BICEPS TENDONITIS

www.themuscledoc.com Biceps tendonitis is a common plague in may strength sports. This condition is very often understood.
Tendonitis is a term that often associated with over use injuries, but are most often found in sports where biceps training isn't often emphasized.
These muscles are commonly seen as elbow flexors, and training them is minimized to aesthetics only, however, the long head of the biceps tendon acts as a humeral head depressor.
The Biceps act as a dynamic stabilizer of the shoulder, but standard bicep curls wont adequately train the ability of the humors to stabilize, because conventional bicep curls are performed in a stable shoulder position.
This modification of the Bicep Curl trains the biceps in an unstable position of the shoulder.

    Hey wasup Muscle Doc. I appreciate the video on this subject. I had surgery done back in Sep 2019 (shoulder arthroscopy and sub-pectoralis minor bicep tendon tenodesis). I did some rehab (not the ideal amount due to bad Healthcare) but anyhow I was doing pretty darn good and sort of ahead of schedule in healing the area. Unfortunately recently during a gym session (not sure exactly what exercise) old symptoms of tendonitis came back with some new ones like the fact I can touch or gently tap with finger the area of main discomfort (front delt) and when I do, I feel a zap from there that runs across down the bicep and into mid forearm. This is really setting me back man. I probably pushed and here I am now. I'm older 48, but in school for fitness training and this is major set back for me, or at least it feels that way. Are there other exercises you'd recommend solely based on the tendonitis issue you are talking about and not so much on my issue since, in my case it might be different for the fact of surgery. Thanks

    Hi, This is very interesting ..so am I right in saying this exercise will put emphasis on strengthening the long head up near the bicipital Grove where the inflammation is?.. I'm guessing a little irritation while performing the exercise is normal for the healing? Thanks

    Great video!! I have been working out for over 3 years now and this is the first time I am feeling this discomfort. I had a feeling of weakness in my bicep at first.I couldn't even lift my laundry basket without me having to switch to my left hand. Now its just an uncomfortable mild pain on the lower up to the center of my bicep. It kind of felt like a bruise when it started. Would this be tendonitis? If so, whats the best treatment for this?

    Brandon Snyder the research is too contentious to give a recommendation. I would try either lax ball to brachialis/ brachiorad. Flossing ( video on channel) or " unwind your elbow pain " ( video also on channel)

    Your videos are insightful and knowledgeable. Wondering if you've heard of pain from the "funny bone" that radiates down the forearm. I've had this tightness/pain for a few years. At its worst it went all the way to my knuckles where my middle and index fingers met. I couldn't bend my wrist down because it felt like my tendons were tearing/burning. It's gone now, but any type of pressing exercise causes a dull pain in the tendon that connects at my tricep and elbow. Any thoughts on this?

  • @Themuscledoc

    @Themuscledoc

    outoffocus04101 That's interesting ... the "funny "bone is the insertion of all triceps . Now, did it only hurt with pressing ? Or would isolation if the tricep also cause it. How's your shoulder rotation ? Specifically external rotation ?

  • @outoffocus04101

    @outoffocus04101

    The Muscle Doc Tricep Isolation exercises also cause pain, with the exception of dumbbell kickbacks. But any tricep press, shoulder press, or bench press will cause it to act up. Shoulders are a bit tight. A trainer has said they are pulled forward a bit. Been doing exercises you have talked about to gain more flexibility.

    @p.e.3653 with bicep tendonitis have you guys noticed that it's hard to lift anything off the ground while your arm is straight? I passed the hook test and mine is not torn but it's been about 4 or 5 weeks since I injured the distol tendon and I notice the weakness more than ever when trying to pick something up off the floor or anytime my arm is straight... it feels like there's no strength in the forearms and below the elbow? Is that normal for bicep tendonitis?

    Mine is distal bicep tendonitis, and i can't find a lot of good information. I think eccentric slow drops down to 90 degrees are ok to do, so long as i use my good arm to lift the weight back up, but again, i just can't find any info. I can't stop training because my entire upper body is affected here, but the pain is a solid warning that something really bad will happen soon if i don't stop loading it. Doesn't matter if it's curls, rows, pull downs, etc. I have taken time off to where it stops hurting, but then it just comes right back, no matter how low i go on the weight.

Also, it's only on the right side, left side is fine and I noticed that when I foam roll my lats, and scapula, I feel a pain on the right side around that area, left side is fine, is this bicep tendonitis?

    Hey man, I've been a weight lifter for over 27 years and I've had my fair share of shoulder injuries. I've been fighting Bicep tendonitis of the long head for 6 months now and it's really been a problem. My doctor has done nothing more then give me a cortisone injection up to this point. What type of frequency should I be doing for this exercise, and can you recommend any other exercises that will help speed up the recovery process?

    tabatuby , ive been supplementing with collagen (VitaDirect Premium Grade Collagen Hydrolysate) mixed into my protein shake, also alternating ice/heat for 20 min per day, using a lacrosse ball and placing it into the sore area of my shoulder and rolling it around to break up scar tissue and increase circulation. I feel like the collagen supplement has actually helped because my shoulder is feeling a bit better lately. I've been able to do a little bit of light benching now. But everything you do you have to be religious about because nothing works fast, all these little things have a cumulative effect over the course of weeks and months. Good luck

    8 months here. Just recently gained the confidence to go back in the gym. I do very light weight on hammer curls, lateral shoulder raises, overhead curls, and shoulder press. VERY light weight. If I feel pain, I stop immediately. I feel like my tendon is strengthing from a very weak state compared to my other tendons. I think this is going to ultimately cure it

    @@Stekaren for me it ended up with me taking about a year off upper body. I focused on cardio and legs. I finally felt good enough to start working upper body, but still couldnt bench, just cable flies. After getting back some good size and strength the shoulder started acting up again which led to taking off 3 more months on upper body. Im 47 and have done a lot of damage over the years after 30 years of hard training. Im at the point where i have to avoid all overhead work both pulling and pressing, and I have to vary my exercises more frequently to avoid over use injuries. I wish you luck man.
