I am convinced that orange is always the best color on vintage steel bikes.

How beautifully simple older classic bikes are to work on. Smashing video thank you.

Great job on this beautiful bike. It gives me the courage to work (or let someone) work on my Italian beauty (Faggin) from the late 1960s. It has indoor track tyres though, which raises the question whether to exchange them or not. Wish I would live closer. I would happily give it into your hands

That’s very kind - thanks for the lovely comments and watching. I suppose if you want to ride it outside it’s a must to exchange them. Depends if you are though 🤔

Cones and loose balls, I remember them well. You would leave a little play even after cinching the lock nut, the final compression of the quick release would take the play out - otherwise you'd over-tighten the hub.

I would only use copperslip or titanium anti seize grease on alloy/steel interfaces to prevent galvanic corrosion. Been riding steel bikes for over 50 years.

@@chrisjackson9978 thanks for sharing. Whilst I do see the benefit of this and was taught this at the very early start of my career , the bike industry generally feels as though copper grease is overkill for bike applications. There are some great products out there that if used alongside a regular service schedule maintains your bike and components really well. 👍

Sincere question-not being critical-why not true up the wheels while they were off the bike? Thank you, I enjoy watching your videos.

Hi Jeff, that’s a good question - I don’t know if you are aware but we hand build wheels and Paul’s approach is as follows: When it comes to fixing wheels, especially vintage ones, if they are straight and true they really don’t need any work. On an older wheel it is better to have less even tension through the spokes than have some loose and some tight. When it comes to truing old wheels spokes and nipples can be seized so actually trying them and repairing them can make the tension in the spokes uneven. Hope that makes sense. Thank you for watching and glad you enjoy the videos 👍🙌

Just found your channel and am working my way through your videos. I have a Mercian King of Mercia bike, built with race geometry about 10 years ago to be similar to the steel bikes I used to race on. Mine is fitted with a modernish Camag groupset and wheels and rides very well indeed. I keep wondering whether to put downtube gear levers on it, as I have the bosses for this, but don't know if these would have enough pull for modern 11/12 speed groupsets. I have subscribed to you and look forward to seeing more of your videos 😊

Thank you for your kind comments and subscribing - really appreciate it. It probably would work - but I think shifting the gears would be more fiddly as there is such little increments between the gears compared to a 5/6 speed. Sounds like a lovely build!

Love watching this. I have a 1972 Mercian King of Mercia, built for Denton cycles in Newcastle. Couple of genuine questions, why did you swap the BB from Campag to Shimano, and do you grease the BB crank tapers? I’ve always done them dry. Cheers.

Hi Thanks for watching and your comments. The grease is from ParkTool. 👍✅ Just to clarify the chainset must have been a replacement chainset and whoever fitted it needed to increase the size of the BB otherwise the chainset rubbed on the frame. Shimano are our preferred brand for square taper BB
