Biblical Sexuality: Will We Find Freedom in Christ or in Our Feelings? with Rosaria Butterfield

Over twenty years ago, Rosaria Butterfield was a tenured professor of English literature and women's studies at Syracuse University. Her primary academic field was critical theory specializing in queer theory. She lobbied for LGBT aims alongside her lesbian partner until she encountered Christ in what she described as a "train wreck" in 1999. She joins me on the podcast to share her razor sharp insights when it comes to biblical sexuality, identity, and repentance. Her academic background with a historical focus on 19th century literature informed by Marx, Darwin, and Freud has given her a unique understanding of how our culture has been influenced by these historical figures when it comes to sexuality and identity.

    I’ve had friends say that Rosaria can come across as harsh but as a struggler of SSA and having to tread the waters of all these “sides” to Christianity, I’ve been most grateful for her voice on this. As a believer I am not in a category all my own like side b or a suggests. I am a part of the Church with a whole new identity. Nothing is attached to my name but Christ. Hallelujah.

    @@gabrielamartiniuc6322 It’s not so much that as it is a language misunderstanding. Most people in the church today use the word gay as an adjective modifier meaning a defining term because they don’t know what to call people who identify as gay in or out of the church. Rosaria has done a great job helping define terms biblically which will lead to great understanding among friends/church family. I love hearing Alisa speak but when a guest is on I really do want to hear from them as well. I get frustrated with the majority of news shows and podcasts because just when the guest is getting to the main point, the host invariably jumps in with a totally different question and derails the entire train of thought. As a former addict it’s easy for me to look at my past addiction as being forever a part of my nature. But it’s not. It’s simply a part of my past/biography. @@lynnm.2019 Oh man!!… that’s really sad to hear that you have a close friend living under that kind of burden!! That’s really sad. I would lovingly dispute to her that I was born a liar, a murderer, and a thief, according to the Gospel of Jesus Christ…. We all were. But then we were saved! We were regenerated after being blessed with realizing our sin, and wholeheartedly repenting, and putting our trust in Jesus’ work on the cross to atone for our sins. And now I AM a new creature in Christ. I no longer lust after the sinful life of my past. I longer hate and seek revenge. And I am bothered if a misrepresentation leaves my lips, so much so that I can’t imagine actually lying now. The people with the burden of AA can’t have a foot in 2 different gardens. So they must chose. Either Christ is enough, and they believe God at His Word. Or…. They don’t. So I think… humbly… agreeing to not discuss it just to remain civility, is literally agreeing to endorse their sin lifestyle. Agreeing to NOT continue to point at the sin until they repent… is conceding to the sin lifestyle. And it’s risking her eternal salvation. Frankly. Think of the scriptures that list everyone that will depart in the lake of fire. If she doesn’t repent for this, she’s on that list too. And the aspect of what she said to her kids… as a mother, I JUST CANT DEAL WITH HEARING THAT! God says that He doesn’t punish children for the sins of their fathers, if they are in Christ. She is blaspheming God by saying that to anyone. AND as a person that has an addict mother myself, I am literally night and day from my mother. She has chosen to be a victim, she has chosen to stay in sin, she has chosen the AA culture, and she has rejected the biblical Christ and Gospel, making a god in her own image. I would dare anyone to try and tell me that I’m an addict by legacy of my blood. Absolutely not, because I am a child of God, I am free in Christ, and the fruits of my entire life have already proven that. Ok sorry, I got a bit heated there. 😂 I am passionate about anyone stumbling children though, so I can get a little firey on that topic. Have you considered, what this relationship might mean for you personally? You know what God says on the matter, and perhaps God is really trying to use you here, and perhaps it’s also a test of your own steadfastness. Have you considered or thought about that at all? Maybe it would be a consideration to maybe have a very serious but loving sit down with her, and get very official about it. And perhaps involve other trusted Christians too. And maybe begin a Matthew reconciliation process, and urge her to repent and turn towards Christ’s truth. And then if you go through all 3 steps, prayerfully, loving, and with wisdom and counsel, and she refuses to realize her sin and repent. Then perhaps the friendship would need to change at that point. Into more loving her from a distance, so she has the space to realize this isn’t a joke. Matthew says then you treat her as an unbeliever or tax collector. And that provides the space sometimes that God needs to really work in peoples hearts. When people don’t lose anything for their staying in sin… what motivation is there for them to consider changing? They get to have their cake and eat it too, so they don’t care. But losing relationships can suddenly spur them into caring. It’s tough love yes, but it’s biblical, and necessary according to the book of Matthew. You’re in my prayers sis. ♥️♥️🙏🏽🙏🏽♥️♥️

On another note, my son donated sperm to a lesbian couple and we now have a grandson being raised calling our son "donor daddy". This breaks my heart. Everyone wants us to be the super grandparents to this child (we have met him) but this is a hard situation.

Prayerfully consider Using whatever time you get with the child to plant seeds for the Gospel & play real gospel music, teach him chilrens gospel songs & how to pray. Perhaps they will all get saved & regenerated. Or Sadly, you may find that window of opportunity will close bc they may not like your influence, but you can plant seeds, maybe water them.

    This discussion was excellent until the last 8 minutes. You don't come against the devil or voices by saying you are baptized and are a member of a church but with the Word of God which says, as she said earlier, that if we are in Christ then "we are a new creation, old things are passed away and behold all things are become new" and because you have been washed by the Blood of Jesus and are regenerated and sealed by the Holy Spirit. Also, I didn't understand "the many voices of Jesus" comment and we need to be careful who we tell our sins to because people are human. Go to the Word and to Jesus because you can always trust them. When I was young in the Lord, I made the mistake of telling my pastor at the time and a friend of a sin I was dealing with, and I regret it to this day. I learned from that to go directly to Jesus with whatever I am dealing with and put it in His very capable hands.

She speaks boldly of truth from God’s word. God’s truth will often make our self or idol worship uncomfortable. She sounds like she could attend my family’s church because it is rare to hear someone speak about repentance in the way she did. In my own life’s story, I have struggled with heterosexual hedonism and am paying significant consequences, but sorrow over those consequences I can say is not repentance that is real. I love how David expresses his repentant heart in Psalms 38 & 51. These Psalms help me express my humility to God. Thanks again!

    DE Klingenberg, recognizing and admitting the heterosexual "hedonism" are first steps, but just as a person cannot regenerate himself or herself neither can we manufacture repentant "spirits" (at the level of the heart) but you can physically turn away from the sin of which you are convicted and confess it openly to some you know and you trust( james 5:16); beyond that focus on walking with Christ and honoring Him especially making sure you participate in public worship. personally I've always found myself both convicted and inspired when lifting my voice in song of public worship( often the back-thought being the indescribable nature of saving grace and me knowing i absolutely did not deserve to be singing with joy of hope, while I couldn't help but do and, love more than any woman, doing exactly that). I'm male.

    It is important to distinguish between repentance and recovery. If we define repentance as a “turning away from sin”, thus we never commit the sin again, we are not only setting ourselves up for failure, depression, and a questioning of our own faith….but we are also re-establishing the necessity for a works based salvation. Our life experience should help us recognize that we fail more often than we succeed in overcoming our sin. It is always a long and arduous climb. Repentance starts with the Spirit identifying our sin. This leads an attentive Christian to acknowledging it. The Christian then must accept it, removing excuses and justifications. I am not sure if “hating” is the right term for the next step, but a general revulsion to the sin is what will help lead us to recovery. However, at this point we are now extending beyond repentance. That does not diminish the significance of recovering from sin, it just allows us to fall on our knees and thank Jesus for what His sacrifice has accomplished. If you still feel the guilt of your sin, you are in repentance. You may not be actively, or effectively, trying to recover from your sin, but Christ is not going to walk away from you because of your failure. Don’t give up. Never stop striving towards spiritual perfection, even though we will never reach it. Seek the Spirit first thing every day, that is a great start.

  • @craigfield9037

    @craigfield9037

    There is one thing I wanted to mention regarding recovery. Effectively recovering from our sins requires us to replace sin with something else more spiritually positive. We are creatures of habit. If we establish more positive habits, we will have more success. If we attempt to remove the sin but leave a void, we will tend to return to the sinful nature. This applies to everything from our diet, our physical activity, our financial responsibility, addictions to the TV, the internet, drugs, sex, pornography….even the way we express ourselves with vulgar jokes or vocabulary. All these things can be changes by substituting them with thoughts or activities that are more positive. I will repeat…Seek the Spirit first thing every day, that is a great start.

    Yes, how we view sin (abhor/hate) is what true repentance is together with our trusting the Holy Spirit to complete the good work began in us as we put our faith and trust in what Jesus accomplished for us on the Cross. If we still love our sin, then we have not truly repented. Also, when we try to overcome by our own ability, we fail every time.

  • @craigfield9037

    @craigfield9037

    @@carolfalls8466 I agree with you, however, the one interesting thing is how we graduate from one sin (overcome it) only to find that the Spirit is now convicting us of another one. We don’t always have the same revulsion for some sins as we have for others. For instance, I can still find myself laughing at crude humor at times, but I suspect that as I grow spiritually, I will eventually grow to be more critical of that type of humor. I feel as if I have bigger fish to fry right now. You know what I mean?

  • @carolfalls8466

    @@craigfield9037 Yes. This is why we must continue in the Word and trust in the convicting power of the Holy Spirit our Helper to make us aware when we miss the mark which He is faithful to do. The moment we receive Jesus we are declared sanctified and righteous (justified) in the eyes of God but the sanctification process doesn't end there. There is what I like to call our "progressive" sanctification which leads us to victory. We must work out our salvation in fear and trembling as the word tells us in Phil. 2:12. I also find that God is gracious to not reveal all of our flaws all at once or we couldn't handle it. The older I get and the more I grow in the Lord the more I see how much I fall short of HIs glory! This is part of the perfecting process of the good work He began in us that doesn't happen overnight. This is why I am thankful for long life!! I find my love for Him grows deeper each day. Good discussion.

    Super helpful and thank you for the full-throated defense of the gospel! Even just speaking the Word on this topic has burned up the remaining 5% of my doubt on this issue. Homosexuality is sin. As for me, I just left a 5 and 1/2 year homosexual relationship last Monday because I was so deeply convicted about the truth of Gods Word and my state as a sinner. I was a professing Christian since I was 12, then idolized success during college, stopped the basic disciplines of Christianity, grew cold, and walked away from God. I lived in sin for almost a decade, the later half of which was a great relationship, from a worldly perspective. Over the last three months, God did a miraculous work in my life: through various Christians and a couple of sermons, he brought conviction to my heart, and told me to choose “Him” today, with Hell standing before me. I was cornered, and chose to turn from my sin and run to Christ. Last Monday, I shared the gospel with my ex, and for three days we talked about the legitimacy of the Bible, the message of Christ, our state of sin (by nature and by choice), it’s power and it’s penalty, the offer of God to free us from the power of sin today, and death forever through Jesus, who paid for our sins who reconciles us to God forever. Then, I booked a flight and left NYC on Saturday. Im not even sure where I’ll be living in a month, but I can’t turn back. I won’t. While that appears to be repentance, I’m not sure it is, yet (???) I don’t yet feel a deep seeded grief of my sin or an all-out hatred of it. I hate that I don’t feel it. Right now, my heart is so inclined to make the reality of the word a trivial thing, but I know it’s not. I turned from my sin, convicted by the Holy Spirit, and am cleaving to Christ (or maybe seeking Him?) in His Word and in prayer, but I don’t feel like I hate my sin. I wish that I despised it and was so broken over it but I’m sort of numb. I’m only operating out of the knowledge of what I know is true. I’m not sure if I’m saved or if I ever was saved. Part of me has comfort knowing that Christ says if we seek, we WILL find and that if we draw near to Him, he will draw near to us. So, I’m doing that now, and I’ve been praying for godly sorrow and a repentance that bears fruit befitting of true repentance. Whether or not I’m saved, the answer for the believer and the non-believer is to repent and throw yourself onto the arms of Christ. I take comfort in that Gods promises are true. If anyone is in the same spot, feel free to reach out. I would love to know your story and if/how you were restored. Cory

    I appreciate your guest and her message. I have a daughter who left her marriage of 20 years to become a lesbian. She’s planning to marry not lover this summer. Raised as a believer, knows better but as her mother and father we are unsure how to approach this wedding. My husband feels we should go to support her as our daughter but not stay to celebrate. I have mixed emotions but don’t want her to reinforce her feelings that we reject her.

    She asked the question “ why people have a hard time talking to other people” Maybe because, speaking about myself, I get intimidated with questions that I really don’t know the answer to and I realize that my feelings get in the way and so now it’s a battle of I feel and that person feels and it’s not on factual basis to some extent, but now a battle of feelings. Also for me I’ve steered clear of reading the other side, so I fight from a feeling of what I know. I love how she explains The gospel so clearly. It has been a joy and a challenge to listen because it makes me go back to scripture and really seek truth for myself so when I come to talk to my neighbor I do it with such love and grace that Jesus is the one responding to their questions through me. Thank you for this. So powerful

    You just tackled 20 solid things I deeply needed to hear, AND my Soul needed to hear!! Just the fact this popped up after I had a comment (from a post I made 1yr ago) calling me terrible for asking for prayers about my once thriving Christian best friend that has slid back into homosexuality, was Divinely inspired..I was tearing up through this entire video..I love my best friend of 30yrs and he went so far, along with myself, into being dedicated Christian's..but sadly at the end of 2018 he backslid into homosexuality..he moved in with his bf, cut ties with his Church (that he has been incredibly dedicated to for well over a decade), cut ties with basically anyone not supporting him in this choice..I'm the only person he hasn't..he knows where I truly stand, and since then I've been in the middle of an extreme tug-of-war over this..he abandoned everything he once stood firmly for, and now goes to his bf's Church (because it's a progressive Christian Church) and just associate's with his bf's family because they ALL keep telling him he's right AND God is fine with their relationship..this has ripped his family apart too..his grandfather was the preacher of his old Church and his whole family participated in it..but since they've only invited him to functions and not his bf he decided to immediately abandon them 🥺 I've had some monstrous hurdles to jump in my life but this is definitely one where I'm getting *constant* whiplash! I've never stated I approve of this, have NEVER invited his bf to my house, but have just had to continuesly pray..I love him dearly BUT I KNOW he's bringing on a world of pain to himself for ignoring what he doesn't want to adhere to..and he knows the lengths I've gone to to avoid the snare of sexual sin..I use to manage a porn store, was pansexual and had no problem going to gay bars, drag shows, no problem in indulging in drugs..God turned EVERYTHING around for me! And after a deeply Spiritual experience with God almost 10yrs ago, right as I was about to take my life, I TURNED FROM EVERYTHING!! In my moment of utter dispare God did something that was waaaaay beyond what any psychologist could explain..it went beyond the power of mankind! At that moment I broke off my sinful relationship and devoted myself to God, studying Theology, specifically Biblical Eschatology, and religious studies..I changed everything, giving up drugs, even caffeine, TV, and turned from my social butterfly life, all to put space between me and the world..he saw this first hand and KNOWS what I've gone through, the EXTREMELY hard choices I had to make..even just burning my handmade native American objects (I'm Cherokee) was soooooo tough BUT my friend gave me strength and encouragement..and BECAUSE we were once a part of a HUGE gay scene, we gave each other strength in taking a stand! He preached to his gay friends for a decade about how God can change you, even when it comes to homosexuality..so much work was put into that message..and now BECAUSE HE FOLDED all our gay friends point to him and say "see, it's impossible not to turn from homosexuality and God accepts us exactly the way we are" 🥺😔 it would have been better for him never to condemn it and preach to his friend's it was wrong, because now he's the fodder they use for their argument that God knows they CAN'T change 😩 it just breaks my heart to pieces *EVERY SINGLE DAY!* This is such a burden to me, and the guidelines of what I should follow..this torments me BUT I don't want to do too little *OR* do too much..I'm walking on a tightrope here..I just need prayers of strength and prayers for my friend Ian..who I'd die for without a second thought..I've even cleared out my house numerous times so he'd have a roof over his head when he didn't have one..we've been through thick and thin, AND I KNOW that's why he won't ask if I'm accepting of his relationship or his bf..he doesn't want to lose me AND I DON'T want to lose him..but the agony inside me over his eternity IS a life or death situation for him..how can I, 1 person, hold my ground against the army of people encouraging him as opposed to JUST me..the only person in his life that WON'T embrace it?? Okay NOW I'm REALLY crying right now..he knows the Bible..there is no lesson I could teach him that would turn this around..he is most definitely not ignorant of God's Word..and yet I have no idea what this Methodist Church is teaching to try and keep him convinced he's right to do this and everyone who doesn't agree is wrong 🤷 the only argument I can think of is you citing the twisted teaching of Paul and that homosexuality doesn't apply to him since he's in a dedicated relationship..other than that, I just don't know..and if I thought I could bite my tongue I would go to his Church and see..but I just don't know what else to do..I've waited patiently for him to come to his senses for 3yrs now..and I'm still waiting..I just would GREATLY appreciate prayers and ANY further guidance on this issue..and God bless you if you made it this far in reading this 😂 I didn't mean to write a book but it just all came pouring out..I will be watching this video a couple of times over..it does help strengthen me 💜 this was a FANTASTIC teaching!! And like I said before, divinely inspired at the crossroads I'm at..I'm so incredibly happy I found your channel AND your guest was phenomenal..her words give me strength 💜 *God bless and keep you Sis* 💜 And God bless *ALL* my Brother's and Sister's out there reading this 💜

    I absolutely love this! I wanted to touch on the conversation point that Rosario is speaking on in regards to why God delights more in repentance than obedience. The Lord showed me that while obedience is absolutely a choice, repentance is using the gift of the sacrifice of Christ. You've tasted that sin, and you are now actively making the choice to turn from it, and follow the path of righteousness. I believe the Lord is showing me that it is the choosing Him He delights - much like loving and submitting to Him is the choice we all make and battle to keep. He is delighting in the choice. I hope that makes sense!

    The good news? Even our choice to obey and stand Firm in Christ, comes from Him-- "Now it is God who makes both us and you Stand Firm in Christ." "For it is God who works in us, to will and to act, according to His good purpose." - Love, because He First Loved us, (1John 4:19)

    Titus 2:11-14 For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for all people, training us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in the present age, waiting for our blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ, who gave himself for us to redeem us from all lawlessness and to purify for himself a people for his own possession who are zealous for good works.

    Alicia, I appreciated you both for your faithfulness to God and His Word. I stumbled upon this podcast and found a breath of fresh air and new motivation. Though I am not SSA, the seminary I attended came under a lot of controversy regarding the issue. They had become involved with the Revoice movement. I will be getting her book, (and yours) not merely to reach SSA'd people, but as a witnessing tool to all those I know who are unsaved and the possibly deceived. Thank you, and please keep doing this great and necessary work!
