I Own all his books and videos . I never had a hunter “ mentor “ no one in my family hunts . I was completely clueless and frustrated until I found this guy .. His books and videos shaves decades off a otherwise frustration early career.. always thankful to you John . Truly, truly thankful..

He always mentions Michigan because it's probably the toughest state in the country to tag a mature buck on public land. It's a totally different ball game than hunting in other Midwestern states

Statistics are statistics. Iowa has 1.07 bowhunters per absolute square mile and every year 1 out of every 329 bowhunters actually enters a buck in the P&Y book and the average score is 15 inches higher that bucks entered from pressured states like Mi., Pa., W. Va.. Michigan has 7.68 bowhunters per absolute square mile and 1 out of every 4,305 bowhunters every year enters a buck in the P&Y book. Ks. has .55 hunters per absolute square mile and every year 1 out of every 240 bowhunters actually enters a buck in the P&Y book and they also average 15 inches higher than Mi., Pa., W.Va. etc. Those are stats that can't be refuted and because Iowa and Ks average over 145 inches per P&Y entry it only makes sense that many bowhunters that kill 125 to 135 inchers don't even enter them because it's not a big deal to kill them each year. The Michigan average entry is under 130 inches. Wisconsin is another big buck state and Wisconsin enters more P&Y bucks every year that any other state.

Hey John it's Kevin here.wanted to let you know that me and my son both shot 8 points this year and we both filled doe tags.i saw 31 different Buck this past archery season of which 4 were really good bucks.all of the buck sightings were right after a Cold front came through.im still using the tactics that I learned from your books that I bought and I passed those on to my son who really improved his bowhunting success.he went out by himself this year bowhunting and now he's pretty much self sufficient and wants to do it by himself now.thanks again for your help in regards to bowhunting pressured bucks.my success has skyrocketed.have a good Thanksgiving and a merry Christmas and a happy new year

I never thought of thinking of that mindset. The last 15 years I hunted land that no one hunted within the woods. I never saw anyone who walked in the woods.I would hear shots from the fringes of the woods in the crop field. By hunting in the woods it has afforded me to hone my walk in and out "quietly". Sad this year the landowner logged his woods this year. 🙁🙁

I'm right with you John, I've been washing and storing my backpack in an air tight container for the last 30 years ! I don't pay attention to any T.V or You-tube hunting celebrities . The only person I listen to and have gained a tremendous amount of knowledge from is you. Thanks for sharing it with us.

Nailed it on the head. He's extremely particular and tags record book bucks. A lot to learn from him, regardless of any personal tactics!

I just watched another video from deer hunting magazine... John has hunted 53 season and has harvested 50 P&Y class whitetails official in record books... he may be hard to take because he is very matter of fact in his opinion. I have spoken with him he has always been friendly and I have never thought of him as arrogant. Confident in his skills and knowledge based on the results of his tactics absolutely.

Best Hunting Advice Vidio ever, and I watch about 50 every day, at this time of the year(broadheads, accuracy, mock scrapes...)! I have to ground hunt these days, so the best advice he gave, which I totally agree with, is a Face Netting. I stalked a BIG doe for an hour last year(the wind was in my face too); I had seen her on the horizon, when I left my car; when I got to 20 yards of her, some deer ran, but she just stared at me, wasn’t sure what I was! 20 yard pass-through! 2 days later, I was walking back to my car, 10 mins of legal shooting left, again, down wind, stopped at old railroad tracks, a 10 Pt. walked right toward me, stopped about 18 yds, looked at me, again, wasn’t sure what I was, and I got my 1st 10 point! Due to face mask+ being down wind. And, this is in Heavy Pressured SE Pa.

This is the guy new or beginning hunters should listen to.he is the real deal.very down to earth & very smart when it comes to deer hunting.

Thanks for sharing your insight on all your years of hunting. I'm really trying to take it to the next level, i appreciate it.

I have a suggestion for the interviewer. When a man with this much knowledge offers to show you his personalized saddle, then please take the time to look at it and share with us. Although I enjoyed every moment of the interview, I felt like I missed a great opportunity to learn more info from a great hunter.

Absolutely phenomenal interview. I learned quite a bit from this video. Thinking about buying his new signature saddle from Tethrd, the ESS.

I do respect this mans whitetail knowledge and find much of it useful knowledge to use in the woods no matter the state you hunt in.

This guy is straight up no nonsense, he's confident in his approach and very educated.

Knowledge for anyone who wants to open there minds....man has a gameplan an it works..lots to learn know matter how long anyone has hunted

A lot of what he does is my game plan also. I used to be fanatical about scent and it got to the point that all the work was taking the fun out of it. I still bathe in sports wash body soap , keep my camo clean and stored until I go in the woods and watch the wind religiously . I see as many deer as I ever have. Hats off to the fella for going all in though!

I've shot deer in PA that survived being hit by automobile, and shot by bow. Thanks for the great information.

I love this video! My only concern is finding public hunting land that is remote enough not to have other hunters in it. We have a couple large River islands that I’ve thought about trying, but I’ve seen boats on them during deer season. Thank you sir for passing on your experience!

Put on the walking boots, i have to walk almost a mile to my stand with no trail just to not see other people. I pack in all my warm clothes.

The interviewer understands exactly who he is sitting with. This guy is the Ted Williams of deer hunting in Michigan and pulls it off every year. Ted Williams was confident and didn't have time for small talk. Dean Potter did not have time for small talk. I wish folks wouldn't judge. Ego stops folks from listening and learning and producing. This isn't arrogance it's concentration and intensity with a discipline (understanding the steps required to succeed) that few can match.

People who are the top in their field are often judged as being opinionated and arrogant. The truth is that they are driven and dedicated enough to do things that 99% of the population will not do. That drive and dedication gives them an edge. His proof is on his wall and in the Pope and Young record books.

I'm in my 60's from the central Michigan area I know as a fact that in the 60's through the early 80 's John Eberhard was one of the biggest tresspasser and poacher in the area ,his one son and ex wife to my best friend about his poaching and poaching ,he was caught by a rancher ,that caught him laying in a ditch with a rifle during bow season and his ex used to drop him off to hunt where he didn't have permission .I personally believe that's why he went to hunt out of a sling ,harder that a lock on to notice ,and a lot more ,I think he's probably legit now ,but it drives me nuts when he says he knows the real story of what really happened to like Rompola and others

I watched this whole interview after just have gotten into deer hunting and I have to say. I learned a lot and it made me excited to join the hunt. Awesome job and great detail giving John. I would like to ask a question to @eberhart outdoors. Do you typically see fewer deer but bigger deer or many deer with bigger deer? And are you hunting specific bucks that you or someone else has seen or are you hunting percentage areas that you would believe hold big bucks. All questions pertain to pressured public land.

Even if you don’t do the scent lock stuff, JE is an incredible hunter who can teach us all. Remember F collars they suck.

I do very similar than he does... prep in early spring(Feb-March_April), hunt early Oct, 1st week, then only once or twice till the rut starts.... starting right before Halloween is my first vacation ...

I love his honesty about television hunters. It's nothing but marketing bullshit

Made the jump last year 2 deer kills one in rifle and one in bow. I did setup practices during spring and summer, but I live in the suburbs and did not really know of a place to setup and shoot that would not scare neighbors . I have a local spot for test hunts. It’s close to home, has deer movement but there not pressured and really don’t seem to be bothered by hunters so it’s a good warm up. Anyway my first hunt I did not really understand shooting the bow out of it once I got the chance like I visualize. I started setting up on a telephone poll that sits at the edge of my property line and set my target up a different ranges where I usually shoot in the yard. Few times and I understood and next sit took a doe at 25. Overall safest I have ever felt and really comfortable

Best purchase I ever made hunting

It made a ton of sense about deer needing security cover to travel. A turkey is the same way alot of times it's hard to call one across 300yds of open timber. It can be done if he's hot enough but he's gonna be on alert

I’ve started throwing lit fire crackers out my tree once every 1/2 hour as well as thoroughly dowsing myself an old spice just so I don’t have to feel so guilty about deer hunting in Iowa.

Great interview with a lot of good info. He's very meticulous with what he does hence his success. Anyone can kill a big buck on private property with little pressure, but it takes a different attitude and approach to consistently kill record bucks on heavily pressured public land like Michigan and Pennsylvania. John just does things differently and pays attention to the smallest details that many guys overlook.

In my neck of the woods, if someone shows you a big buck taken during archery season, you can bet the following is true: 1. it was on a relatively large piece of private land with enforced borders, 2. they were feeding with corn and using trail cameras, and 3. they were using a crossbow.

It takes time dedication and consistency to create and maintain a high quality habitat on a piece of property and maintain low pressure to establish older class animals. Land mangers give back to the enviroment 95% of the time spent on property is habitat management and 5% is actual hunting. You pay $40 to your dnr and go out to the woods to take from it what have you given back?

@@thetrooper1061 so not true. That's the exception not the rule. Many people I know who owns or leases property does very little to it. Many just set out bait piles or feeders and the few that do food plots do nothing after spreading out the seed. Most have exclusive rights to the property so they shoot big bucks every year. It's just that easy. No hunting pressure means bucks get to grow old. It's not rocket science.

Believe it or not answered all of my hunting pressured problems , Western Indiana I also love hunting bad weather but I'm handicap and must hunt ground blind or just ground any suggestions it sounds like bedding area's but not possible with my bum leg.

Thank you for sharing. It's good stuff for those who are open to listening. If viewers can set aside their own preconceptions and be open to hearing what a proven successful hunter has to share, there is surely beneficial information here. I can understand how some things early in this video could be taking one way or the other. Again, one's ability to be open-minded can be a virtue. But like many other things in life, if someone only wants to make their own judgement on something and voice their own condescending view of another person...ect...I personally just have a hard time understanding what is to gain or what good comes out of that. I'm afraid this equation is all to common and it can be a restrictive barrier for learning and improving and even can become destructive if we're not careful. I wish our species could become more like a mature buck picking up on that sort of scent, learn to avoid it, outsmart it and live on as a stronger wiser specimen. In all honesty, early in this video, I wasn't sure how to take the man being interviewed either. I was asking myself if he just wanted to make a point that he hunts smarter than other people. But keeping an open mind and actually being able to listen and get more of the bigger picture, I found it totally worth while. He offers so many tips for us. Consider that he doesn't even have to agree to doing the interview at all. That alone speaks to a more selfless aspect of his character and I very much appreciate when experts are willing to share their knowledge and experience! Love hearing hunting stories! Ever since being a little kid at the men's deer camp. Much gratitude. Thanks again and good luck out there bowhunters!

John Eberhart is one of the best. I met him once stand in that 5 minute conversation he taught me the secret to success. I then went on to get my first buck in Pope and Young the very next day. His videos and books are worth the money!

Nailed it when he said there's no state like Michigan but maybe in the northeast. All the TV guys and KZread guys Come try out Vermont, New Hampshire, or Maine and see how much you know

Even NY. Adirondack deer are tough. Public land deer here look up into trees and know what a shooting lane is. There are huge bucks to take here but it takes serious people to get them. Most places with lots of deer have orange in every tree on opening day lol. Every honeyhole I know is DEEP.

This guy has a lot of really good information that he's being real transparent with. If you can't learn from something this man said about hunting there's something wrong with you LOL

Some of yal are defending him saying he is NOT arrogant because you have watched him before or met him personally and he is a good guy. That's great. But don't get mad at people on here calling him a douche or arrogant because in THIS video he does give off that impression with his posture, tone, and honestly some of the way he attacks other hunters. If you get mad at this comment you are just unreasonable. Also, I don't believe his scent lock suits are what is helping him not get winded for 3 reasons. 1: He is so high in the tree at 30 feet that his wind is going over deer and on hunts before 2pm the thermals are carrying it up. 2: He has so many spots picked out that he hardly hunts the same stand twice so deer aren't on to him. 3: I think it's odd to say you have never been winded when in the timber you can't see all that far. Who's to say a deer didn't smell you from 400 yards away......... it's definitely possible. He for sure is a great hunter. That's all.

I try to take interviews from everyone if I have the time and Chad does an extremely good interview. I do use cameras out of state, just not in Michigan. I think the first filmed podcast I did with Chad in 2017 was one of the best as it had a ton of good info in it and Chad had no issues with me not using camera's. It's about helping others become more detail oriented and hopefully more successful. John

I hope this comment gets back to John... if someone doesn't think scent control is a big deal I have a couple examples for them. Backcountry Elk hunting may not allow you to wash your clothes or yourself as you should. Spend a few days up there sweating up mountains and then go into town for a shower and laundry. Step out of the shower and sniff the clothes you were just wearing... WOW! Talk about stink! Also, I love scentlok... and Dead Downwind products because they work. I just did a test in my backyard garden while picking my squash. Within 10 seconds I had 30 mosquitos biting me even after I just showered. I had to leave ASAP... so I found my Dead Downwind spray and used it. I then went back to the garden in a tank top and shorts and finished picking my squash for 30 minutes and I never saw even one mosquito. I think it proves a point about these products! Please leave a comment.

Great hunter love the video. Would be curious to see his scent free tactics against a police dogs nose. Field and stream has done this test against other hunters tactics and the hunters almost always lose except tracking in very dry conditions. Detecting hunter via wind hunters always lose. Chad, you don’t listen and don’t understand. Eberhart never says you can beat a tracking dog or 100% eliminate human scent. What he is say is this: You can reduce your scent to the point that it does not alarm deer. There is human scent around everywhere. The deer know if its very close, or very recent. Eberhart claims you can reduce your scent to the level of “not near” and “not recent”. GOT IT?

Hey John! I have a question for you if you could possibly find the time to answer.

I hunt in Michigan and have to disagree with a few things stated here but respect his opinion. Is is still useful and helping to learn something from someone else, even if you dont agree with what was said.

It's so nice to hear someone so realistic. People have been killing buck and deer in generally successfully forever. It's really the past 20 year where theres been so much competition for hunter dollars. No one watches reality shows or sitcoms or listens to celebrity interviews and compares it to their lives. 90% of the professional hunters are the same. They're pushing sponsors, they need viewers and fresh exciting content. The tell you, you need the best camo, stands, scents, cameras, calls, detergent. They never mention that they're 4 5000 acre farms or ability to plant food plots and manage the property to grow and keep the deer have anything to do w success.

I noticed you have steps around the tree to stand on that look like they are on a belt. What kind exactly are they & where can you get them

check out wild edge steps. dont know if that's what he uses but a lot of saddle hunter use them.

He said he only uses spikes or screw in steps. How does he get up the tree on public land?

Wow he has a ton of information. It would be nice to utilize some of his tips and also put a couple apple trees in the transition area between the main food source and bedding to keep them protected from drive bye hunters a bit more. I hate to admit I don't use any scent control and also my best bucks were when I woke up from asleep sitting on a chair out in the woods or just walking in for an evening hunt the one time and there he was squaring off to fight another buck.

Any info on black tail in Oregon iv hunted them rifle for years and can only kill one once there rutting besides that u don’t see them only does

I’ve got a question. Maybe I missed it, but does he wash his saddle and ropes in scent free detergent and store them in air tight containers as well? I’ve got to assume that a saddle has as much scent on it as a backpack or Fanny pack. How does he deal with his saddle’s scent?

His KZread channel has a ton of videos where he covers everything he does. I know he stores it but can’t remember what he said about washing..I know it’s mentioned though

So what do you do to hunt a swamp that has no good hangable trees, or so thick that you can't hunt the ground? That is what the swamps are like where I hunt in MI

Didn't watch it but didn't he mention it's easier to trespass, shoot them at night or in places you're not allowed to hunt?

I'm on his side with "naming" deer.

@@toms7947 I felt the same way about naming deer. Then when we finally got a solid property to manage, it just became much easier when delineating between bucks.

Hard to argue with this guy's resume!

He was just wrong about bedding, other than that pretty solid and right can’t argue with what he has killed, but he does kinda come off a little arrogant

l will hunt beds thanks to john try to clean up more like him 3 big bucks out the same stand 3 years in a row trying a saddle

I would like to see John come to central PA and hunt big bucks on state ground.

He could do it easily. Michigan and PA are very similar. However, Michigan has many many more hunters and therefore has higher pressure. John hunts more in central michigan than northern michigan which I have made the argument is harder to hunt the further north you go here. The argument could be made that John Eberhart is the greatest whitetail deer hunter of all time. Its almost impossible to find 3 year old bucks here. And no, its definitely not easier to kill a big buck here than in PA.
