The reason we don't have more than 5 percent of the population in Sweden driving a pure EV is simple, it's still fantasy high prices. You could purchase a Suzuki Ignis here, brand new for like 14-18K usd, take it and drive 600 km. But the absolutely cheapest EV here has an range of 200 Km in the summer and cost almost 3 times as much. Top that up with slow charging and 1000 different charge-station owners that all want to cover their own base with prices often topping that of its Ice counterparts, like gasoline - and you have a no-go. I just don't see it happen.

It will have to compete (in France) with cars that can benefit from 4k to 7k of cost reduction. So it might work if it's 7k cheaper than a EU built car (eC3 at 23k euros, R5 expected around 25k, ...).

That's wrong. Dacia spring >14k € but it is a very bad car. Tariffs do not protect Germany, on the contrary, it is another means of destroying this country. The sales market in the Asian region is now more important and tariffs would be counterproductive for the automotive industry

If it comes to the UK (not confirmed), it needs to be £15k like the entry level Dacia Spring. At that price, it will be a far better car for the same price and might get some traction. If it’s 318k to £20k in the UK I still think it’s going to struggle as there will be cars like the Citroen E-C3 and Renault 5 to compete against.

Dacia Spring is 20k euro. I think the whole EU must follow the France's example and calculate the CO2 emitted during the whole production and transportation process. This is the reason for which Model 3 don't receive incentives in France and the reason for which Renault 5's supply chain is on a 300 km radius. Plus I will add the pollution with SO2 and NO2.

I just wish the UK would convert to driving on the right...! Why we stubbornly stick to our antiquated right-hand-drive cars is beyond me... Sweden did it (apparently, overnight...!!) back in the late 60s, so there's a president for being able to do it. Then, at least, we could start to enjoy cheaper and a wider variety of cars built for the wider global car markets.

Ridiculous argument, and the majority of the population is right handed so there's an actual reason for it. Also, we have some of the safest roads in the world thanks. No changes required. 25% of the world's population and growing is RHD. Sweden has hardly any population, less then and even fewer cars and it did not go well btw.

Yes, it's cheaper so it's better. That's the point of cheaper products. They're cheaper. We buy them because they cost less. That often means they don't taste quite as good, or aren't as large, or don't have as many features. But they generally do the job you actually need.

Europeans should learn from Asean. The buyers here don't pay overpriced and overhyped Europeans evs because most can't afford to. Chinese evs absolutely dominate the market because they are affordable and reliable. They know Chinese batteries are used by non Chinese automakers like Tesla because they are the safest ones around. They also know many Byd and NIO ev models have 5 star safety rating. EU is worried about their evs coming into Europe for a good reason. The only weapon they have is by imposing more tariffs to protect their own brands from being demolished.

I know some will say that without tariffs local car manufacturing would disappear along with those jobs. But as a consumer, it's not my problem. That's the govt's responsibility to ensure these people are employed. I just want a safe car at a reasonable price.
