Shnootz - Reaction Video (Big Country - The Storm)

What's happening, people! I'm back with a handful of non-holiday reactions I found some time to shoot (only three, apologies), and I tried to return to a few deep-dives I've been neglecting (not intentionally, but there's a lot going on at Acid Techno St.). So the first of the three is another Big Country reaction, and this time we listen to "The Storm" from their 1983 album The Crossing. I really love this tune, and I'm beginning to get a feel for some of the characteristics of this group beyond the one hit-tune I knew from them. As such, let's sit back and enjoy a cracking tune from Big Country. Cheers!

I came from the hills with a tear in my eye The winter closed in and the crows filled the sky The houses were burning in flames gold and red The people were running with eyes full of dread Ah my James They didn't have to do this We chased them for miles I had tears in my eyes Through forest and moor as the clouds filled the sky The storm broke upon us with fury and flame Both hunters and hunted washed down in the rain Ah my James They didn't have to do this I know I can never return To the time of hope when I was born Let the strength of peace run through my hand When we walk away from the? stormy shore? Then I will be afraid no more And now I'm sure of where I stand Let the strength of peace run through this land And nobody smiled as we took back our own While rain beat upon us the thunder would moan And nobody smiled when we knew what was lost We knew well enough only time proves the cost Ah my James They didn't have to do this Ah my James They didn't have to do this I know I can never return To the time of hope when I was born Let the strength of peace run through my hand When we walk away from the? stormy shore? Then I will be afraid no more And now I'm sure of where I stand Let the strength of peace run through this land

Like a lot of Stuart's music this is inspired by elements of Scottish history, this time based around the Jacobite Rebellion. That is a base for the allegory that life will be hard sometimes for everyone, and we need to find the strength to fight on through it to see the better times. That's a theme that comes up repeatedly in BC's music.

Absolutely! They have a dynamic sound that is beyond the expectations I had based on their hit/theme song. And I’m going to try to hit this deep-dive more often from this point on, so don’t hesitate to ask if I’ve gone more than a week between Big Country reactions. Cheers!

This song's about the Scottish rebellion against the Protestant English king in the 1700s. "Oh, my James, they didn't have to do this" is a plea to Catholic King James.

You simply must review "Wonderland" and "All Fall Together" - you are on the right track: Big Country is one of the most underappreciated and underrated bands of the modern era. Stuart Adamson had the genius that Bono said he wished he had...

Enjoying you going through the Crossing (sounds best in the green cover), you've got some fantastic ground to cover especially if you go on to Steeltown and The Seer (which has a surprising backing singer).

Hey there! Yeah, I'm about 2/3 of the way through Steeltown now (and I've fixed my camera in the meantime, lol). Looking forward to hearing what you have to say about the songs I've already gone through!

@@mattsnider2667 cheers, I've subscribed and will catch up eventually. Another thing is these songs are very different live! At some point a live video from the Barrowlands in Glasgow will show how much we love this band. I'm going to see them in Ireland in a couple of weeks for the xxth time, seriously don't know how many, it's been years of following.
