I think this is a little extreme. You don't want to make your kid paranoid. Instead, use the old Russian saying: "Trust but verify". Teach your kid that their body is theirs and to tell you if they feel uncomfortable. Be open about sexuality with them (as long as it's age-appropriate). Make sure the institutions in your kid's life (school, church/temple/mosque, sports teams, etc) do background checks on people and have a system in place demanding that violations get reported to the cops. Do all the above precautions, but let the kid live their life. Let them run around and play. Let them explore. Let them be kids.

Had a friend that was Catholic, her sister became a nun and she (the nun) told her sister when she became pregnant by the priest. Then my friend went on to tell me they buried the baby under the cathedral ... and that there were many babies buried under the cathedral. All I could do was cry and my heart was so broken, I NEVER went to church again!!!

Just unreal how literally every single system where you give humans power becomes this. Police , politics , religion , justice system , all the most gross examples of abuse in human history.

The most shocking betrayal were that of many of the parents of these abused kids. I experienced first hand of it. After telling my mom about attempted rape by a Buddhist clergy, I was told to keep quiet and forgive him. My mom knew the clergy had past history of attacking teenage girls, nothing happened. She never spoke of it again. I was sure if i didn’t learn karate since age 11, “attempted rape” would have been “rape”. The betrayal still had a profound effect psychologically, at 15, i attempted suicide. I experienced 2 years of clinical depression and it took years of therapy to get over it. It’s not just the Catholic Church but all religious institutions. Rather than expelling the monks and defrocking them for breaking the rules as the Buddha had decreed 2500 years ago, they are allowed to move to another temple. It’s incredible how people want to cover up these incidents and pretend it doesn’t happen. The victims are shamed and told to pretend it didn’t happen. Sexual abuse of a child is the most profound betrayal one can experience. It psychologically more harmful and sinister than anything a child can experience.

L V You are right! This exhists in all religions. God does not support these religions. The monies of peoples they give to these religions, even after informed of abuse over decades + decades of children telling, the brain washed followers helped hide the stories. Even the parents of children that were assulted. Afraid because been told they were too powerful to harm them or be believed, or the powers that be in the judicial of those countries were protecting religious leaders, prob paid the judicial off.

As the only non-catholic family , in a solid Catholic neighborhood, I always questioned the fact that the Catholic Churches always needed money , they said to pay for building and utilities. Problem with that is. : most of these church buildings were built 20 years before I was born. There should have been no mortgage left to pay !! And heaven help you if you didn’t make a donation when they passed the plate which were baskets on long poles so they missed NOVODY. in my Lutheran church on Sunday morning, the donation plate was passed from one person to the next by hand and if you couldn’t contribute , NO BIG DEAL. when we built our building about 10 years after we formed the congregation , we had the money to pay cash for everything. We owned it , FREE AND CLEAR so, monthly we just had utilities and the salary of the minister and property taxes to pay. Funds were there to help the community in case of emergency from us , but not the 4 Catholic Churches.

I was brought up as a Roman catholic and I never felt comfortable around Nuns and priests.I still do not trust them,and would never trust them alone with a child

In my case it was my own grandfather who sexually molested me when I was nine years old , my cousins and even my aunts and uncles had also been sexually abused but never protected us . Like others have said, it can help people just getting a form of closure and acknowledgement. On top of that money certainly can help with potential medical bills from psychiatrist visits, from anxiety medicine or whatever they have needed, and it may also enable them to pay off a loan or just help them live an easier life if they're so psychologically damaged that they're unable to work full time or at all.

I watched a documentary over 30 years ago on abuse in a Canadian Orphanage where the abusers were simply moved to another parish. It puzzled me for years why they didn't eradicate these people, the only explanation l could come to is that they were all at it. Or just too many.

Because the circumstances rock their beliefs, and makes them question the foundation their lives were built on. They also were fearful to stand against the power of the institution of the church. Scared of being ostracized, ridiculed or embarrassed. All of which was not close to as important as standing in the cut for your child whose development depends on your protection. Sad. Disgusting. And shameful to say the very least. I have no use for religion.

All pedophiles prescribe to the guilt trip to keep their victims quiet. Many times its a repeated 'if you tell someone, theyll hate you and it gets me in trouble. Do you really want to get me in trouble?'. Phrases in this context are repeated over and over to the victim to the point the victim is terrified just as some survivors in this doc accounted for. It's a common trait in pedophiles to keep the secrets, a small part adding into what makes them so evil and vile. To inflict that kind of sense of guilt with such acts is the ultimate in manipulation.

My heart breaks for those who were abused. I pray for them but not for their abusers. These children were so wronged.

I’am an elderly woman who was raised in the catholic church and I can’t understand how anyone can stand by the pope. It’s just horrible.

The children who are abused never really "recover" I am too tired to tell all of the reasons why I know this. (Retired psychiatric technician/nurse who worked in maximum security forensic psychiatric facilities with Sexually Violent Predators and serial killers/mass murderers) as well as a survivor. The pain and sorrow...so real...the despair, the loneliness, the hatred of oneself...the "knowing" that no one will believe them. It is all so sad that they feel, that they KNOW, in their minds, that no one will believe them. The absolute shame, thinking they did something to warrant such behavior. But then the bravery of those who choose to come forward and share their stories is something to believe in. Their strength is beyond what many of us will ever know.

I am ashamed of being a Roman catholic.. I do not practise anymore.. God is my shepherd, not those awful priests... We ´ve had a scandal in my Catholic school: that was the last straw..

That the small church communities have to pay the reparations is to me the most galling fact. These priests were protected by Rome every step of the way. Rome must pay for it.

As a Soul on this earth you have immense power. Do not let anyone take your power from you, not even those that hide behind the face of their religion or politics.

It's still happening world wide. Grateful my grandfathers family left the catholic church, but have never found out why.

The more this happens the more I think that sick men BECOME Priests so they can do this to young boys. They aren’t there to be someone that worships God, and to guide you in life, but to prey on young boys.

Thank you CBC for making this ........... so I can feel again the familiar pain of those who were victimized here.... so very sad too..... The people so genuine loving people... I too was abused by a priest when I was 11 years old..... there is no justice..... none.... I did all that I could... and what I have gathered ... demystified the Catholic Church..... I look on it all with the whole Truth.... and I do feel at peace with myself. The Truth does set us free.... I am glad I did what I could.... now I rest at ease with myself. These later years I reconnected with the Faith...through 2 Holy Rosaries daily, litanies the the Sacred Heart of Jesus & the Blessed Virgin Mary and daily Mass @ home .... These that I prayed to..... have relieved me of my burdens... so I can die in Peace..... I brought it all to God... Thank You God.... 🍁🌹🍁❤️🍁🌹🍁. 🙏🙏🙏

These heroes are abused and it was so embarrassing to tell people! My heart goes out to them all! REAL MEN WHO SHOULD BE HONORED AND CALLED HEROES!

I just watched this video and I am absolutely astounded. I live in the UK and obviously there has been a great deal of controversy about the Catholic church and abusive priests - mainly in Ireland it be said, but also in the rest of Britain. Then another controversy less known about was the Magdalene laundries (once again mainly in Ireland because of the Catholic association) where young girls who had been rejected by their families for the shame of having sex before marriage or becoming pregnant. Thousands of these young girls ended up being imprisoned in these places and being used as slave labour in the laundries run by the Catholic nuns. Not only this, the girls that had babies had their babies taken from them and 'adopted' by couples looking for children. They of course were obliged to offer significant donations to the church for this so in effect the church was selling these children. The added cruelty was that the babies and girls were allowed some interaction for a significant time prior to the babies were sold, so strong maternal bonds were formed and then suddenly the child was gone. So I now see similar things going on in other countries - it is an epidemic of abuse. The Vatican is doing everything it can to avoid its responsibility in these matters. Yet it holds direct responsibility - it knows this type of abuse has been going on for 100's of years and has done everything it can to avoid any culpability. It is long overdue that the Vatican is brought to justice. Further, I cannot understand how any of these poor people who had their trust in this establishment so abused and damaged, remain faithful to Catholicism !! The disgusting actions of the Priests whom represent the faith were not punished as they should have been by the authority of the higher church, but quite the opposite, they were sheltered by them.

Unfortunately, I don't think that would help. Rape and pedophilia has sexual undertones, sure, but its all about power. That's the primary driver. Perpetrators of these horrific crimes are driven by the power they feel over the victim. Until you take that power from them and give it back to the victim, this will sadly continue.

@Dave Bronstein I agree. Even to the point that married clergy can still abuse but I think getting rid of the vow all together and allowing the priests who join the church to be average normal men of God in a sense. The vow does not get them closer to God.

This is heartbraking 😔. I'm from a catholic country, most people don't belive this abuse is real. It makes me sick. Open your eyes and save the children.

My heart goes out to all those victims at the hands of these evil filthy priests, they don't serve God they serve themselves and the Vatican protects them

I'm 75 & my Grandfather on my Mothers side of the family was a carpenter, he was called to tear down an old church & he said in between the walls were bones of babies in the walls. So, I knew of this at a young age. My grandfather who was a devout Catholic left the church & the rest of our family also left the church we as children left the Catholic school & went to public schools. So I believe these accusations of the priest of the. Church. Sad huh!!! I had a half sister & my father's grandfather on my father's side of the family went to the church & took her out of the church she told a stories of abuse in the church & begged my Grandfather on my father's side to come & get her. Which eventually he did. This is so so sad I'm glad they are finally ackknowledging this. My family is all gone now that this effected but I had known this from a very young age.

The entire Catholic system is a scam.

I was raised Roman Catholic and remained a staunch Catholic until the late 1990's. It took me at least 5 years to get over the indoctrination from the youngest age, but I'm so glad I escaped. I don't recall ever being victimized by a priest, but the entire power structure of the church is overwhelming, and I have the utmost sympathy with those who didn't have a way to escape the abuse. I am entirely happy being out from under the thumb of religion of any kind. I direct my life according to my own conscience, and don't need a "spiritual leader" to tell me what to do.

So heartbreaking. The Vatican should be forced to compensate these men very well financially, although such compensation will not erase their pain, fear, and in some cases self-loathing.

Open up, speak to people, if this happened to you! I have two close friends who lost siblings through suicide after sexual abuse in childhood. Both have now gone public with their stories, and the reactions are amazing. You have no idea how many people around you have probably suffered one form or another of sexual abuse and have been carrying this load by themselves. I have my own story.. it's "harmless" in comparison, but I had to turn 50 before I told anybody. Which goes to show that's it's never really "harmless", I guess.

Agree. There is more sexual abuse and/or rape going on than people can comprehend. People are afraid due to threats made, or the person is an authority figure. Or they worry what people will think of them. It's not just in the church either. And it's not just done by strangers. It's done by dates, father's brothers, uncles, next door neighbor, babysitters, bosses as well. People who haven't been victimized just do not understand why victims wait years to come forward. Nothing is worse than telling and being blamed or told to keep it quiet.

The answer, as in many similar situations with corrupt organizations and individuals is to vote with your feet. Leave those who abuse or cover it up and let them flounder with no church members. Let God decide their fate.

Why is this abuse so common and almost acceptable among Catholic priests?

The first lie is calling someone who is NOT YOUR ACTUAL PARENT FATHER OR MOTHER!!!!! This changes the brain n puts the parental authority on someone other than YOUR ACTUAL PARENT. the next problem is everything else.

The sins of the Vatican are so large and so encompassing, that I believe they were a pagan organization from the beginning. Many believe them to be the great harlot spoken of in the book of revelation. Anyone from any organization who causes such harm to these little ones, the Bible's says it would be better for them to have a mill stone around their neck. The sad thing is the royal commission was only done for crimes within the church. There are just as many pedophiles who are politicians, judges, police, child care workers teachers scouts etc. But no complaint was accepted from other areas. Of course pedophiles will be attracted to jobs where they can easily have access to children and community trust.

@toneman335 : As much as the church sometimes, if not often, is despicaable, I wouldn't say that it's demonic. "Corrupt" surely is more fitting. Notice that this CBC report says nothing about satanic practices, which some clergy have practiced. but not all or most of them. Etc.

i'm fairly certain that calling it demonic would be an insult to demons if they were real. *i* would like to see them taken down under RICO laws as an organized crime organization ("diocese tax" is probably close enough to "street tax" to start with, and given all that paperwork showing cover-ups/moves/buy-offs/possible murder cover-ups/etc. i'd say they qualified as "organized".)

The Vatican sends these priests to the various parishes and yes, they should pay. I felt so badly that that poor parish was forced to pay a sum like that. Not when you see the Archdiocesan headquarters looking like the lap of luxury. The Church moves these perverts around (individual bishops, but their power comes from Roome) from parish to unsuspecting parish. So the Vatican should pay.

what boggles my mind is the number of seemingly intelligent people and professionals who still can't see this wicked, false system for what it is, and that's apart from all the sex scandals.

You guys I tried to take my son when he was three Catholic Cathedral for a service and he screamed so bad I had to go in a car and take him home and leave we had to leave we literally had to leave he was afraid of the place you didn't like it he act like he was afraid to go in there and he kicked and screamed and cried tears were all my word we left and when I think about all that I've read and all that I'm seeing now that I'm awake I'm so glad that he did that because we never went back there thank God

My God....how do You reach someone who's been abused by someone claiming to be a holy person of the CHURCH??!!!

Paisley Carol, never give up on your Heavenly Father. ❤Pray to The Father yourself. Ask Him to lead you as to what to do. Take heart. ❤Your personal relationship with Christ is Yours. No one can take that or change it. He will lead you. Read your Bible and Trust it and ask The Holy Spirit to guide you. He will. There are churches who prosecute to the full extent of the law when such things happen. I know bc it happened at my church and our Pastor brought every charge possible. That man is in prison now. "a rotten tree will produce rotten fruits" And the Catholic church is such a tree. Today, one month after the first 2 lines just above, I'd like to elaborate for clarity. Every orchard has rotten trees. And there are many orchards. A rotten tree whilst not bearing good fruit, Still might spend shadow for many, But the rotten fruit forced onto the innocent, Will cause great harm. From whatever orchard/denomination this rotten fruit might come from. Very often such a bad fruit originates from a tree growing wild, outside an orchard. But the expectations of an orchard is, That it produces good fruits. Sadly, we are very disappointed if we're getting hurt. May the Almighty keep harm far away from us. Specially from the vulnerable and small ones. And heal the wounded. Amen.

Unfortunately it's not just the Catholic church, adults with power over vulnerable people (like children) have always abused their power by physical, emotional or sexual abuse. I'm not saying everyone with power but it's very, very common. No one says it, but we should look at the nature of being human. And parents should watch over their children extremely carefully...and when u have a large family that's much harder to do. Poverty adds to the vulnerability of course, but really people are vicious and unpredictable. I owned a daycare for 30 years and have realized in my workers and myself (+ many parent's) the tendency to want to dominate and frighten the kids into better behavior. Even if u know u 'shouldn't' feel that way. Workers or religious leaders who work with kids should have cameras on them at all times. Parents, NEVER leave yr kids alone with adults who you do not know extremely well. The abuse they suffer can destroy their lives. If u must leave them to work, use daycare sparingly. I personally believe it's never entirely safe. Sexual abuse is not the only destructive behavior...it's just more sensational and here in our country (U.S.) puritanical ideas are alive and well. So the stigma around is overblown.

You need to read "Maria Monk", an autobiography of a nun who fled her Nunnery! They have pulled down old Nunneries all over Europe & skeletons of newborns sealed in the walls from Priests & Nuns cohabitations. Maria Monk says the Nuns were to smother the newborn at birth, then the Priest gave them the last rites which will send them straight to heaven. In her Nunnery, the corpses were placed in a lime pit in the basement in Quebec. After Monk's book came out, other Nuns wrote their own autobiography. Infanticides, thousands of them & the nuns couldn't refuse the priests since they were said to represent God, himself.

Anti Catholics have often learnt a thing or two, much against their will, that turns them into anti Catholics. Myself for example. Being an anti Catholic does not turn one into a bad researcher or a liar. Often the abuses of the church turn one into a good researcher.

I'm surprised that guy still goes to church every Sunday.... Like I was just sexually abused by my extremely religious catholic mother, and I get an uncontrollable rage response to anything christian. Because I can't forget how it was used as a tool of abuse, as well to keep me quiet and compliant. Even if my mind is able to make the separation... the PTSD I have from it isn't. Just watching this documentary was hard for me even.... And his sexual abuser was a priest, and it happened in the church itself.... like. Wow.

There was a movie released in 2015 called Spotlight. A true story of how the Boston Globe uncovered a massive scandal and cover-up into cases of widespread systemic child sex abuse by the church, which funnily enough, led right back to the Vatican. Growing up I never felt comfortable in churches, now I know why. My heart goes out to all the victims past and present.

That priest with grey hair and glasses is one of them I’ll bet! He make me cringe!

Be careful who you trust... You never know what in someone else mind and what they are up too unless you really know them. I feel bad for the victims, they are scarred for life and money won't fix their pain...

I remember watching when Ratzinger slapped that reporter. I said to myself, Remember that name. And then he became Pope! I was horrified. Bishop Brian Dunn just sounds like another politician.

The Vatican needs to cough up the money and also take responsibility for their priests rampant child sex abuse. Criminal reparations/charges are needed.

Years gone by ....but still can see pain in their eyes.. Needs courage to speak up.God bless 🙏

Priests at one time were allowed to marry but it cost too much for the church to support so many families. Well this works so much better with payouts to victims and the destruction of the church and its reputation. Well Done!

They were abused themselves. Everyone who was abused doesn't abuse others, but those that abused were themselves abused. It doesn't justify it, but that's the this works. Check out any addicts, obese people, they have serious childhood trauma and abuse.

And what is the money going to make these abused people any difference? Their lives have been chattered! Shame and emotional pain caused will never be solved. These criminals should be punished for what they have done. Stop them from hurting other children, there are ways to do this why doesn't society do anything about it?

I love how they have a cool 13 milli to pay out.
