and more enjoyable with experience. Like most things I guess. I think all car drivers should have to watch videos like this as part of their training. Most just don't have any consideration for bikers.

Have arranged for an assessment ride in a couple of weeks time and will then progress through the training. I agree that practice, practice and even more practice is, as long as its top quality stuff, allows all the knowledge to sink in and become an instinctive part of your riding. @@garygasman1 I take your point, and of course I appreciate we all have our different opinions, but in 40 yrs of riding, I still can't accept that wide positions are 'ever' safe. Advanced riding says never give up safety for position, but why put yourself there in a potentially dangerous spot, which it must be otherwise they wouldn't have the caveat. The improved view you get around the corner with these wide positions is (in my eyes) simply not proportional to the risk involved. I really prefer roadcraft Nottinghams view on Rd position..

@@garygasman1 can I clear something up Gary, at the risk of telling your granny to suck eggs. When the police /advanced riders take these wide positions, it has nothing to do with the quickest way through the bend (racing line as we know it) its to give them an early/improved view of what's around the bend. This is why in my previous comment to you, I stated that in my opinion, the benefits of this early/ improved view are disproportionate to the dangers of being so close to centre line or verge. In my humble opinion and with around 40 yrs biking experience, the position you adopt is dictated by what you see in front of you and what you anticipate will be in front of you. It's constantly changing.

You're right that the certificate means little. Its what you do with the training that matters. In some cases it's possible to overload a new rider or driver with new techniques but many find it an ideal time to go straight into further training. Why not learn how to ride as safely as possible before bad habits set in? It can be difficult to undue some of these habits without lots of instruction and practice. This can cause frustration and some people give up as a result. Experience is great providing what you are practicing is correct and affords you the best amount of safety you and other road users deserve. Experience of doing things badly is counter productive. If you want to survive and get the most from your riding then learn to do it well.

Hi OFU, the boys are spot on and experience doesn't necessarily mean good, there are many shocking drivers that have years of experience under their belts - blokes in particular usually consider themselves to be excellent drivers especially if they're in that elite club that "passed their test first time" which normally automatically promotes your status to "Road God" and no-one can possibly teach you anything else. The reality is that the driving test qualifies you to drag the thing round town at thirty miles an hour, after which, it's time to learn to ride it, and with all due respect to the IAM and ROSPA, the supposed "Advanced" test is actually system and safety at the speed limit and the standard that all of us should be driving at - if they're honest, there are very few people that attend IAM, ROSPA, or BIKESAFE for the first time, that don't come away realising how much more there is to learn, to ride safer and better. I've said it many times that if I ever reach the point where I think I know it all, I'll hang my keys up and sell my bikes - you never stop learning. I don't like the word advanced, but the ladies and gents that run all of these further training courses do it to share their knowledge and to promote better and safer riding to reduce road casualties - what's not to like, and as Neil said, why not try a taster session - you might be surprised - stay safe out there and enjoy your bike - Dale
