Una banda muy infravalorada. Para mí es una banda extraordinaria.

I also found out about them in the late 80s from a customer at a record store at which I worked. I bought the 2 CD set in Philly and loved them ever since. The ironic band name was taken from a supermarket chain in the Memphis area. Good stuff. Your ending comments reminded me of "Nothing Can Hurt Me". They've got to be the least commercially successful band ever to have a documentary, lol.

I've been a Big Star fan since the late 80s when I was in college. I think a lot of their songs have a simple but not simplistic feel and the lyrics come across as emotionally honest -- since I'm not them, I can't say for sure that they are, but they definitely seem that way. Also, I think that Chris Bell was a Christian, but most of their songs don't reflect that. Some songs reflect struggling with depresssion -- a song called Big Black Car comes to mind. Besides the songs that people typically recommend, I like My Life Is Right and Daisy Glaze. There's a box set (CDs!) that has almost all their songs, plus a few alterate versions or alternate lyrics and a couple from an early period when they recorded under a couple of different band names. and a booklet with photos, notes, etc. It came out -- just guessing -- around 2007 or 2008. It's called Keep an Eye on the Sky -- which is a lyric in their song Stroke It Noel, if I recall correctly. Enjoy getting to hear some of their music for the first time :)

Before Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, REM and so many other great bands like them, there was Big Star.

Very nice. I had heard of them, but I don't think I have heard them.

Jon and Andy: this popped into my feed today. Not sure why I messed it last year. Great song from such an influential band. This song has a clear tie to the sound of The Jayhawks.

I think Alex Chilton was lead singer on this (maybe not). Chilton sang a #1 hit as a teen. The Letter, with The Boxtops. Both bands were based in Memphis

But Big Star lacked any understanding from Columbia Records (thanks for that background). Whereas the Boxtops were fortunate to appear during a great rock Explosion (late 60s)

Yup, co lead singer with Chris Bell. Chris was the guy who started the band, and kind of had the entire impetus behind the sound. He left after the first album, but they had several of his songs on the second album, Radio City. His solo record was recorded with Geoff Emmerick at Abbey Road, and the single I Am the Cosmos is maybe the best thing anyone in the band ever did

Big Star is a sadly ironic name. So is the United States
