When the storm manager called the adjuster and spoke to him, saying, "If you are using drones for damage assessment, then we can't deny claims", and the adjuster asks, "Why would we want to deny claims"? and the storm manager hangs up on him, that is the same as saying, if you continue to use drones, then this insurance company will discontinue to employ your services as an adjuster in the future. Sadly, they will be punished for speaking out, so remember them. Heck, if you are in a position to do so, offer them a job. I know of no business that couldn’t use another smart, honest man. These are the people, often nameless, rarely acknowledged, that hold our society together. They force dishonest people to worry that fraud will be caught. Their sacrifices make all our lives better. We should all aspire to such strength of character, and we should all work to make our world a place where all people like these are rewarded for their actions.

Everyone is scared to go up against a giant like the insurance companies. Good adjusters are trained to detect fraud, regardless of where it comes from and if they find it’s happening on the carrier side or the policyholder side and fail to report it, then they would be an accessory to the fraud, if a legal matter was to come up and the claim be investigated. The estimated amount of fraud committed by just one insurance company just for Hurricane Ian is around 26 billion dollars. This is why you see so many homes still showing damage with no hope of getting enough money for the repairs. We definitely need to support these whistleblowers anyway we can.

I feel like the US gets the worst of it. There's so much uncertainty. There are so many things that can happen and just absolutely ruin somebody who's got their shit together, it's scary. Great video, Josh, thanks. I think ethics v. corruption is the core of a functioning society. I'm ethical because being evil makes my hips look too big. We need reliable systems, accountable /transparent representation and checks and balances. That's what makes a decent world and, spoiler alert, that's also better for business in the long run

Personal experience: paid for homeowners insurance for over 25 years for my house and outbuildings. Agent assured me it was all covered. Someone broke in to shop building and stole tools. Insurance company refused to payout because " out buildings arent covered", and " we aren't responsible for what the agent says." Then the next years premium rate was doubled. I found another insurance company that had a lower premium than i was originally paying.

What's going on here in Florida with insurance companies demanding new roofs be put on your home or they'll drop your coverage. We and 4 other families in the neighborhood had the insurance companies tell us we had 90 days to get completely new roofs even though their insurance inspector passed our roofs. We had to put out $17,000 cash for our roof. We have a great house in a wonderful neighborhood. Our houses are not falling apart. Were on the Treasure Coast.

I'm from Florida and I just canceled my homeowner's insurance once it reached over $11,000 a year. Now I'm starting from scratch to self-insure since I own my own house. The decision became easy after observing the red flags with people that I know have insurance and didn't get their full payouts. There was always an excuse. If anything ever happens to my house is my backup insurance policy. I built a tiny house. It's the best I can do at this point. Very helpful video series.

I'm 74. There is nothing new about any of the collusion between government and insurance companies. Auto insurance is mandatory in most states if not all. Traffic violations such as speeding where you get assessed points works in the favor of insurance companies who routinely charge more for auto insurance where you have points on your driver's record. Now on the surface that seems reasonable. However, speed traps set up at the bottom of a hill where drivers naturally go faster allows states to charge drivers for a ticket and insurers get to raise you rates. Use of aerial and ground (vascar) where the distance between 2 lines is timed (this is done from the air probably using drones) allows states to increase tickets/points/insurance rates. And you as a driver have no way to challenge these. If someone says you are guilty, you are ticketed. That leaves a lot of discretion to those who are conducting the equipment. And it makes drivers unable to contest such. In one state back in the '70's the governor had state police increase ticketing meanwhile setting up an insurance fund for those who couldn't be insured by regular insurance companies due to points. This governor finally was put in jail. But not before many got their pockets lined. So, its easy to see how we are all being robbed by those who set the rules and their controllers (insurance companies).

To add insult to injury years ago we had auto insurance companies bragging in the local media (Ohio) about donating radar guns and similar equipment to law enforcement. It's a racket, the insurance company gets a big return on the cost of those donated radar guns in insurance surcharges on those ticketed. Hell, way back in the 90's we figured the total cost of one 2 point speeding ticket was at least $1,000, the cost of the ticket plus a $300 insurance surcharge per year for 3 years. It's well worth your time to plead not guilty and fight it in court using any technicality you can to beat it. If the LEO doesn't show for court ask for a dismissal etc.

Such catastrophic loss of life is almost unimaginable to watch from a distance and so hard to understand. It pains me that in addition to the fact based technical content you also need to provide this type of coverage. Very important, probably more immediately important to most of your viewers because it is happening not during a crisis but on otherwise unremarkable days when we might be out playing golf, riding our bikes or enjoying time with our families (or gasp, working at our jobs). It’s happening in government and corporate offices and in legislatures when we are living our lives and only enters our awareness when calamity hits and we find out, our safety net isn’t there at all. Thank you

You can blame the AOB contractors for a lot of these laws. They took advantage of a system, billed insane amount for little work, and sued the insurance company. I believe more contractors were suing the insurance companies under and AOB than the insureds themselves. Example- mitigation company claims storm water is cat 3 must be removed. Instead of removing the damaged materials they dry it for. 5 days and bill an insane amount. Then they sue. Why didn’t they tear out the damaged material then dry the sub-surface. Because they can bill more for drying then demo. Then they bill stupid $50k for a 5 day dry out when it could have been $10-15k . Let’s also not forget about the false plumbing bill, air assessor, and engineers writing false report to support their public adjuster/attorney friends. I know first hand because I worked on that side and hired someone of these companies in the beginning not knowing how corrupt they were. Then what do they do they sue. This was the problem and they put an end to it. The golden goose is no longer golden . Mold was gold back in the 2000s. Again mitigation companies took advantage and ruined now there’s limits. Look at the trend. It’s not just the carriers it’s the corrupt contractors also.

This actually sounds a lot like what constantly goes on in the auto insurance industry. It's not fraud for them to tell me what they will pay for and not and how much They have their hands so far in the books, formulas and procedures that we are required to go by. They decide the quality level of parts used to repair Worse part is they dictate how the repair will be done by refusing to pay for a different way. But the shop and the tech doing the work is expected to do the repair to manufacturers recommendations and procedures. If the shop and tech don't repair it properly even if it's because the insurance refuses to pay to do it correctly by procedure they can be both civil and criminally liable.

After 20 years of doing this I have amassed moe than I would likely be granted if I had a claim. I had relatively mild damage here in Lee County after Ian and I will be prudent in buying material and making repairs. So far I don't think I will have to touch my "insurance fund" to make things back to normal. Just shop materials wisely and sweat equity. I do hope your insight will help to make things fair for consumers and maybe change my attitude toward insurance companies.

Another twist is insurance companies sending reclamation companies to policyholder homes days after a storm. The reclamation companies fleece the homeowner by saying they will clean and return the house items, then hold them, hostage if the homeowner cannot or will not pay the ransom because of the overcharge on the items. For example, they say it costs the company $20 to clean a toy that can be purchased new for $5.

Most insurance companies do not like "public adjusters" if that is what these "independendent adjusters" are. The difference would be who hired the adjuster...the insurance company claims rep or the homeowner/policy holder. Public adjusters tend to advertise they will seek the best payment possible and the will do so at no charge to the customer except for they have a 10% fee of the total damage amount. This is based on the accepted full loss payment by the insurance company. An independant adjuster hired by the claims rep would be working for the insurance company as if they were an in house insurance adjuster. Usually, in big loss events like the hurricanes, insurance co's do not have enough staff to inspect every claim so they hire the outside or independant adjusters to assist in the high volume of claims. So, if these adjusters are in fact hired by the claims rep and then the estimates are altered in any way, its fraud. The actual person who wrote the estimates must be the one who make any legit changes...the claims rep can then add for other items that are not included on the inspection estimate. Seems like these insurance company executives and managers need to see some time inside a prison cell. BTW...as we have progressed the many decades, note how many safety and fire prevention building codes have been put into play and the number of losses that have been prevented compared to the older days. Homes and structures are built with more protections these days yet the cost of insurance continues to go up and up all while the number of claims shrink. Maybe its all of the foolish advertising and company expenses ?

I'm trying to think of novel ways to self-insure. Of course, I'm not rich but I do own my home out right. I wonder if we could somehow crowd fund partial solutions at least. A public insurance fund of sorts outside of any insurance company comprised of homeowners without mortgages. Simply supported by everyday average Joe's. We know we can't rely on government, especially the current admin that has passed these statutes and passed these laws. There has to be a way. Have to think outside of the box and take power back. The laws are written in their favor by the lobbyist on "K" Street and voted into law by Congress then signed by the president... Both have HUGE buildings full of lawyers just waiting for lawsuits to defend by denying claims or other disputes. The laws should be changed at the Federal level.
