I love this channel so much . Helped me out a lot with picking a new handheld since my last one (rg351p.) got messed up . I landed on the rg353V and I’m so excited about it after watching your videos on it .

I love that these very cool pieces of hardware can run custom Android ROMs. The de-googled one is particularly interesting to me. One thing that intrigues me about the RK3566 inside these is the data-link ECC RAM - a nice feature that I'd like to see on more SOCs.

Interesting development. This definitely might tip the 353 line of devices in favor of something to more seriously consider. The possibility of some real, light Android gaming alongside dual-booting into Linux for good lower-end emulation might be one heck of a wombo combo.

I think you can blame him, there's loads of comments about bricked devices and he doesn't seems to bother reading them otherwise he would have deleted the video or at least added a warning.

I was really hoping for the holy grail of 3 "yeah man I wanna do it" in one video 🤣 honestly I watched a bunch of videos trying to compare different emulation handhelds to pick up and I think I've decided to go with the ayn Loki mini pro with the Intel upgrade to an i3 1215u+. Been watching a bunch of test cases where that processor powers through everything you can basically throw at it. But I'm still very interested to pick up a couple of 353v maybe for the kids because they are really cool. Great video as always Russ!

Why did you decide with that system vs the steam deck? Looked up the Loki mini with the upgraded Intel. $355 + tax for the system and a screen protector. Not very far away from a steam deck. Been on the fence about which product to buy myself.

@@otroflores91 I think for my use case the stream deck is too large I need something more compact... Plus I really like ayns products and they are using newer sticks and other components that are appealing to me personally.... Plus I can put steam os on this and the base amount of storage is way higher than the base steam deck plus having a1080p screen... I can go on but the steam deck is amazing and I'm sure these will be too

353v with new V2 screen will have black screen after boot. It's likely that the screen driver is not tuned up yet for the upgraded version of this device. Looks like Black Seraph is still working on this.

Have you seen Black Seraph make any comment on this issue at all? So far it's crickets on the patreon, I tried reaching out on Twitter to no response as well. I haven't seen any evidence that he's even aware of the issue, let alone working on a solution.

@@user-ol1ns7ud7t as of earlier this week he still has not acknowledged that there is even a problem. One user commented on the latest newsletter asking if he even knows about the problem (it has the most upvotes of all the comments on that newsletter by far) but Black Seraph replied to multiple other comments on the newsletter but not that one. At this point I'm confident that Black Seraph is ignoring the problem and hoping everyone who paid $10 just for his OS to brick their device will just go away.

Great job, please do not forget HDMI output with different resolution feature included 640x480 for old 4/3 TV

Hey Russ have you tested out Citra on any of these devices running the new Android 12 update?

Nice video! It seems like a more direct comparison would be flycast on both android and ARKOS rather than flycast on ARKOS and Redream on android. Flycast performs better than Redream on this device for some reason.

So I just got a 353v and was planning on installing this but luckily I saw the recent comments saying the newer screens aren't compatible and people are bricking their devices. Does anyone know of any way to get the R2 and L2 buttons to work for game streaming?

I didn't get my hands on any of the new generation of Anbernics so please forgive me that maybe dumb question. I picked up you can choose to boot with Android or directly in the Games Menu. Since the new ones have Touchscreen does that Touch feature work on the Linux end as well, or just in Android Mode?

Hey! I found that if you delete a file called "bootFA" inside of the ANBERNIC partition of the sdcard with linux, you can boot again normally, you need to delete this file everytime you boot into android, but, apparently there are no corruption of the data

This is great! Thanks for all the hard work you and Blackseraph do. Just a quick note, I think it is only 6 Zip files and when you download them they are all numbered (I think number 1 is the one you said was unlabeled). This is awesome overall as I wasn't using Andriod at all before since I didn't want to sideload and had wifi issues, but excited to use Daijisho and a few Android games

Hello. Question, the ArkOS build for the RG353V also works for the RG353P? I ask because I went to the GitHub page and I didn't found a reference to the RG353P...

What I’m concluding from watching your content is that I need to go w an android device as I want to have Bluetooth audio for my gaming pleasure to use a my AirPods. I'm very new to the retro handheld scene and have just gotten my hands on the RG353M. Would this be the first thing you recommend installing to get the most out of this device?

comparing this update to your videos of the rg353p and the rg353v, if i'm not mistaken you said that EVERY N64 game was able to run at full speed after some tweaks like changing the emulation profile, even Cruisi'n USA, so as far as I can tell the N64 emulation is worse in the Black Serah build than the stock version of Android. Also same with NDS where while using Black Serah build you can play at high res, in the stock version of Android you can double it. In conclusion as a jelOS/ Android user, what you'd get will be a better performance in PSP games + the ability to use the Aurora Store, everything else referring to console emulation is the same or straight up worse. This does not mean that indie programmers should not get credit, since it's great to have as much possibilites to customize your experience. Also we need to consider that is a beta-build but we can't forget it's a 11 euros-per-month beta build after all.

Great points, one clarification is that the high res setting in DraStic = 2x resolution on NDS, so the performance is the same between those two, I just used two different ways of describing it. My apologies for the confusion. Yes, N64 is a little bit slower on the Android 12 build here, so by going with the Black Seraph build certain games (Cruis'n USA, Conker, 007) won't be full speed. Definitely a tradeoff for the clean and stable Android build here. Bear in mind this is a day one release, and Black Seraph tends to tweak his builds over time and so we will likely see improvements in the coming weeks. He told me that he does have plans to provide a "downgrade" option to Android 9 in the future, which should hopefully open up some better performance as well. Ideally this will give us the best of both worlds!

​@@RetroGameCorps as I mentioned, we cannot judge a book by its cover as well as we can't judge an Android build by its beta release, I just threw some thoughts into the air to reflect on whether we should update the software right now or leave it as is for the time being, considering the performance cost. I guess we'll have to wait and see the final states of the build and I hope to see you in another video discussing the performance boost or any new updates on the project to see if it is worth giving it a try. Thank you for spending your time reading the comments.

When you plug your micro sd card back in after booting in android, does it recognize roms on that card? I can get arkos on linux to see and play all my roms, but not on the android side. Thank you for your help.

Russ, great review as always. But you have forgotten the most important thing, what actually interests the owners of this console the most: a comparison with the stock version of Android (11). Is it worth upgrading to this Android version of Black Seraph? Is the performance better? Because with the same performance in the end it doesn't make much sense to spend 10 euros when all RG353X already have Android pre-installed... To convince me to change this version of Android 12 it must offer better performance.

This is really cool and I'm loving it, but I'm wondering if there's any way to use all the ports that work with Anberports. Those aren't android apps, so I'm guessing that using this firmware removes the ability to play those?

Does anyone know how to re-open the emulator? It is on the android screen and I cannot get it back to open it up again. PLEASE help! RG353V

Hey guys, I got the RG353V and it´s not really that good for PSP games. Witch upscale type it´s the less demanding? (XBRZ, Hybrid, Bicubic). There is another suggestion on how I can get a little bust in performancing? Tks.

My understanding is that it's something baked into the Anbernic kernel and they won't share their sources, so the devs can't implement it.

fewt explained it over discord, they COULD implement it, but apparently the way Anbernic set it up, it's dangerous and has led to bugs where people get stuck in only one OS. If Anbernic actually released their sourcers, someone could probably fix it, but they just don't release the sources, even though they promised the devs they would. That's why a lot of them are dropping support for future Anbernic devices.

Russ how is the battery life? 🙂 Which Standby does drain more? Asking because I think Android should be so much more easy to handle if you can just click the power button shortly to go into standby (is it even working like that? 😅) I always have issues with the Linux OS'es and Standby sadly 😕

Standby works great on this build, it's very stable in that you can tap the power button turn it off and on. As far as battery drain, I don't have the Anbernic Android build to compare anymore, but I left my RG353V in standby overnight last night and it lost about 6% battery life. So not the greatest for long-term standby but will work find throughout the day.

When I saw custom Android I knew it would be Black Seraph and their subscription model. What needs to be noted is that outside of Retroarch, EVERYTHING costs money on Android, even custom firmware. For the RG552 I saw no reason to run anything but stock Android 11, Daijisho and AuroraStore early this year an it’s been perfect. For Linux AmberElec or JelOS.

Literally the only custom firmware for anything that requires a subscription and doesn't just take donations. This is a major violation of the GPL and just a really shitty way of doing things. I won't be supporting anything BlackSeraph does.

I got a 552 at launch and if i'm honest the first few Black Seraph firmwares were a godsend, because they finally made the device what it should have been at release, and i was happy to pay for their hard work - Anbernic shouldn't be relying on amateur devs bailing them out though, obviously. I wouldn't say *everything* is paid on Android (PPSSPP, Mupen, Flycast, etc), but most do have a optional upgrade, and surely given that the ROMs are free, the emu devs deserve a small one-off fee for their craft?

@@TK1s_Big_Love I believe @Richard Craig is actually referring to GPL\GNU (General Public License). Nothing to do with the Google Play Store. It's a form of abuse of the provided open source licenses for which BlackSeraph's work is based upon.

Hey Russ, have you thought about doing a video on organizing handhelds?

Sorry if this is dumb, but can you sync safe files between stock linux and the seraph android boot? Also, I have to manually delete a boot file on while in android if I want to shut down and boot on linux again. Is there a way around this?

Can you run xbox remote play without gapps/google play? I found it interesting that you went from gapps on/off performance testing right into streaming, without addressing the requirements for the various streaming apps. I've also experienced that problem where my trigger buttons don't work in xbox remote play on a hacked switch running switchroot and thought I had misconfigured something. Once again I've learned a lot watching a video for a device I'm never going to purchase, amazing!

Hi Mike, you can sideload Xbox apps via Aurora store, it will give you an error but I have still been able to get it working. You can also access Xbox game pass streaming via a browser as well.

In Black Seraph does the TF2 slot not work? I have tested it with known working SD cards on 2 different devices. the SD card is 256G and formatted both with android and then with my pc in exFat. it is never registered on the TF2 slot. It is registered in the TF1 slot however.

You think that this update is better than the official from anbernic?, I just got this console with a good discount and I'm planning on using it with Android for the touchscreen. Are newer Android mods for the 353p? Thanks

I likely won't make a video on it, but yeah I use a phone for my top-down content, connected to a boom arm above my desk. I record all my footage over a period of several days, then edit it all together. Then I record the voiceover, and then stitch it all together at the end. Best of luck with making your own content!

I have the Linux only vs version. Is this just a complete Linux update from what comes stock? Also is there any way to boot android on mine running just Linux?

I just got a RG353M and attempted to install this but it just bootlooped on the Anbernic Logo forever which is a shame. If you just got a RG353 device i would still recommend attempting to update unless you are using a newer RG353V ( there is apperently a variant with a new screen called the V2 that bricks if you attempt this). Even if the update doesnt work on all other devices, you can still recover the original android build from the anbernic website and so its reversible (From what i have heard online, reversing the RG353V is difficult but not impossible)

With this shouldn’t we be able to trade Pokémon with Bluetooth like you can on the rp2/3?

What do you do when you put the SD in the 353v and you end up with a black screen? In hindsight I'm guessing I have the v2... so now Black Seraph has my $10 and I have a bricked device.....

I really like the RG353M but I feel like this is still not strong enough for such a device (one with two analog sticks). Guess we still have to wait a few years until there will be such a beautiful 4:3 device such as the the mentioned RG353M that's capable of playing Saturn, Dreamcast, PSP, PS2 and GameCube just fine. I'd definitely do a purchase then.

Get the Steam Deck if you want power. It isn't 4:3, but it can emulate just about anything, even PS3, Wii/U/Switch and Xbox, along with playing your PC library

@@TarikA It's not 4:3, but Dolphin supports wide-screen for most games. I personally have an RG353M and a Deck, and one is better for portable retro titles while the other is better for more modern generation titles, especially since Wii, original Xbox, and PS2 have wide-screen.

@retrogamecorps is like that indie band you know about, but don't want it to get too popular because others will know about it too. I love this channel. Happy for it's success and hope it keeps growing.

I'd check out my "favorite devices of 2022" video I recently released but I would say for those systems, the RG353V that I used in this video is a great fit.

I feel like this is for the really hardcore retro gamers, (which I am not ) I have an RG353vs (Linux only), and it runs all the games I want to play just fine.(Doom & Zelda), but to me I also feel like the RG353V would be fun to mess around with and modify solely on the android side of things. I'd love to look into it and see if the android version is root friendly and get some custom boot images and ROM's.

Will it still affect the performance if you disable Google Services before emulation?

Can someone please help? I have issues with the android option on the anbernic RG353V. Screen with a passcode. Is that normal like factory ? Or a way to reset it

Waiting for a device, Android based like the V, but able to run everything up to Dreamcast at full speed.

i installed the custom firmware, got play store and download some game on it but the buttom is not working, is there a way to fix it ?

ArkOS also currently not functional on RG353M v2 devices. You can use the modified .dtb file to resolve the display issues, but it only seems to work temporarily. I had to switch to "UnofficialOS" which gives great performance but unfortunately is in desperate need of an update. You can resolve most of the issues and update a lot of the features yourself manually, but it is alot of messing around especially for people that are very new to these devices. GammaOS is another option for the android side, but again requires a lot of messing around to get it functional on v2 devices. Overall if you're looking to buy one of these devices in 2024 I can't recommend the RG353M :( you'll be better off with a RG405M, or if you're not interested in those harder to run dc/n64/psp titles the RG35XXH is a decent little unit for the price.

What do I do with the sdcard that has been flashed after removing it from the installation? Like what can I do with it? Can I put it back into the first slot after everything is done? Should I format it first?

My issue with this device is that - more than 2 years after release and with so many devices coming out after it that are more powerful and about the same price. This is the same price as it was at launch. IN fact in the UK the mean price is a little more than it was in 2022. I only really want this one because of the form factor but will now go with something else and put up with it feeling a bit "off".

Hi friend, I need your help. A friend and I both bought the anbernic 353v last mounth. We wish we could play online but at the moment we are not succeeding! We did several tests... (obviously same roms). We have enabled the netplay, created the nick. After starting the same game from fbneo or mame or neogeo, from settings - netplay, one chooses item "Host - Start netplay host", and the other tries to connect to that host from the list of available hosts (item : Update host list for netplay), but we always get error! We can't play we're going crazy. Can you help me??

so I did Tinker Toys tutorial to add root and play store. Wondering if I should keep his update or use this one…going to try. hopefully wifi is better

once i boot into android for the first time my rg353v wont boot back into stock firmware. not sure what to do here.

Whenever I try this I just get a black screen and iv tried on a rg343v at first which I thought was the issues so I tried in an rg353m and still the same thing. I’ve bricked the android side on my v and not looking to do it an the m. Any tips on how to get it to flash?

I tried this and now I’m stuck in the android loading side. I swapped it to load there be default before I did the update because the original settings had an option for it. I regret doing this update. I Is there any known fix for this?

If you have the v2 screen it will cause a black screen and cant do anything until you flash the anbernic version

Isnt it possible to download APKs on Pc from playstore and then copy to the handheld? So i have no overhead at all?

I can’t get Moonlight to work on this system. It connects but only shows a black screen and says it’s slow then disconnects. It’s on good WiFi and fiber net

already updated to android 12 with seraphs, however the playstore is not working. its says my device is not compatible. what to do?

I did update, was simple but i ran into new issues. My face buttons arent working on random android games.GTA:SA and dead cells. Also a few apps are opening in the wrong orientation. Any ideas?

​@Retro Game Corps there are issues with black seraph android... it is currently incompatable with the v2 screens. Doesnt appear to be any update eta on black seraph side from what I can see... alot of not please folks on the comment. A few here as well... you may want add can update? (Love everything your doing with this channel keep on rocking!)
