Better Than The Studio Vintage?! // Marshall Studio JTM ST20H Review

Музыка

When Marshall announced their new Studio JTM, I was really curious. For the past four years I've been using their Studio Vintage as a head as well as the combo version. Though I think it's a great amp, it has some shortcomings, and I wondered if the JTM would work better for me. So in this video I'll review the ST20H and I'll also compare it to the Studio Vintage.
Note that even though I'm using the combo version of the Studio Vintage in this video, I'm basically using it as a hear, running through the same cab and with the entire same signal flow as with the ST20H. The combo version sounds identical to the head version of the Studio Vintage this way, as you can hear in this video: • Two Marshalls And A Ne...

Being that ProAudioStar was blowing out the SV20h for $999, it was a no-brainer for me. Plus, Im a humbucker guy through and through. I have plenty of clean machines with my Fender Twins...the SV was exactly what I was looking for. I decided to go with the cheaper Origin 212 cab and swap the speakers to Cremebacks. I found no downside to the mdf construction over the plywood...It sounds amazing and it looks great in the corrner of my guitar room.

Thank you for commenting, glad you liked it! For me it would also depend on what I'm playing or recording. With my rockband with two guitarists, I would chose the Studio Vintage 9 out or 10 times. But for different styles of music and/or projects where I'm the only guitar player or would need more flexibility, the JTM might do a better job.

The Creamback 65s are also quite warm with alot of bass and a bump in the low mids which gives them a woody and slightly dark tone but they have a bit of a scoop in the high mids and very sweet but rounded treble . I love those speakers but they excell with brighter amps or amps with a more aggressive upper midrange like the super lead or the studio vintage The creambacks not only have alot more bass content then say G12M25 but its also a tad loose in the bass . Its not flubby or fabby but its certalinly tight by any means and with a darker vintage type amp it can croos into flub and flab The M65 creams work extremwly well with modern marshalls like DSLs and Jvm . They are great at tameing fizzy pre amp gain. The 2 by 12 JTM studio cab sounds amazing with other marshalls but i dont think the Creamback M65s were the right choice for this amp and why a 20 watt amp needs a 2 by 12 with a pair of 65 watt speakers i cant figure out For that matter the 20 watt combo does not need a 65 watt speaker either .

Just got the jtm st20 combo on sale here in America for $1500. That $450 off the regular price. It's going back. It's not a bad amp. It does sound good. It just doesn't sound $1500 good. Maybe $800-900 good? Mine doesn't get woofy unless you dime everything, but I have to really work at it to get that woofy, muddy sound. Mine actually breaks up nicely, but it has to be cranked, and I mean cranked. That's another thing, it doesn't get nearly as loud as my fender deluxe reverb reissue? I would never characterize this as a loud amp as many have on yt. It's just not what I expected. It's not dynamic. It's not sensitive. It just sounds pleasant and breaks up nicely when you cranked it to 7+ on the loudness. The high treble has the most pleasing tone, but jumping the channels is a necessity imo. This amp could never be useful as a gigging amp. Maybe with both channels cranked? But that's not a very pleasing sound. It just doesn't get loud enough. My 68 custom deluxe reverb will pierce your ears with either channel, and both channels are very pleasing to hear regardless of the volume setting. When pushed beyond 7+ on either channel, it sounds glorious, while the marshall sounds good. It's a good sounding amp, and that's just not good enough for the price. A $2k amplifier should wow me, not make me glad I got a deluxe reverb as my main amp.

Ok, i gotta make this right. I came on here disappointed with the jtm st20c a couple days ago. Firstly, I got it on sale from GC at $450 off regular! Awesome sale right now on marshall gear guys! But, it was all scratched up, and didn't even have a power cord to plug it into the wall!? WTF guitar center? I was immediately disappointed ans skeptical. I think that clouded my initial impressions of this amp. I revisited it yesterday and what a difference a couple of days and some cooling off can make. It's a great sounding amp! I absolutely love the sound of it. The cleans are full and clear and oh so tasty! But where it really shines is cranked up to 9 on the high treble and about 4-5 on normal. Pure rock n roll delight. Mine never did get flubby or muddy. It sounded smooth and crunchy and thick. But you have to blend the channels for the best tone. It sounds a lot like my 68 deluxe reverb but better! The cleans are better and the crunch is better. It's a fuller sounding amp and the presence knob is a must with this amp. But, it was scratched all to hell and didn't even have a cord. So it went back. They gave me an additional $100 off and I ordered yet another one. Let's see how this adventure turns out. I will say it's not as loud as the deluxe reverb. Just by that much....The fender will pierce your ears or maybe it's just those high frequencies in the DR where the jtm is a more balanced tone. I would say that if i had to choose between the two....bye, bye, deluxe reverb.

Personally I haven't found that sound and feel with pedals or other amps for this price. In Europe these amps are around 800 bucks. I think my 1987x sounds better than the Studio Vintage, but it is also more expensive, next to having for instance a bigger output transformer. For the feel and sound I like, and for the price, I think the Studio Vintage does a great job. A clean pedalplatform with for instance a Wampler Plexidrive, Xotic SL Drive, Lumpy's Zoso Drive or Friedman Dirty Shirley didn't get me there like this. But taste is ofcourse subjective! I don't buy for brandname, it's actually the reason I only started using Marshalls five years ago. I avoided Marshall because I thought it was a cliché rock sound. Once I tried one I got the sound of so many of my guitar heroes I had always been looking for... maybe because they played Marshalls as well 😉

@@StevenAnthonyGuitar I hear you. Whatever works for a particular guitar player is good, as far as I'm concerned. You mentioned the bigger output transformer - that's one of the things you need to avoid the low end getting mushy or woofy - that, and BIG filter caps on the DC plate voltage supply. I haven't tried either of those amps in person, and I generally like Marshall amps. I just didn't think they sounded GREAT. Nowadays, I rely on pedals for tone. Whatever amp I plug into, I only want it to give me a clean, flat, bland response. The other day I was playing around and had the output of my pedals going straight into the effects return of a Joyo mini amp (50W into 4 ohms, but I was using an 8 ohm 10" speaker - so it was maybe 30W max). It sounded fantastic! of course, I'm not doing live gigs - just fooling around in my living room!

@@StevenAnthonyGuitar regarding prices - over here the Studio JTM head is $1750 (USD), the 1x12 stack is $2700, and the 2x12 stack is $3000. the Studio Vintage 1x10 combo is $2000, but I see used ones for around $1000. Here we also have Marshall Origin series (I think made in Vietnam?) - those are $550 for the 20W head, and an Origin50 head is $650.

@@anthonypanneton923 for the Origin, I think that's a fair price. For the Studio stuff that's way too much, not that it's not good, but you could get a P2P amp for that kind of money. For me it was the other way around: once I discovered the plexi sound with amp drive, I've been dialing back on pedals a lot. And regarding the bigger output transformer, it seems to be something I'd prefer on a JMP, but not on a JTM. But obviously one's bassy and the other's bright 😉

@@StevenAnthonyGuitar Some of that strong bass response is from the 4x12 cabinet. if you plugged that head into an open back 1x12 cab it would have a totally different sound. And ya - I think the prices here for the Origin amps are pretty good. about as low as can be found for a new, all-tube amp. although there are some no-name, made in China amps available here that are less. IF i was buying, that is... I already have a basement full of vintage Fender and Traynor amps. I used to be an electronics designer and on the side I worked on amps, my own and those of others. I have a couple boxes of NOS tubes from China and Russia and Eastern Europe from the '90s I kept on hand for repairs. Its insane what tubes cost nowadays! I used to play gigs with my '58 tweed Princeton (5W, 1x8) combo. it had (still does) the greatest tone. I'd just put a mic in front of it and run it back thru the monitors - worked great. and we were a 3-piece band. But I stopped using it for live gigs about 30 years ago - I was afraid it would get stolen. and it was getting banged up. I have a blackface Deluxe (no reverb) - all original. My '58 Princeton still has the original RCA 6V6 and rectifier tubes! I've got several old silverface Bandmaster heads (~40W) - all of those are modified - one is more like a Marshall than a Fender internally. I used to have a real plexi 100 head I bought back in 1970 - it was WAY too loud! I know what I like my guitar to sound like, and with pedals (boxes and boxes of them) I can get WAY more variety than I ever did in the old days. Play On, Mate....
