BIKE ISSUES The Moto Guzzi V7. Problems starting and the headlight is broken. Michelin tyres are ???

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

The starter switch on the Guzzi 850 has failed again and the headlight has rattled itself broken in 2 places. A replacement OEM unit is over £200 and the switch is a lot of money as well. Oh, and the new Michelin road classic tyres? we really need to talk about them.
All things considered though the bike was so much fun and just perfect for the fast and twisty roads in Normandy. Most of the roads were good surface especially compared to those in the UK and blissfully quiet of traffic. A great way to spend a few days away from the desk.

I do have an identical Moto Guzzi 850 Special V7 as you have there. I don't have any experience of the tyres you mention but, Michelin tyres generally last about twice as long as a Pirelli tyre of the same size and type. This can only be because the Michelin tyres have less grip. I'd take a guess here, but I'll be looking at a Pirelli Angel GT. for my next set. I have another motorcycle that does have Pirelli tyres on it. They are about a 1/4 worn after 2100 miles. I have had my headlamp apart and I can say as an experienced engineer, it was made for a total of .12p. When mine falls apart, I'll be getting a metal replacement from India! Ride safe. 👍👍. (As a result of seeing you video, I've stripped the switchgear off mine and sprayed a dab of ACF50 in there to keep the corrosion at bay.)

I’ve got the same bike . I’m currently waiting for my 4th starter / mode switch , they are not fit for purpose . Moto Guzzi are aware of this but have done nothing to rectify it . This is my second V7 , I did 55000 miles on my 2012 Stone and yes , the headlight disintegrated on that too , amongst a litany of dodgy cycle parts .

I agree with the Michelins being very squirely on painted surface. I’m going to try Bridgestone Batleaxes next, been my go to tyre for years now.

I've got those Michelins on Nerys and I really like them. I've found them great in all weathers ( you know I really do ride in all weathers) the only small issue I've had is their lack of grip on slushy ice! The headlight shell is no doubt the same as the iii or the same design, at least. The bracket for that holds the clip for the retaining screw is poorly designed so it breaks... I'm thinking Araldite might be a solution but a new unit is probably best. I think I'm going for a full LED unit if I do replace it - all weather riding needs a good headlight! Hope you get sorted. Been enjoying these films from France. Looks lovely.

Thank you. I am going to try to get used to the tyres, maybe let 2psi out and see how it goes. With the headlight, I have had the housing off the bike and am going to try to fix it today. As the unit is possibly trashed anyhow, the securing mount is half sheared, I might as well have a go. Araldite and use the existing female screw thing. The light bowl is quite slim and replacements (alchemy parts) appear to be a little long in the rear by about 20mm that might foul the main headstock wiring. While I am at it, i will try to take a look at the starter and see if i can give it a clean and lube. I am please you have enjoyed France with me and thank you for your advice.

Well, don’t take my word for it. I have the pressure set to 36psi back and front. New V7s come with these tyres and my dealer is not seeing any negative feedback. I am going to go a little lower with psi and see if that makes a difference. He has offered to have me back in and check they are ok. I’ve had a few sets of road pilots on my previous BMW and they were awesome. Could it be that over 7500miles I just got ‘used’ to the dunlops? I am being kind because I really did feel they were coated in diesel in the wet.

45 year biker & I’ve had no problems with the Michelin Road classics. The ride is a little hard but I’ve no idea if that’s the suspension or tyre’s. For me they track very well & compared to my Harley’s they last well longer. I’ve done 5000 on my Stone special edition, tyres look brand new. Could use a steeper profile to help it tip in a bit quicker but ofc would make it a bit twitchy so happy with them all together. Yup a worry point for me is the headlight unit on mine to as it’a plastic unit led which looks sealed up. But I’ve had no problems at all with the bike so far. And lov it. Only niggle for me is for some reason I have to charge the battery every 2 to 3 days for 3 hrs to top it up. My other bikes can be left for 2 to three weeks & then only need 30 mins to top up. Go figure….

Hello. Thanks for your comment. You describe perfectly. The ride is a little (lot) hard from the tyres for me. I would prefer to have a tyre that needs replacing at 5k and rides well to longer life. I guess most riders of classic bikes are generally on the central rubber most of the time! 😂 The headlight? Yeah. Be careful if you change the bulb. Enjoy your ride. ✌️

Check your wheels for round especially the rear. I have problems with my ktm 890 adventure, wire wheels first ride out on second set of tyres, road was wet and it felt I was riding on ice and the front was jittery in the dry. Had wheels checked and rear was shaped like an egg and side to side sway..
