Such an underrated band. NOT a one-hit wonder as most people assume

When I got this album in 1983 I didn't have a clue how dark this was. I liked the music. Now, when I hear Stuart singing "save us from all worldly pain, save us from the glowing rain, save us from all love and hope, give us iron, give us rope" I interpret that as people exchanging freedom for protection.

Anytime I hear Porrohman unexpectedly, in the wild, I am blown away. An incredible song.

One of the best live bands in the 80s and 90s. I've lost count the number of times I've seen them (even now as they still tour without Stuart RIP or Tony Butler). Porrohman an absolute classic of a song and this along with The Crossing are possibly the two longest tracks they recorded?

I love this song and play it a lot, but am surprised to see you reacting to it! Unfortunately, Big Country did not get much play in the US.

Agree about the sound, well produced by Steve Lillywhite, who also did U2, XTc early albums. Angle Park, Heart & Soul and Teacher.. more hard driven decent from Big Country...

I think that Stuart Adamson was pretty dark and depressive with his lyrics and they probably resonate more in cold, rainy and dour places.

Oh man you didn't play the version I sent you months ago. It is faster and even more full of life (not to say this version has none). Go to Spotify and try the John Peel Session BBC 1983. Trust me. I guess someone else sent this one. Sweet. RIP Stuart.
