    He stated that he got the engine for Powertrain out of Dallas. I looked into an engine for my 04 F150. Short Block $3200 (not a bad price). I would guess that he probably dropped around $6000 (not counting his own time since he owns the shop). $6000 + $2000 for the vehicle = $8000. Now the vehicle is basically new and can be ran for another 200,000 miles.

The 02's 03's and 04's all had different sounding exhausts. I picked the 02 with the big Goodyear tires. Electric shift 4WD. Couldn't get that thing stuck in big snow drifts in the forest out at UBC in Vancouver. Colour was Arizona Beige which was the best of all the browns. Had the big Triton V8.

    I enjoyed seeing what you needed to do to make this truck reliable, and the care you used in working on it and deciding on the improvements you wanted to make, like the MagnaFllow exhaust system, but it would have been much more useful and interesting to me if you had stated at the beginning of your discussion , or in the title, the model year of this F150, and any particulars about this particular model (The FX4 designation can mean that different things are or are not in the package, depending on the model year); knowing such things as mileage, bed length, transmission, 2wd vs. 4wd, (didn't know it was 4wd until I saw the transfer case) limited slip differential (electronic vs. mechanical, part of FX4 package?), Bilsteins, seating capacity (looks like it has a back seat, but hard to be sure), amenities like heated & cooled seats or navigation, etc. would help us out and make the story more interesting. You have an encyclopedic knowledge of Ford and Lincoln trucks, and of F-150's in particular, but some of us don't have your range of knowledge, and we're playing catch-up trying to figure out some of this stuff. My F150 is over 20 years old, and compared to it, your new shop truck is at least a generation ahead technologically and looks like it is practically brand new. The reason this truck is interesting to me, as a viewer, is finding out what was it about this specific truck which made it worth investing quite a lot of money, time and expertise in to make it the perfect shop truck for a Ford truck expert? And to appreciate that decision, I would have liked to have known from the outset of this video the details and strong points about the truck you started with, besides the fact that it was very clean but with a ruined motor. Thanks for the video.

    I had a rusty u joint and the guy at the Ford dealer told me it was my power steering pump. I went online and found it was a rusty u joint. I taped a small paint brush on a stick and put grease on the brush and coated the u joint. That was 10 years ago still working good. I have all the frame issues you pointed out on my 04 F150.

    Cheap vehicles have always been my best ones. I purchased a Corolla with a blown motor from a customer for $150 way back in 2000. Built the engine for about $700 and other than regular maintenance it’s been 💯. Daughter went through college on it and I still kick it when I need it.

    Looks great Brian! Exactly what I dream of doing (or maybe paying you to do some day if I win the lottery) to my '08. Despite all the frustration of this generation, I still think it's one of the best looking trucks on the road and basically does everything the same as a current day truck that would run me $50K.

    In my opinion that's the best way to go. Amazing that did not rust. I was thinking rust prevention then you said it.. that will probably outlast the majority of brand new ones with your care.

    Very smart businessman - didn't go plunk down 50 or 60 grand (or even 20 or 30) on a shop truck. Gets a nice clean one for 2k and then a little more for a new engine. You sir are financially smarter than 90% of people out there...

    I have a 2009 F150 4.6l. I put a remanufactured transmission in at 433,000 and a remanufactured motor at 455,000. The transmission finally failed but the motor was still going however with plenty of oil consumption of course. Two new cat converters. 458,000 at this time. Knock on wood. I hope my next Ford pickup is a plugin electric.

    Yeah, it's worth it, gorgeous truck. I remember being at a Mich. Ford dealer in November 2003. Seeing all those NEW trucks on the lot. Just had a bad feeling about buying a 1st year redesign. Glad I went with the deal on my '03 F-150 5.4 2v. Caught a little rust on the rocker area in time, call it ventilation holes, to spray in Kroil, then Corrosion X. Still going strong on Amsoil 5w-30 not that CAFE mandated crap 5w-20. Keep up the great work

    David Mandziuk can you explain why you use 5W-30, and not factory spec of 5W-20? I know Brian said to use it once, but for years, he CANT/WONT explain why. Do you know why?

  • @davidmandziuk8493

    @davidmandziuk8493

    @@garrettstevensen2467 5W-20 is Ford's , and every other manufacturers creation, to squeeze out a little more gas mileage, at the expense of accelerated engine wear. . I've talked to many engine builders , and they all recommend 5W-30 over 5W-20. People are complaining about supposed excessive oil consumption in the newer F-150s....It's not that these engines are burning more than usual oil, but something the Noack volatility index. That's the test to determine excessive oil EVAPORATION. Yeah check it out, the oil is now so thin in viscosity, it is evaporating at an excellerated rate. Case in point, these oil catch cans people are mounting by their PCV system. The oil is now evaporating faster and winding up in the intake tract. 5W-30 is a lot more stable. , It doesn't have that issue. A lot of Ford Engineers are also recommending using 5W-30 on a lot of sites.. same thing with the axle fluid rating for the newer F-150. It specs. for a 75w-85 gear oil in the rear axle. No change in machining tolerances, yet all of a sudden they go to a thinner oil?...all in the name of advertising maybe 1 mpg. better fuel economy. I use Amsoil 75w-140 rear axle....front 75w110 Ford doesn't want these trucks to last forever, they want you back in the showroom in a few years. GM invented the term "Engineered Obsolescence, fancy way of making vehicles that barely will last the warranty. "Lifetime transmission fluid". Who's lifetime..?? Good luck
