Interesting song choice and nice to hear something different. I agree with Andy, such a shame it was poor quality audio as Big Country were a fantastic live band. I saw them supporting the Jam on their farewell tour. Like John, I only had the first album (excellent) then only really know the singles that followed. One song I've recently re-discovered is 'Just a shadow' there are a couple of brilliant live videos (NYC 86 and Peace concert East Berlin 88). Stuart's daughter Kirsten also popped up in my feed doing an accoustic cover of 'Just a shadow', really moving. She was only 16 when he took his life and went on to have her own music career. Also loved the Skids, the band Stuart was in before Big Country. Cheers guys!

"Save us from all love and hope, Give us iron, Give us rope!" I always looked at it as more that humans hate uncertainty, and would trade their freedoms for safety/protection. Iron = shackles and rope can either tie you down, or something to hang you by. This song is second or third on the record for me. I like Close Action and Harvest Home a great deal too.

Tony and Mark are one of the best rhythm sections anywhere. These guys, along with Gin Blossoms, Dave Matthews, John Hiatt, BoDeans, The Connells, Matthew Sweet, Lyle Lovett, & The Cruel Sea were the "new" bands that got me through the 80s and 90s... eta RIP Stuart. Thank You!

Dear Chaps, You mentioned the band "James". I hope that this is not stepping on any future reactions but I would like to share my “James” story. We moved to South Korea in 1998 and for two years the only TV that we had was AFKN - which was the US armed forces TV station. There were no commercials, but there was a lot of history and facts about American states and former battles etc. At the beginning of 2000 I got a job at a Korean university and we lived in the dormitory. We got a channel called (I think) Star Asia from Singapore (or was it Hing Kong?). They regularly used to play James - I Know What I'm Here For Apart from being an absolutely fantastic video, it has a special place in my heart. Keep up the good work chaps.

Bono wore a U2 T-shirt at their filmed Red Rocks concert. If you lived through the 80 you saw a lot of this. Don’t see the problem.

BC were the first real band (saw the bay city rollers at a free gig as a 9 year old kid) I saw live at Tiffanys in 1983 where they played fields of fire twice, the Lotus Eaters were an awesome support. I was at the Barrowlands for this particular gig and have seen the band countless times since the last occasion being on December 30th 2023 in Edinburgh, so many young people in that crowd too, lapping up one of the best live bands ever.

Dear chaps, I may be busy for a few days, so just in case, I am going to give a few days of songs to bring some light and joy into your life A couple of songs from a folk / jazz supergroup. Two live versions to show just how good they were. Pentangle - Light Flight (In Concert), 4th January 1971) Pentangle - Sally Free And Easy (Set Of Six ITV, 27.06.1972) A couple of live songs from radio sessions Alvvays - Archie, Marry Me (In session for Amazing Radio) - for a reason I don't know this song always reminds me of Scott Pilgrim - the movie and the comics Lush performing "Sweetness And Light" Live on KCRW Finally, two absolute gems. My wife laughs at me when I get over excited about how great a song is. But these two songs are so good that they.... Stereolab - Nihilist Assault Group Beth Orton - Couldn't Cause Me Harm Keep up the good work chaps

Incredible song, the build up, anitcipation, fantastic guitarist, very moody, almost poetic. The Crossing is a brilliant album, Big Country were forever changing, playing the commercial game with songs like In A Big Country, Fields Of Fire, Chance, Ships, Wonderland etc, but their best stuff is to be found on their rarer stuff, namely the 8 rarities CDs where you can find different versions of songs, a lot of Big Country stuff that made it to cd wasn't always the best version of a particular song and the production didn't always do the band the justice they deserved. I saw them at the Barrowlands, also in Manchester and I think in Birmingham back in the day on their Steeltown Tour. Another good listen is The Raphaels album Adamson worked on.

In the HG Wells story, the Porrohman is a supernatural force that pursues the protagonist from beyond the grave, eventually causing him to kill himself. This song can be read as depicting someone who is pursued by suicidal thoughts, something Adamson, the lyricist, eventually succumbed to. I think Adamson also often uses “We” to denote internal dialogue in his songs (“We are hiding in the forest,” “when our fate is in the hands of a demon or a god.”), especially in describing depression or internal conflict. Striking how the album the Crossing opens with the most uplifting song - basically also talking about depression, but fighting against it, and ends with the darkest one.

Cool band. Listened to it a lot. Bagpipe guitars, I called it as a child. My brother delivered a tape. It's one of those bands I don't revisit often, for some reason. Like Tears for Fears it gives me listeners fatigue. Unique sound, though. Simple Minds, New Castle 1982 live, is worth a watch. Before Don't You, they were fantastic.

😁 though I think I still prefer _The Tube_ version from six weeks later YT ID xQRxbjyQceo (better sound, better shirts, NO Bay Street Rollers-type scarves, an Adamson jump - but no roadie nearly getting lamped). Talking of dodgy stages, the famous thumps in The Dave Clark Five's "Glad All Over" mimic the band's attempts during live performances to stamp holes through the floor. (They sometimes succeeded, Health & Safety wasn't much of an issue in the early 60s.) +1 for James.
