    would any chainring work as long as its 130 bcd and 5 holes? I see options of 39T from inner chainrings for 2by cranksets. Do those work aswell? I still have the 50t installed but want to try 44 or even 39 since I almost never use the hardest gear event on flats in my commute but I have hills on my daily commute/rides. The 44t brompton chainring is quite expensive here in my area so I wanted to try a 44T or 39T first (from cheaper brands) before I commit.

  • @veloworks9266
    @veloworks9266Күн бұрын

    Yes there is no reason why any chainring won’t work but they would need to be for a 3/32” chain . If you go for a track specific chain ring this won’t work as they require a different chain. So yes the 130mm bcd and 5 holes will work. And I think 39t would be the lowest you could go.

    @@veloworks9266 thanks. Would the speed of the chain ring matter or can i still ise the stock brompton chain? I see some 39t innerchainrings that are 10speed. Also related questions, do find the problem of spinning out on flats with the 39t or only on downhills?

    Another great video, Paul and Sarah. As an old Brompton rider (old in both senses) it's always interesting to see how Bromptons wear and how they are being maintained. Re Brilliant Bikes - an excellent Brompton YT channel and dealer - nice to see you promoting them and I hope they appreciate it. Finally, totally agree with your "all or nothing" approach regarding bikes that are dangerous. Wheels can literally explode which is not what you want when mixing with machines that can kill you.

    Retro builds are pricey and the more "exotic" the worse it gets. I actually managed to go and see Alex Moulton as a student in my final year of ID/T (Industrial Design / Transport), Coventry in 1989. Unfortunately there was only one train to and from Bradford on Avon in the day but he kindly forwent his afternoon "nap" to see me. He got a little short tempered at my lack of understanding of bike engineering when I asked about small wheels going offroad, but did at least give me a go on the then brand new Moulton ATB (not XTB). Honestly, it unfortunately felt like a bit of a seesaw going uphill as the front and back suspension were a bit too forgiving. But heh, it was generous of Dr. Moulton to give up his time and entertain a pretty clueless student!! If I came across one now for a 100 quid I'd probably put my heart into doing it up too!

    Just finished the video you asked for comments on other cycling tours I’d like to see you do. Scotland Isle of sky would be fantastic. I was sick that day on the boat and couldn’t go then the pandemic hit - had planned to go back the next year 😢 I’ve never been able to get back - other places in Scotland would be good also. Also specific cycling tours on the Brompton, which is the bike I’m about to buy … I’m going to try a four-speed electric but will probably trade that in within a year for a 12 speed electric. The electric is for my commute so I don’t get sweaty to and from … I live in a hilly town for the more gears the better … but the 12 speed is really my dream for leaving the battery at home, and someday flying to UK/Europe for short bicycle tours the kind of that you seem to like to do. I have learned so much hope to see some of these tours in the future discussed or advised you don’t necessarily have to do them but if you could just advise on how people could do them, that would be fantastic. Cheers! 🍻

    I “think” I’d only be interested in a pedal assist. The twist and go variety are so heavy they delete a bike’s inherent advantages, and there are some really great “twist and go” alternatives called motorcycles. That said, the SECRET to a more powerful e-bike is that they’re still sold as utility bikes, whereas even a cheap motorcycle isn’t. “Horses for courses”

    Good video, agree with what you said. Am saving up for a good ebike and one main criteria is post purchase support; will get it from a bike shop and most shops are now selling ebikes from reputable companies along with the brands' non-electric models. As you said, longevity and support are important, worth the initial extra expence. Of course, the saving up part does try patience, as in do I save up for the Brompton electric, or get a 1500-2k pricex bike now...but would have to wait longer for the Brompton. So far, am resisting impatience. 😉

    I agree products require a good back up service to maintain the longevity. I have just bought a second hand electric Brompton. Private sale barely two years old knowing that the back up would be in place. The shock is the cost of a replacement battery unit (not that I need one) as a price sense checking before buying still expensive at £550.00. Then if you divide by the life usage it works out at £183.00 per annum for three years and if you get five years usage its £110.00 per annum / 52 = £2.11 per week. Your quote "I love my Brompton" 👍 Good points raised.
