Big speckled trout and more close to Mississippi River!

Спорт

It's a break in the Mississippi River that's been wide open for almost a decade, and it's still more controversial than figuring the best methods to combat the coronavirus. Some anglers love Mardi Gras Pass, and see its value to the ecosystem as a whole, but others simply despise it.
Those in the latter group feel Mardi Gras Pass has displaced fish, silted in deep-water bayous and canals and negatively impacted water clarity, and all that is true. But does that mean the crevasse's negatives outweigh its positives?
To find out, my longtime fishing buddy, Chris Macaluso, and I made a trip this week down to Beshel's Marina on the east bank of Plaquemines Parish near Pointe a la Hache. The marina's backdown ramp is just a short hop from Mardi Gras Pass, and the whole region it provides access to is heavily influenced by the infusion of fresh water, particularly now with the river at its highest levels of the year.
When we arrived, we found the Back Levee Canal, which passes in front of the marina, to be a corridor of fresh, muddy water, but we didn't have to travel far at all before we located water that was crystal clear with a beautiful greenish tint.
The fresh water from Mardi Gras Pass has fueled a boom of aquatic vegetation in the area that filters out sediment and leaves water that almost looks suitable for drinking. What we also discovered is that water is also LOADED with fish.

Is there decent fishing within kayak range (3-4 miles) from the launch down there or do you have to run out a long ways?

If your range is four miles, you should definitely be able to find some fish. I wouldn't recommend looking until you're at least two miles out, however. Good luck!

Heres a challenge idea. Buy one of those $40 Shakespeare inshore catch more fish combo packs per person, and use only whats in the pack. See who catches more fish. If you want to add, say, $50 including tax total for any tack on tackle, that could make sense. But I'd be really curious to see how yall did with one of those alone. www.academy.com/shop/pdp/shakespeare-catch-more-fish-inshore-7-ft-m-spinning-rod-and-reel-combo

I’m one of the ones that you not going to convince me Mardi Gras pass is a good thing. I just know how good the fishing was in point a la hache before the break in the levee.

I could name a bunch of areas that have seen profound fisheries declines due to unabated marsh loss, and there's not a crevasse or diversion for miles around. Fishing at Pointe a la Hache is a lot different than it used to be, but at least it's brimming with life. Those other areas are vast wastelands. Thanks for the feedback. This is obviously a critical topic for our coast.

Marsh Man Masson I see it’s not going to do me any good complaining about it. No doubt it helps bass and redfish but let’s face it we can catch all we want in the Slidell area. I just can’t drive down there to fish for bass and reds. But anyway good talking to you about it we will be in Delacroix in the morning looking for Speckled trout.

Did I hear C-Mach correctly, did the River punch through the levee, Mardi Gras? I see the benefits of the water dumping into the areas. People don’t realize that without any freshwater infiltration to the area, the vegetation will continue to erode away, the influxes of the saltwater just keeps killing off the root systems ergo lost of soil attached to the rest of the dominoes. It would be equivalent to try to grow your lawn using saltwater, it’ll just die off continuously then the soil will wash away, it’s the same principle in the marshes. Yes, the closeness and ease of making a living off oysters and shrimp year round in the area has been effected, but that was only due to the design of the diverting the natural flow of things to begin with, like the MRGO and levee systems that were introduced decades ago. We are losing too much marsh land on an annual basis and by the time the 2 generations come along, there would be NO marsh left for anything to grow and prosper for them to enjoy the same fishery as we do today. If you look at the OLD photos of the areas before all the changes or right around the time the changes took place, you can see clearly in the photos that the marshes were full of wildlife and plenty of grasses and large trees. That’s why there are names like Oak River, Cedar Point, Stump Lagoon, Pointe Aux Chenes and so on, it was bc of the influx of the freshwater at the time and we still had a GREAT fishery with PLENTY of shrimp, oysters, clams, crabs and fish! You as a commercial fisherman just needed to travel a little to get to the areas that were productive for what you were catching in that season of the year! Looking back, Blacky’s was known for clams and Cane POLE fishing, can you imagine that, hooking big croakers, reds, black drum, speckled trout and catfish on cane poles and just slinging them into the boat! There were no ice chest back then either, you just knew what to do to keep things from spoiling before getting your catch back. I believe there was an old hotel out toward Shel Beech area and Grand Isle. I’m not totally sure of the history, but I do recall seeing the older photos when I was young and some of the stories that went along with them.
