Awesome catch! Crazy the ship grounded just 3 days later, the Barker is still anchored on the Detroit River while the crew inspects for any damage. Hope to see the ship sailing soon.

The Mark W. Barker is the newest freighter on the Great Lakes, launched just last year. She’s specifically designed to navigate the Cuyahoga without the aid of tugs or other assistance. Very unique lake boat for sure 👍

The men and women navigating lake vessels are the best sailors in the world. They put any salt water mariners to shame. 3 long, 2 short to you, MARK W. BARKER.

I would like to see anyone think they could do better. These ship captains know what they are doing!

With their bow and stern thrusters, these monsters can turn on a proverbial dime. Thanks for the up close and personal video. It would have been nice if you had shown that turn.

In a pinch, mixed cargo. This is what they designed her for.

That was a lot more interesting before bow and stern thrusters became a thing. The days when Captains and Mates knew how long their ship would take to respond to rudder and engine orders and judging the distance and estimating the speed by how quickly objects go by. Radar isn't operating because way too many tall buildings to block the sweep. And at this point they are not likely to not see anything else on the river.

Limestone is an essential ingredient of Portland Cement which is an essential ingredient of building concrete used to build... well... just about everything.

This isn’t even close to being as long as some of the others in the fleet, but still massive

The Edmund Fitzgerald was almost a hundred feet longer and may have navigated the same river.

Why don't Lakers have sharp ship's prows?

They don't need to "cut" through the water like ocean vessels. Not riding out storms, huge waves, nor the need to make 26kts. Sharp bows waste space, curved bows can hold product, fuel, or whatever customer designs it for, but the space doesn't go to waste. A number of GL boats used to be ocean faring at one time, but had bows cur off and replaced when converted to lake use.
