Bicycle Freehub Tear Down | GCN Tech Deep Dive

Freehubs are an integral part of any standard road bike. Without them, we'd all be cycling around on fixies! But how does a freehub actually work? Well, in this video, Alex strips apart a freehub to show you just what's inside, and how they actually work!

    Soooo you found tool-free rear hub to show the steps, nice - but most of us need to deal with narrow locknuts needing cone spanners, awkward hex key sizes (11mm anyone?), proprietary freehub remover tools, hammering out the axle, etc... would be nice to see a complete strip down of one of the more complicated rear hubs, maybe a DT swiss one as they are so widely used, or a Novatec?

    Just a quick note at 6:28, for this flavor of freehub used on Hunt wheels, the red washer (on the table next to the endcaps) goes between the bearing and freehub. Without the washer, the freehub will not rotate freely.

    My advice for the grease in freehubs is to apply winch grease (used on sailing yachts) that is more waterproof than standard types of grease. Winch grease, like from the brand Harken, can withstand and is designed for more agressive environments.

    A hub with decent seals to begin with is an even better idea. You're solving the wrong problem changing your grease to try and solve a sealing issue.

    @@peglor That’s right. My current (rather cheap) wheelset has issues like bad sealing in the rear hub. But I want to avoid buying new parts as much as possible. Apart from that, more water resistant grease is not a bad idea in parts that are sprayed a lot, like the lower bearing in the steerer tube for example.

    No mention of Shimano microspline, which allows Shimano cassettes to have 10 tooth top gears? I'm not sure there are road bike drivetrain options for it yet, but it's been available for MTB's for well over 2 years at this stage. If you want to list all the popular freehub standards it is conspicuous by its absence.

    So I’m having an issue with a brand new hub. When I have the rear wheel out of the frame the free hub will coast and engage freely. As soon as I tighten it in the frame it no longer coasts and throws the chain off the top of the drive train. Because of my dropout spacing (141 boost QR) combined with my rims spoke count (36 hole) I had to somewhat blend different standards, which admittedly may or may not be a great thing to do. I am running a koozer xm 490, 36 hole hub that is a 135 mm non boost QR, set up with endcaps that make it a 142mm through axle with an hg free hub body. To use this set up in my 141QR boost spacing, I am using a through axle adapter that transitions from an external diameter of 12mm which fits the endcaps, to a 9/10mm end that’s fits the dropouts. Holding this in place is my stock QR 5mm axle strung through the adapter and frame. For some reason it will not free coast. The stock bike is a 2020 Schwinn Axum. Any feedback I’ll take.

    Nice video although you took the easy option with a freehub that literally pulled apart. Many ‘everyday’ hubs are fixed with an internal Allen key and it would have been a bit more useful to show how to dismantle these as they’re more common.

    Nice job! Can you buy a freeHUB wheel for bikes with 126mm dropouts? I's like to update my vintage steel road bike from freeWHEEL to freeHUB technology, but I've never seen a 126mm freeHUB wheel.

  • @peglor

    @peglor

    3 жыл бұрын

    The usual solution to this is, rather than trying to get a modern freehub onto an old hub width, is to 'cold set' the frame, which is literally to bend the dropouts further apart to take a standard 130 mm road hub. There's so little difference that most frames, especially vintage steel ones, will take the wider hub without the need to set the frame at all, but it will be a pain to get the wheel in and out. Try a proper old school bike shop or a frame builder and you'll find people who can do it for you. In frame building this flexing process is how they deal with any small misalignments that build up during welding too, so it will be completely familiar to frame builders.

    Free-coaster Vs. Free-wheel Vs. Fix-gear!?!? Free-coaster allows you to ride backwards without back-pedalling, while a free-wheel cassette you will have to back-pedal to ride backwards. A fix-gear can be pedaled in both directions, that is forward and backwards.

    The only problem with freewheels was the axle on the rear wheel bending or snapping. It was a universal, wide spread problem.

  • @peglor

    @peglor

    3 жыл бұрын

    That wasn't the only problem - most of them wouldn't run true, so on a modern 10+ gear drivetrain there would be enough wobble to create noise at the very least and probably ghost shifting. They were also a pain to remove if the rider was heavy or strong or ran lowish gears, or had a rim failure that left you without anything to lever off to unscrew the freewheel, forcing you to rebuild the wheel with the spokes it came with to unscrew the freewheel, and then dismantle the wheel again to replace the spokes and do a proper rebuild. They weighed considerably more too as they had to use steel parts to support the sprockets, bearings and freewheel mechanism. The design could be modernised to fix some of these issues, but the cantilevered axle and threaded connection to the hub were fundamentally bad design decisions.

    Depends on the particular hub and the conditions you're using it in. Hope's work perfectly well with fairly thick grease in them. Chris kings with the same grease probably wont get freewheel engagement at all. The wetter the conditions you use the hub in the thicker the grease you should use is a good guideline, though if the temperatures are extremely low, the grease being too thick at the really low temperatures might be an issue.
