Vintage Trek Road Bike Gets Index Shifting! PLUS...BB & HS overhauls, bar end shifters and leather!

Viewer/Customer John wanted index shifting on this bike as soon as it became a thing in this world, but his local shop talked him into a new bike (probably the right call at the time, FWIW). Anyway, we did some work to that other bike, but what he really wanted, was his original bike to go click, click, click in all the right ways. I had just stripped a bike with all the best parts from the day to give THIS OLD BIKE the facelift it needed. I'm super happy with how this turned out and I'm sure John will be too!

In the interest of full disclosure, I did add the Panaracer Pacellas and the Brooks B-17. The last time I broke in a Brooks seat was in the 70's. Now being in MY 70 I'm not sure I'll live long enough to fully break this thing in, but we'll see. I've now ridden the bike about 300 miles and it is absolutely sweet. A little bigger low gear would be nice, but it rides really sweet, and I'm really glad Andy did the extra stuff to make the little things show up in the ride. 😎😎

Lovely bike. I would have moved the brake levers down a little bit, to make them more usable in the drops but its cool if that is how the owner likes them.

Shouldn’t the shifter cables go all the way along the handlebars? Under the wrap. It would look neater and less risk of entanglement.

You're really ragging on that wheelset! From what I've hear you usually leave a ball's space or two in the race of the bearing to keep them from binding with each other while rolling about.

This bike needs those Pasela tires (tan sidewall) and a brown Brooks saddle to match the bar tape and hoods! Plus the whole ride would become as buttery as those shifts ++

I recently came across your channel after I acquired an 80s Fuji Gran Tourer and a 90s Trek 1220. I'm in the process of fixing them both up and have learned a lot from watching your channel. The Fuji looks almost exactly like this vintage Trek. Now I'm thinking I want bar end shifters and brown bar tape!

The landlord has a number of apartment complexes that he owns and people move in and out on a regular basis and they leave stuff. I with a couple of others do cleanups of said apartments and frequently there are bikes left. Those bikes are evaluated and either refurbished or stripped and tossed in the recycle. I just found 4 bikes left on the side of a road waiting for someone to take them away . Two will be worked on and one stripped for parts whereas the last one was not salvageable except for inner tubes! I went into Obsession Bikes on the north shore where I live and they have a nice mountain bike there for 20500.00 and my recycled mountain bike is about 43.00 . Hmmmmn less bragging rights though!

Love, love the content. I always learn something new. Walking bike encyclopedia. One suggestion, music is too loud and distracting. Maybe tone it down or don’t have it on the entire video. You my friend have a great, narrative voice which I much rather listen to. Just an opinion from a faithful watcher. Cheers.

Shoulda put a hybrid handlebar with some sweep for more comfortable riding. Very nice bike and the bar tape looks spot on, just needed a brown brooks saddle.

Started getting teary eyed remembering doing those old adjustable B/Bs in the mid 80s and wishing I could go back to that time😢
