I feel your pain. I have been hunting a very big ten point for three years now here in southern MO. He was always a ghost. Except on camera. This year 2022, the very opening day of our season, Sept 15. Just a week ago I was in a tree stand with a very crap wind but was actually trying out a piece of equipment I had bought over the summer(wild game innovation zero trace). Will long story short I had been up very late because of that opening day excitement. I actually feel asleep in my stand and woke up I don't know how long has passed but the shadows were longer so it has been a little bit. The second I woke up the first thing I seen was the exact ten point I had put so much time and effort watching and trying to figure out his patterns. He was only about ten years away from me. I tried to very quietly grab my bow. Needless to say as soon as I got my hand on it he spotted the movement. He looked straight up at me so I froze he could figure out what I was but of course took off. The sad part is he one ran out to 30 yards and turned broadside. But like you I lost my dang mind.I was shaking like a good popping peach seeds, aimed a little low preparing for the duck and yes he didn't duck, just clipped hair. I have never been as sick in my life. Anyway long story short it's great to actually watch a story of not always making the perfect shot and seeing what real hunting is, the heartache that goes along with it.... Great video and hopefully you will get on another stud. It might be hard. That was a buck of a lifetime. Thanks for the video and keep at it.

Dang man! That’s tough. Hope you get another encounter with him and an arrow in his lungs.

It wasn’t a great ending, but you did him justice with the story! Unfortunately that gut sick feeling will never go away..I shot what would have been my biggest to date 6 years ago and hit him 2inches too low. I grid searched for 4 days and never found him..The encounter pops in my head several times a year and that sickening feeling comes back every single time.

@@HeartlandBowhunter I believe I watched the video on an outdoor hunting show which included the shot that took down that buck Bovice. I have sheds of a buck that I made into a European mount. That buck gross scored in the 190's with a nice 5×5 frame. Then a few years later in December I found him dead on X-mas day. He went downhill with less width & more mass. But he had the exact brows of Bovice but the palmated brow this buck had was on the opposite side that Bovice grew his. The other brow on each buck r also a match. If your buddy wants to see it u can p.m. me & he can contact me. Congrats on Hook but marginal shots that aren't intended that way take some of the luster off the hunt👏.

I don’t know why anyone would take a shot especially with a bow at that distance and that caliber of a deer with it facing you. The size of the area in which you have to place that arrow to hit vitals is about the size of a baseball when a deer is facing you.

Poor shot selections on both misses but, easy for me to say. When you are in stand and a deer of that magnitude comes in, a whole lot of thoughts and emotions start running wild. Easy to get caught in the moment and make hasty decisions. I commend you for sharing. Some lessons in life are learned the hard way. Keep putting in the hard work and it will pay off. Thanks for sharing this cool story. Man! What a buck!

Great video! Sad ending, but at least you got to find him after his passing over to the other side. Though sad, he still left you with something in the end.

I'm born and raised in Missouri a diehard bow hunter and that made me sick2 my stomach when he found him I would almost give anything for a chance at a buck like that!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

HB remains the best hunting show. It's always shot well, edited cleanly, and it's never over the top.

He was very visible, but in a very small core area that was extremely difficult to hunt. It was a prime big buck corridor!

What a animal! Very glad you ended up finding him. I hunt upstate NY. And it’s the hard way. Gotta put n the work for the good guys... I absolutely would not argue with you about taking that shot. Not only did this animal haunt you for weeks or longer but I guarantee you learned A lot!! From the ordeal. Great buck. Good luck n the future!

Maybe you got all what you were after, a lesson and Antlers. Funny I was thinking about this same thing earlier and how we have to learn from out mistakes.

I've seen injuries the previous year (cause) non typical antler growth usually on the opposite side with the injury

I feel for you. It looked like you hit more then just leg. I personally would have waited for him to turn and present a better shot. But I wasn’t there. You were. Now my friend forgive your self and move on. It’s ok to make mistakes. The important thing is what we learn from them so we don’t repeat it again. Great story thanks. Good hunting.

Omg.. Of course he was alive, you almost shot his pecker off!!🤣🤣🤣 My heart sank after that first shot!! Then I laughed because we've all been there!! Guy can 10 ring targets all summer but when you trying to kill a mature buck were all shaky little boys!!👍

There’s no telling. An injury from a fight, another hunter, a random disease/sickness, your shot. It could have been anything. 🤷🏻‍♂️

This type of hunting is intriguing to me. I am from Nevada so for me to bow hunt deer I’m spot and stalk on the peaks of the mountains between 8,000 and 10,000 feet. It’s super hard I’ve still never shot one with a bow in 3 years of trying. Maybe one day I can do the tree stand whitetail hunt somewhere. Anyone know where would be a good place to do that?

Much respect for your high elevation hunts! We’ve done it and it’s not easy. It’s tough but so rewarding. There are many over the counter whitetail states in the Midwest. Any of these states in the Midwest are great for opportunity.

Well I'm also guilty of some sloppy shooting at times. At least you got the trophy in the end. And alot of schooling from an old buck.

Let me know Brad how the next deer with a big body handles that quartering away angle. Alot can happen @ over 25 yards. Remember this, on a quartering away angle u r counting on your arrow exiting after losing energy through the hardest part of his anatomy. With just 1 lung & no exit hole u r begging for trouble. Entrance & exit tight on both shoulders is a shot u can rely on time & time again. A close shot quartering to within 15 yards on the front of the shoulder will yield an exit tight behind the opposite shoulder which is a few inches lower than the entrance wound will kill them in seconds. The shot on hook was low which had more to do with that then the angle.

Nice buck, great story, but some things i cant wrap my brain aroud..confusing i guess is the word im looking for. Im 46, been a whitetail deer hunter since 1988 when my dad sat me under a cliff line on public land with a 30-30 and a few words before he walked away, he said "make sure of your target, make sure you see antlers, u shoot a doe, ill wrap that rifle around your neck. He meant it. He was/is, a mean man. Needless to say, i never pulled the trigger until a few years later after dad had shot a 13pt doe and came to get me to watch over the carcass to ensure noone stumbled upon this freakshow until he could get the jeep close so we could haul her out. While watching the racked doe i heard leaves behind me, spike buck, the first anters id ever saw while hunting this heavily pressured piece of public. He apparently smelled the doe and had one thing on his mind as i shot him about 8 feet from where i was seated. The rush of that has followed me until current times. At age 16 i began bowhunting, had an old truck, and had to move out from dads due to being tired of getting beat on by a drunk, i never returned home. I got a job and lived for archery season. That public land allowed a doe during archery and touching off that release on a doe was just as exhilarating as a kid shooting that spike buck. I went on to kill a few nice bucks with a bow (nothing like "Hook" ) i never heard of such a deer on my public area through the years to date. To my point (sorry) opening morning this year was this past Saturday,and after a 12 hour shift, i hit the woods at 625am only to have a doe broadside at 15 yards at 0710. I shot low, no excuse, except that i still get so excited bow hunting that a nice doe gets my adrenaline flowing, and i can't imagine the day that i would still love the sport like i do if only 180" to 210”+ is what would be needed to make me get that feeling. To this day, dad kills huge bucks every so often, and degrades me for taking a doe. Perhaps he somewhat ruined a part of hunting I’ll never know? My confusion is, the guys who MUST only shoot Booners, in this case, you had years of “history” (the chase) photos, video, lots of footage, in the end u have a story and you have in your hands “what it’s all about”…those antlers. You seemed very professional and showed remorse for a poor shot, rather than the other “pros” who act like they scored the winning touchdown in the Super Bowl when they shoot a buck, the celebration is understandable to a certain extent, but often times it’s far overshadowed by “that giant “ “that rack” and I don’t get it. This is officially the longest comment I’ve ever made, lots of useless info that someone that maybe didn’t come into hunting like me may not understand, there are some “pros” that have 8 year old daughters dropping mature bucks on private land out of a 5-7,000 dollar “shooting house” with a crossbow and the entire family in that luxurious space and the guy says “great to teach my girls about hunting”. That guy will never know “hunting”. He is teaching “shooting”. Rant over. (Great example of over celebrating? Look up Luke Bryant taking a buck here on yt, he goes full retard over a buck that’s smaller than my best bow buck off private land and probably paid 10,000 dollars to “hunt” that spot) Thanks, and sorry.

You’re right, everyone makes mistakes. Has nothing to do with pressure to kill on film. It’s called buck fever! The second we lose that adrenaline rush (that sometimes clouds our mind and judgement) will be the second we hang up the bow. It was a poor shot decision, as Shawn owned and addressed. Don’t act like you haven’t ever done the same. If you bowhunt enough, those things happen. All you can do is learn from your mistakes (and ours) and grow as a hunter. Precisely the reason behind this film and story.

@@HeartlandBowhunter granted missed shots happened but I am happy to say I haven’t tried to take any bad shot especially quartering to me. No buck is worth that. Buck fever might cause me to miss a shot but never force a bad angle.

@@HeartlandBowhunter with proper fundamentals and getting rid of that trigger release, I’d bet the adrenaline rushes wouldn’t result in bad shots. Practice good form and a surprise release and even in the highest adrenaline rush, muscle memory takes over and allows you to still execute a good shot. Drawing your bow back to your chest, lifting your anchor up to your cheek, then punching a trigger is just amateur stuff. You clearly know how to hunt, so maybe learn how to shoot now and it’ll all come together. Good luck, enjoy the process

Well maybe if it was another hunter hopefully they see this video and say yea I shot him or you know whatever. Gotta be more people in the area. Great buck. Friggin monster. If it was 12 days later after y’all shot then I wouldn’t think it was y’all that wounded him but ya never know. Animals are tough. Glad y’all found him though. Quest for him is over.

As a fellow hunter, in a way, it's good he died from something other than your arrow. As a hunter you have reaped a much larger trophy; a gift from nature.

He had the opportunities, he didn’t make good on those.

Why is Mike shooting at whitetails at 56 yards? I’m going to say Mike doesn’t care if he wounds deer. Then a frontal shot at range? You don’t care if you wound deer either. A little advice to both of you; shit can your ego competition to kill a deer before your “friend” does. Let the ethics hate begin.

Haha, no egos involved here. In fact, Shawn and I filmed each other on many of these hunts together. I’ve shot plenty of deer at that range and will continue to do so if the circumstances are right. Shawn owned being overwhelmed with the encounter and making a poor shot decision. Easy to judge in hind sight. I assure you wounding a deer is the last thing we ever want to do. Thanks for watching.

The Xero is an incredible sight honestly and had nothing to so with the shot placement.

I believe he slowly bleeding out made him traceable for the coyotes.

Yep, wouldn’t trust that sight. A range finder will pick up anything.

That was a bad decision to take that shot with the way he was quartering to you. Not to mention his front leg position.It’s hard to make those type of calls in the moment but you very easily could’ve waited for him to clear the tree limb and get in that other shooting lane where the angle of the shot would’ve been much better. Nice buck either way.

Wow. It is crazy how big antlers cause us to forget some of the fundamentals of bowhunting. Patience to wait for the best shot opportunity (broadside) and not flinging arrows out at long distances hoping for the best. After 30 yrs of bowhunting, I've realized I'd rather let them walk unscathed than take chance shots. Glad the first shot missed, would have been a back gut shot. He could have been 7-8 yrs old? Possibly just age or something else did him in. Bummer, seeing him that way. Good video!

we had him at 6.5 but definitely could have been older. You're most certainly right. It's not one of my proudest moments but the reason for showing this is because of the lessons learned and to honor the animal.

Hard to say what he died from, but I doubt the shot did it. Hard rut, hard winter, bad gun shot, there is not telling but good to see there is some closure to the story.

Some of us only get to "hunt" not go after one buck for several years on private property. We enjoy small 8 points like the big deer y'all hunt and kill. Great deer though

Extremely poor shot selection. No video or FB post would ever be worth it to me making one of my targets suffer like that. I have too much respect for them. Atleast you had the nads to post it on here. Just hope next time you hold out for a better shot or let him walk.

Wtf are you doing shooting 56 yards at deer

Love your guys videos/hunts but 56yds with rainy weather and bulky clothing...come on now? Not hunting elk here fellas! How many times did you practice that shot in rainy weather, bulky clothes and heavy breathing lol? I'm gonna say zero times? Most all of us are pretty good in shorts and t-shirt, beautiful sunny days shooting our targets in the back yard, sipping on a cold drink, BSing with our buddies but...at least you didn't gut him.

You fed a deer it's whole life, made it dependent on your food and sat in a heated hut with snacks and Instagram until the deer came out and ambushed it. Cool story

That was part of the purpose of showing this video. Mistakes are made. That’s how we grow. We are human.

This is why hunters get a bad name. Shooting at a deer at 56 yards and another time quartering to you is a very bad idea in the 1st place. Greed is a killer to humans and you wanted that deer so bad to risk a crap shot.

Why didn't you wait to shoot him quartering away through the hole to your left? Rushing the shot so it's on camera? Probably died due to infection especially when there's a leg wound..... Work on your game

My wind had switched to that shooting lane and I was worried he would get my wind. This was a mistake I’m not proud of but learned from. I’m human and just wanted to show story of a magnificent animal. It wasn’t the ending I wanted.

Should’ve been practicing and why would you hold low at 20 yards if he didn’t duck down the first time you shot at him, some very poor decisions was made in the making of the video

Why on God's green earth would you take a 56 yard shot? Not impressed in the least. Not only was your shot low is was far back. Not very ethical.

100% agree if you miss by that far at 56 yards , probably shouldn't be taking 56 yard shots. Anyone can miss, but knowing your limits is very important just throwing hail merries at them is not ethical.

Firstly... I'm not going to judge. I know how being in the presence of a Missouri Ozarks Monarch can affect one. Rapid heart rate, have to remember to breathe. Tunnel vision. Adrenaline rush hitting you hard. It's quite understandable how a guy who can and has made 60+yd shots before, blows it against something like "Hook". Y'all seem to forget he choked the 20yd shot too. Give the kid a break. We got more like "Hook" here... I've seen one even bigger from a stand.
