If you're canyon carving, how do the brakes & suspension hold up, as this is not a particularly sporty bike! And would it benefit from a flyscreen, assuming this won't spoil the aesthetics?

As a former owner of a moto guzzi v7 III carbon shine, I can attest it's a great bike. However, at some point I got it in my head that maybe there was a better bike for me. I saw triumph's new bike the triumph trident at the end of 2020. I was enticed by the tridents price, specs and looks. I preordered the trident and I traded-in my v7 III for it. After riding the Trident for a few months, I realized I missed the power delivery and feel of the v7 III. So then I traded-in the trident for a new triumph street twin figuring it would deliver what I was looking for. I was wrong; even though the street twin does have torque down low, a relaxed riding position and retro styling similar to v7 III, it didn't give me the same visceral feeling and enjoyment that the v7 III did. I also missed that whopping 5.5 gallon gas tank. Anyways, I am now in the process of selling the street twin and purchasing another v7 III carbon shine.

Another great video, thank you. One of the things that I like about MG's having owned 2 over the years (I'm old and have been riding since the 70's) is the ease of owner maintenance and service. I like to do my own wrenching and these bikes are very easy to work on. You don't have to disassemble half of the bike to service it. Spark plugs, valve checks/adjustments are right in the open with lock nuts. No buckets and shims to deal with. Oil filter in the engine case so it's protected, instead of sticking out the front of the bike right behind the front tire. Low maintenance shaft drive, just change the gear oil per the manual. MG's are beautiful machines IMHO. As for the Dart fly screens, Stewart Fillingham has an interesting video about his experience with this and his Triumph. They seem to be hit or miss. Ride safe.

Love the bike and I think you bought it for all the right reasons. The only thing that was a little 'fingernails on a blackboard' for me was that running in your beautiful new (250 mile) bike by going down the interstate is a terrible way to run it in. The main issue is that on an interstate you will be using constant throttle for long periods which is one of the no-no's for break-in. Best practice is to use a variety of speeds/revs and avoid lugging (too slow) and thrashing (too fast). Obviously any such advice is a little late now but just an FYI. Great job on the Mistrals BTW

This is an interesting video. This is almost exactly my story. I wanted some classic it for long distance. I too was up in the air between the triumph and Guzzi. I was going to get a V7III 2020 at a local dealer and was about to put a down on one. Decided to do some more research and there pops up the 2021 Special. Once I read up on it I was sold. The 850 and gas take got me aside from other things. You are pretty much say my story. I got hooked on guzzi when I did a European solo tour on a 1986 Moto guzzi that I bought for 1500. Ever since I knew I was hooked and the history. I’ll be doing videos on my Guzzi too since I’m with you on how there needs to be more interest on the historic bikes. Also, I got a lot of slack for choosing a Guzzi over a BMW and Triumph. I still want a BMW scrambler in the future but I might stay with Guzzi and get a their scrambler. Keep up the great work!

Currently own a 1989 Moto Guzzi Mille GT 1000 cc that I have had for 20 years. Once took me 120 miles on one cylinder at highway speed when one spark plug wire crapped out on a Sunday morning with no shops open. At almost 70 years old it has gotten too heavy to maneuver in and out of situations. Purchased a 2013 Moto Guzzi V7 Stone at more than 100 pounds less wet weight. Absolutely love it. Will stay with Moto Guzzi for the rest of my riding life. I have owned BMW, Laverda, Ducati, Moto Morini, Triumph, BSA, Zundapp, Indian, Suzuki, Kawasaki, Cagiva and loved them all for different reasons, but the fact that I can physically handle the weight of a bike that will cruise (illegally) at 85-90 mph for as long as I need, looks good, is reliable and affordable and unique, why shop anywhere else?- -Mike Battle

My Kawasaki W800 has the dual analog gauges and I love it, but I'm going for the new modern digital V7 and I love the DRL "wing" on the headlight. It's a hard compromise on windshields. Putting a small windshield on does take the wind off your chest and reduces the wind fatigue of having to death-grip the handlebars while fighting the wind for hours, but it does put more buffeting on the helmet, but a taller windshield will eliminate the buffeting on the helmet but not everyone likes the tall windshield.

Thank you for your logical decision making, real world feedback and enjoyable videos! I am seriously considering this exact bike in 2022 as it is "drop dead gorgeous" and has ABS (my low skill need!) I am a prior owner of two VERY special Moto Guzzis that to this day I regret letting go of! (1991 California III w/ the big valve Lemans Motor (very rare & very fast!) and a 2004 V11 Lemans Sport). I am still around today because I acknowledged to myself that my riding skill level was just not up to my ever increasing need/desire to push the envelope and ultimately would not keep me off the pavement and/or out of Jail! Fast Cars have just do not fill the motorcycle void and I now MUST get back on a higher tech Guzzi and now enjoy laying back and enjoy the road again. So, I think this bike may be the ticket!

Your line of thinking sounds exactly like what I went through. Was about to get a v7 iii copper bronze one then new one came out. I didnt end up getting one (yet) though because a deal popped up on husqvarna svartpilen 701 that was unbelievably low and couldn't pass it up. But still may end up getting me the 850 v7 in the future unless something else pops up new and better. I'll just want the stone version though. Like the new modern take on it and enjoy the led dash reminds me of the 80s. The special is definitely good looking bike though as well with its own take on the model. We are of one mind when it comes to the reasons for choosing the v7: practicality (200+ mile tank range, shaft drive, ABS); style; heritage; plenty of usable power and torque; no excessively complex, fragile electronics; the symmetry and classic looks of twin analogue clocks; and very comfortable. It is a bike for riding and enjoying in the real world. It scores highest on the most important measure: smiles per miles. Breaking procedure is pretty standard for every bike, I just generally choose not to follow them as strict as the manufacturer would want you to. A lot of people give me crap for that, but even the head mechanic at the dealership told me generally the same thing is the way I think right it like it's your bike just try not to stay in one gear for too long. Which is why when on highway rides on these before I finish my break in I would go through and switch between 5th and 6th gear to kind of change up the RPMs. As for the first oil change mine I did at 650 but in the manual it actually says 900 miles

It seems commonplace for motorcycle journalists to test a bike for what it isn’t. Its not a sport, adventure, tour, cruiser, or dirt bike. It’s like they get lost without being able to pigeon hole a bike into a category. How about a traditional motorcycle. You could argue a traditional bike is today’s retro bike. Not everyone wants to have either a screaming sport bike they can’t use the power on, or a full boat tour bike, or an off road pretender adventure bike.

Ok. Well I guess we will see if anything happens later. If I go off of all the tests that independent parts manufacturers and bike enthusiast have conducted, then there should be no problems, outside of the normal wear and tear of the bike. 40 years ago I would agree with your statement, due to inconsistencies in manufacturing practices. However with modern quality control standards and testing, not only done by the manufacturer but also the EU, I see it as being something immediately causing a problem, and not something that might show up later, after another 15 or 20,000 miles are put on the bike. Just my thoughts, I don't want any of this to be read as mean or snippy. Just a simple well intentioned statement on my views of the subject. I truly do appreciate you taking the time to comment on the video, and look forward to hearing from you in the future. Ride Happy!

Hello René, I get asked this a lot, and the simple answer is that, there is no study, with documentation or replicable results, that show Breaking in a modern bike per the manufacturers recommended break in process has any different outcome than riding the bike how you regularly would if it were not in the break in period. for one of the most recent tests done with a full inspection of all parts involved during break in, you can check out this video. kzread.info/dash/bejne/qqSjyc6optzfj5s.html&ab_channel=MotorcyclistMagazine . Even My Moto Guzzi Mechanic, said the same thing, "Ride it like it's your bike, Don't baby it, and don't stay at the same RPM for too long." so I try not to red line it, or maintain the same rpm, but other than that, i just ride it like i would any other bike. Also, if anything were to go wrong with it, I would rather it happen within the first month of me owning the bike, and then after the warranties up

Enjoyed your video and report ... congrats on a great bike! I've been riding Guzzi's since the 1970's and currently have a V7III Special, which I love. I also own a 2020 Royal Enfield Continental GT650 - cool little cafe racer, but a little tiring on longer rides. I am quite sure I will be trading both of these bikes (the GT is on ebay right now) ... on a V7 850 .... I need to get down to one bike and the enhanced power and torque of the 850 has won me over. My question ... you mention that you are considering Mistral mufflers in polished SS, that is what I have one my V7III (they're fantastic!) ... but I cannot find a source for them for the new 850. Where are you finding any info on them? Possibly my V7III Mistrals may fit ... but the stock exhaust look quite different between the V7III and the 850! Thanks and enjoy that Guzzi and keep up the excellent video work!

I've had the Royal Enfield Interceptor 650 for two years, and I'm looking at selling it this summer and getting something else. I had a leaking fork seal at 700 miles, and at just over 3000 I've got a small oil leak that I have to run down. It's still under warranty, but the dealership always tells me the same thing: "we can't get parts." While I don't mind finding my own parts and doing the work myself, it becomes a little frustrating. Also, the aftermarket hasn't really come to the US, so you've got to have everything shipped in from the UK or India, which is an expensive prospect. Great bikes, but their reputation among owners as world-beaters is completely unwarranted, in my opinion.

One notes that a majority of the videos that show bikes on the move feature them on roads built for cars. Motorcycling roads are rarely shown. Why is this? One theory: big bikes are very heavy, often well above 400 lbs. Weight is detrimental to handling, so windy roads are no longer appropriate. Too many bikes are now two wheel cars.

As far as your hour long video, I wouldn't even watch it. I usually watch videos that are between eight to 25 minutes long. I also like the V7 Special better than the stone and the Speciall has just the right amount of chrome. My best freind just bought a blue V7 Special like yours two weeks ago. I would buy one today, blue or silver, doesn't matter to me but due to my wife's health issues we had to go to a trike a few years ago. She always rides with me and we've went over 300,000 miles in 20 years. (I've been riding since 1964) My wife has battled cancer eight times, had 12 surgeries in ten years, maxed out on chemo, radiation, and Cyber Knife treatments. She is currently on immunotheroay treatments and will be every 28 days for the rest of her life. When the cancer in her brain cause seizures we thought if she had a seizure on my two wheeled motorcycle it might cause an accident injuring both of us and possibly others. That's when we went to a trike. On a trike we feel I should be able to pull over and tend to her needs. We started dating in 1970. I like to tell people she was only 14. But the truth is she turned 15 a week later. We married one week after her high school graduation. Had two sons, which both had brain cancer (Glioblastoma). Our youngest died at 23. Our eldest survived but had a crippling srtroke at 38 and can no longer ride. Life is a bed of roses.... but look out for the thorns. Ride safe and enjoy every journey.

Matris makes a coil rear and a coil with external cartridge in chrome or black springs. When ordering state application and riders weight. I put the basic springs on my California 1400 due to both the additional expense of the more adjustable external cartridge type and the fact I can’t use them with the factory bags. I also purchased the full-front fork kit. It was an expensive upgrade but worth it for the 1400. I purchased my set during a 20% off sale. It took about eight weeks for everything to arrive.

I have the new Kawasaki W800 (not W900 you mentioned, which doesn't exist) and it's a great highway bike with a large fuel tank and it gets 66 mpg all the time or about 180 miles before the fuel light comes on. The bevel gear cam drive is the most unique in the business and the shim and bucket is the easiest valve adjustment you can get (the tappet slides out of the way to change the shim) and it's light years ahead of Triumph, but with a Triumph look. It was a 2 year bike as the W650 in 2000-2001 and the new 800 is going to be a two year bike with the 2020 and 2021 (and the price has just increased from MSRP $9199 to $11,200 and has already become a collector's bike), but I'm dealing on a new V7 Centenario right now just because they have captured my imagination. I love the W800 and hope I love the new V7 as much.

You want it because you want it more than other bikes and history. Check. Nothing about shaft, easy valve adjustments and servicing, the benefits of air cooling and single throttle bodies etc etc? Cool. I'm here because I want a simple motorcycle with shaft drive. BMW R9T was my first choice but is tuned for power and requires premium fuel.No good. Reading thru my MC classics magazines I find this Moto Guzzi easily on par with a 1975 Norton Commando and in fact rather than thinking of the wheezy front brake and spindly 40mm fork, the MG kit is a massive upgrade.

also wanting it because shaft drive, check, easy valve adjustments and maintenance, check, all of the other stuff, check, check, check. It was just a little harder for me to think on the road, or remember what i had already mentioned. There were quite a few gaps that i edited out of this video, due to drivers and rocks off of tractor trailers. lol But yes, all really great points that add to my love of the The Moto Guzzi Line, and especially to this bike.

No one tells me about 10 to 11 hours in the seat. Mixing with semis sucking the bike as they pass, rode hazards (tire treads, sheet metal, etc), heavy winds of Ok, Txs, Kansas, #***# deer, possums, coyots running across the road, but mainly the comfort to ride 10 hours and maintain the alertness of control. Riding a motorcycle across the country is work. You can't view the countryside, or the sky. You must be alert all the time. So, tell me how the bike cruises. I want a quiet, well-runniing bike. I could care less about the exhaust sounds - quite is better. Shaft drive, tubeless tires, wind pressure against you, ???

I have an 18 V7 III Special. It's slower than the 850, but similar size wise and in overall character. I ride mine 400+ miles between San Diego and Tucson with 36L Givi cases, no windshield, and aftermarket heated grips. I have almost 30,000 miles now, and it's a great commuter and good long distance motorcycle, although at 5'9, I'm pretty cramped between seat and pegs after two hors, and put my feet on the passenger pegs. The factory Dunlops suck... they wobble in rain grooves and feel brittle. I installed Michelin Pilots and they really improved highway stability and last twice as long. Wind at 80 works perfectly for this motorcycle seating position, and other vehicles like semis is absolutely no problem. If you're my height or shorter, it's great all around. The engine is smooth, ergonomics are good, it's easy to work on, it looks and sounds beautiful, is built in Italy, and it's very affordable for what it is.
