11:53 Very common for people not experienced with THC, especially drinks or edibles, to ingest too much. THC in edible form (drinks, cookies, etc) will always have a delayed response because the compound has to be processed by the gut, liver, etc., before being released into your bloodstream. Some might not like this advice, but if you’re considering trying THC, you should always smoke it (joints not blunts) the first time so you don’t consume too much as the effects are nearly immediate. Vapes are only “safe” if they’re from a licensed and legal store regulated by a state office. Otherwise you really don’t know what’s in them. If you want to try edibles, start with low doses (5mg, 10mg) and WAIT at least an hour, hour and a half before taking anymore of you don’t feel anything. Remember you can always put more on, but you can’t take more off.

This video oddly found me the day I happened to overreact. My mother asked me to do something I wasnt comfortable with, but she needed it done. It said I was wasnt comfortable with it and she downplayed it. I got angry and reminded her that I was doing her a favor already in this matter, to which she responded she was doing me plenty of favors. Something I absolutely detest, I dont want feel like I "owe" favors. So I got even angrier. I asked myself before it went wrong it if was worth fighting this thing because it would be easier to just do it. Afterwards I understand that my reaction is a accumulation of pent up anger that popped at this random event and it wasnt in scale with what happened. I should have detached, I know how she is, it was no surprise, but I let my feelings get the better of me.

There is a difference between athleticism and showing emotions socially. When preforming a task or exercising listening skills, it is best not to get wrapped up in emotions. When concentrating is required for analytical skills, emotions should not be over emphasized. However, that doesn’t mean to be a robot with complete lack of emotional awareness because one can become off balance over time then too. When emotions are shown as a display to others, it’s a signal of hey this is how socially someone or a whole chain of people and events have made me feel. The display of emotion is misappropriate if someone’s main priority is task assessment. When someone’s main problem becomes socially based on how others are treating them, then emotions are used to give information on how one is being impacted if anyone cares. If it’s being done in a self controlled manner, like someone who already in tuned with themselves, then it’s an interaction. If someone feels manipulated by someone who is purposely showing emotions, then there was judgmental feelings already there. The one who is displaying emotion is waving a flag of being a subordinate by being vulnerable. This could be because they feel lack of control. It may be attributed as a female quality. However, do not think it is the case that women are just more emotional (most people would disagree with me on that), it adds to the problem of women being disempowered. When you take away her power of promotion for example because “women are just too emotional” it further makes her feel less control thereby making her emotional because she feels powerless. If you want true results from people, you needed an unprejudice opinion.

Underwater. That's a great example. In a frickin second your tangled you cut your air hose by accident. Learning how to breathe underwater in a panic, in a course or training exercise that you are already afraid of and don't want to be a part of. Unless your floating two inches perfectly parallel on the bottom of the ocean floor, people have no concept of what one breathe can do to change your destiny of coming back up. Cool insider points. Thanks for the excerpt. Hell of a reminder while I sit here and try to breathe. 🌊

Its putting the OODA loop into action. Would love to hear Jocko explain the OODA loop. Or, to put it another way. When you drive on the freeway, there are alot of things happening at once. You need to check your speed, watch mirrors, watch for road signs and hazards, be aware of road conditions, and your surroundings(weather, getting boxed in, hazardous drivers.) Now, navigating all that can be stressful. But, just because all of that is going on at once, doesn't mean anything bad will happen. And, you dont necessarily need to be looking for danger at every turn. But, calmly observing what in all actuality is a possible hazardous situation, ready for a minor correction if needed. Such is life.

What I like is when I'm doing something like driving and I get a mild steering oscillation and someone says "don't overcorrect". And I may or may not come back with "No shit. Really? Do you think I hadn't thought of that, jackass? Now if you've got any helpful techniques at the moment to stop the overcorrection, some sort of maxim, algorithm, or even rule of thumb, then please share it. Because what you're sharing right now is not doing either of us any good". The best way to give someone some sort of feedback and have them not overcorrect in an attribute is to tell them the range of response. Going down a superhighway you can't legally do more than 65 mph. "Well the cops will usually give you 5 mph over the speed limit" Okay fine. You get 70 mph. Technically it's still only 65, but we'll give you the 70 mph. Because it doesn't change the point. You can't do more than 70. You also can't go less than 50 mph. So your range is somewhere between 50 and 70. So this is the way to stop someone who has been busted for going more than 70 from doing less than 50. You just tell them the maximum and the minimum.

We are emotional creatures, absolutely nothing wrong with emotions or what you might be feeling at any given time or situation. There is no such thing as a wrong feeling, it's how you deal with or express that feeling that is wrong. Control your emotions or they will control you. Controlling your emotions is not being emotionless, it's responding vs reacting. When we react, we don't think, we don't take the time to assess what we are feeling and why. Responding is taking the time to think things through before opening your mouth, before flying off the handle. Reacting- "Why the fuck did you say that you pile of shit"!!! typically, with a raised voice Responding- "What you said was pretty hurtful, and I don't appreciate it". Maybe with a little inflection, after all, we are not robots. We each have a choice to make with many things on a daily basis, will we react or respond. Reacting puts your back against the wall, whereas responding leaves maneuverability. Jocko's underwater scenario was pretty good, because if you react, it will tie you in knots, and has the potential to harm others that might be in the way.

THC narrows one's FOV. If uncomfortable feelings in time are overcome, paradoxically the THC may be more of a calm, mindful type experience. I still wouldn't recommend driving under the influence of it or if one has to be very situationally aware. It does have some profound benefits and is showing increased efficacy with the veteran population for what that's worth as well. I'm a clinical social worker by trade and had specific trauma training with the VAMC for context.

Over reacting is just past trauma Find the event that trigger your disproportionate response , process it , and let go of that You will not over react again at that situation (every time it will be lesser until it goes for good) It's hard , but when you master the technique you will be free of bad emotions (so you will have a better mindset and more energy to work and live)

In mental health we hear respond, rather than react. I think that is a good way to summarize what you are saying. When something happens to me, of course it happens to me or I wouldn't even notice, I can choose to just accept it and remove myself personally from the situation. Then I can choose to response with emotion, when I determine it is appropriate.

Learning how to not dwell on are problems with are emotion is what the combat side of the military taught most of us(eventually), even if it wasn't directly absorbed. I keep seeing non combatives do the same thing over and over again: they lose their shit over petty things and have a chip on their shoulder. And civies working in gun stores. It's fucking weird seeing over emotional guys behind the counter at gun stores. Glad to hear someone talk about this, there is a lot of people that don't understand this basic concept.

Also I've been watching your videos and it's helping me all the men in my family rest their souls served and I didn't when I was getting in shape for basic I broke my hip and had to get a hip replacement so I had to give it up I lost my dad when I was 11 and then after that lost 6 of my close friends to suicide all in about 8 months I was wondering if you think im a loser for not serving cause I think I am every day I fight with depression and suicidal thoughts every day I want to ask you not as a someone who's lost how can I deal with this not some like hoorah David goggins shit by as a man a father I guess what I'm trying to say is I need help

I'm not Jocko, but serving / not serving does not define you as a person. I am also not a mind reader, but you may be experiencing misplaced guilt. Many men have been through the same thing, many feel like failures for not living up to some expectation. The mark of strength is the ability to move past your failures. Best of luck.
