if there's anyone in the UK reading this (I'm well drunk enough to not care for how long it's been since any of this info has been available), the US used to have a show called Mythbusters which featured a group of engineers and scientists who tested the plausibility of urban myths and modern fairytales. One of their experiments involved a room full of airborne sawdust particles and the spark of a handheld lighter to see whether the room would become engulfed in flames. It exploded. The "garage" they set up to test that myth fucking exploded. I miss that show. I miss popular science.

Harald Bluetooth was not called Bluetooth because he was addicted to blueberries btw, it's because in old Norse the words for blue and black were sometimes used interchangeably. So basically he had black rotten teeth (or a single really bad tooth) and that's why he was called Bluetooth.

In Old Norse Svartr = Black, Blár = Blue. So there were seperate words for blue and black in Old Norse. The words' origins predate Old Norse and their descendants survive in many Germanic languages for example German schwarz and blau, English swart and blue, and Swedish svart and blå.
