Betrayed: Elderly Care Exposed - BBC Africa Eye documentary

BBC Africa Eye goes undercover to investigate allegations of mistreatment, theft and neglect inside a Kenyan care home for the elderly.

Across Africa, the elderly have traditionally been cared for by their families. Now, with life expectancy increasing by ten years in the last two decades, many Africans are turning to care homes for help. But are elderly relatives getting the care they need?
Undercover reporters gathered evidence of mistreatment and neglect of vulnerable residents at an elderly care home near Nairobi, Kenya’s capital. Secret filming shows staff members physically mistreating residents and dumping unplated food on tables, leaving struggling residents to feed themselves. Medical conditions were also left untreated.
Africa Eye reporter Njeri Mwangi investigates the dark side of elderly care in Kenya.

Thanks for this documentary. Homes of the elderly in Kenya are run poorly from personal experience. There are 2 private ones I know where the patients are made to share personal clothes including innerwear 😢, patients clothes are stolen, not fed well etc. Just mistreatment of the elderly!!!! 1) Alpine Homes (Karen) 2) SJ Home for the Ageing (Kikuyu) Pls expose them also!

that's even for those fortunate to get to old age. its not even guaranteed to get to old age. Its a blessing. I even wonder how people will be so heartless to people of advanced age. These are people full of wisdom, and blessed to get to that stage of life. I learned the most about life when i was fortunate to care for my grandmother for 3 months. Very humbling and something you cant forget. Today she is no more, I would do that over and over if i had the chance again. i miss her every time i remember how she cared for us, until the point where she got to old age and we took over. People pls, treat our elders with dignity, respect, care and love. they are the pacesetters. cherish them.

My maternal grandmother broke her hip bone at 90. We relocated her to my retired mum's home, almost 150 miles away and she lived on a wheelchair for 4 more years before she died. Her final 4 years, though immobile, were her happiest years. She was cleaned each minute by her two surviving daughters and any grandchildren who were home at the time. She became more beautiful and her memories came back. When she died, we actually celebrated her life. We all felt we had done the best for her. My mother is now 73. If she gets down I will personally take her in. It's very African to carr for our old parents. Please don't neglect them.

My mother is 97, lives on the island of Jamaica and is in great health, thank God. She still goes to church and still lives in the family home that she purchased in 1952. She has round the clock help, but most of the time she just wants to be left alone to do her crossword/find-a-word puzzles..😀. My father died at the age of 97, twelve years ago. He married at age 90 to a 74 year old woman who treated him well until his death. The plight of these elders makes me sad. But for the grace of God, these could have been my parents.

The worst that could happen to the younger is to manhandle the older in whatever way. Children should learn to take care of their parents until their demise. Exposing them to these conditions can't be justified in any way. PCEA church should stop politicking and do what the church is supposed to do, offering hope and care to the society.

I worked with vulnerable elderly people for more than 3 years on daily basis, I learned a lot through this job, helping the helpless, helping the neglected, helping the hopeless. Many of which were only living waiting to die. We struggled to get support, because elderly care is not very common with Africans. Zororai Old People's Home (Zimbabwe) became a better place because we all lived and treated everyone like family. People who have noone to depend on, but felt like you're the only hope they have. Challenges would arise, tears would fall, but joy remained in them being able to smile. Despite having changed work environment, I cherish every effort advanced in helping the needy. 🙏

The primary school that I attended was located next to Thogoto Home for the Aged. I used to board at the school, and the girls' dorms were really close to the home for the aged, separated only by a fence. One night, I suddenly woke up because I heard many sorrowful cries, which left me disturbed. The following morning, I asked a friend of mine, and she told me that the cries usually come from the Home for the Aged. When one of the residents passes away, they cry in sorrow. That's what she said. But honestly, I felt disturbed by that.

We were a very committed team in supporting the home. we had formed a group that would visit them every month to donate food stuff and do devotions with the elderly but its sad to see that the people in charge of the place are mistreating and abusing those elderly people. madam jane is so welcoming and at first sight you'll feel that those people are well taken care off and its sad seeing what she is doing

Be careful of wolves in sheep clothing. Be accountable of the food you donate, you show the staff packing it in their own vehicles. Speak to the residents… inquire about their care first hand. This has been going on for a long time for BBC to be prompted to investigate. Fire Jane and that staff immediately.. get them replaced. Do a thorough reference and background check of who you hire. Have cameras on site. This elderly abuse is rampant even in the US by our own people.

Kenya is not getting better? Wow!! Just because the media amplify the negative doesn't mean the positive isn't there. How can you say this at the end of a documentary that showed a Nyeri woman caring for old people, and I know many like her, youth groups building for the poor, communities paying school fees for the needy, my own church visits and ministers to policemen and prison wardens. In one village there is a teacher who carries little orphans or single mother kids to school for free.... This is a great nation and getting better with time. The media never tells the positive, they always hunt for the negative because the negative sells

I affirm this daring, awesome journalist (Njeri) for great piece in journalism. She brings out unique stories that touch on the very core of humanity at the lowest and most vulnerable groups in society. Not many can dare go that extra mile to address the often ignored members of society. Njeri I from deep down my heart applaud you. You operate with highest degree of empathy and allow to be vulnerable on live coverage because you are human too. That's what competent journalits and counsellors do. Much love. On the story line, it's hard to fathom just like it's hard to judge but I hope they will find justice. The institution has tried to issue a response statement which looked ingeniously defensive but unconvincing in my humble view.
