The Hidden Children of the Catholic Church | Foreign Correspondent

It’s been an open secret for years. Catholic priests fathering children in breach of their vows. After suffering in silence and shame for years, those children are speaking out, demanding answers and recognition from Rome.
Like other scandals it has faced, the Church has swept the issue of children of priests under the carpet.
“The church operates on a system where if it can ignore you and hope you go away, then it will do that”, says one former advisor to the church.
The children of priests have long suffered in silence and shame, their mothers pressured to keep quiet and keep the secret.
We follow the story of one Australian woman who discovered in middle age who her father was, and who’s determined to find out more.
“I remember thinking I can’t tell anybody. I now have to carry a secret”, she says. “Over a period of time, I realised…I can’t keep the secret and I need to step forward
Reporter Lisa Millar heads to Ireland to speak to the man who’s bringing this issue out from the shadows into the light.
From a village south of Dublin, Vincent Doyle, whose father was a priest, is bringing these children together for the first time, helping them find a voice and a pathway to answers.
When Vincent Doyle launched a website for the children of priests, the response revealed the global nature of the problem. His website got hits from 175 countries and he estimates there are ‘ten thousand children of priests, that’s conservative’.
A woman who is researching the experiences of children of priests found startling similarities between their problems and the problems suffered by victims of clerical abuse.
While the Irish clergy have responded to pressure and come up with a plan to deal with it, Rome has been slower to react.
“It’s evidence priests are not doing what they’re supposed to be doing”, says one long-time Vatican watcher. “… any time the Church leadership is confronted with that, the knee jerk reaction is to recoil and not be fully transparent.”
In Rome, Lisa Millar goes to the centre of Catholic power to find answers. They now acknowledge the problem, but secrecy rules.
“I want the Pope to say the words ‘children of priests'. That’s what I want and that will just be the beginning”, says Vincent Doyle.
“I think it will be the next big story that is going to shake, and quite rightly shake, the church”, says the former advisor.

@@sandraschneider8438 This occurred in the mid 70's. This conversation was brought about because my mother and I had a difference of opinion on the 12 apostles. Some of them were married with children. I told her that Christ would not have had the apostles leave their families to poverty to follow Christ, but to go home to also support his family. This led to the following discussion. I knew a nun, Sister Katherine in USA, who was later trained in Canada, to help with catholic marriage annulments tell me this fact. She was allowed church papers to read that were held from public. A very long time ago, priests in Europe were allowed to marry. Why was the policy get changed to this celibacy life? She told me because if the priest died, the church had to deal with the priest's wife and children still living in the rectory. The Catholic Church did not want to financially support them, but it was difficult to throw them out and make them homeless in the eyes of the public. So the Catholic Church then started to outlaw priest marriage to bypass the problem.

My Grandfather at the age of five was put in a Catholic orphanage by his Aunts after the death of his parents. He was schooled to become a Priest. He ran away when he was fifteen. He told me that most of the children there were fathered by priests and the pregnant Nuns were also there. Hidden from the outside and taking care of the babies. The things he learned there turned him against the Catholic religion and even more so as he grew older and studied the King James Bible. He had a close relationship with the Lord and was extremely knowledgeable of the Word. Grandma was the kindest person I have ever met and you could tell just being around her that she was filled with the Holy Spirit. I am very blessed to have had them in my life and to be shown how a child of God lives.

I feel this post was not about assigning blame to either party for the creation of the child. The point was that when the priests broke their vow of chastity (a vow which the mother did not make, btw, regardless of whether or not she knew the mans occupation), he did not confess his sins and acknowledge and accept his offspring. Plenty of men have gotten women pregnant after one time, or by accident, or with someone not quite ideal, and yet still stepped up to the challenge of fatherhood. The shame these poor people feel would have been far less if they were not “dirty little secrets”. Rarely do the sins of our parents, before they were our parents, fill us with shame. Had these men stepped up and helped raise their offspring, had they acknowledged their part and swallowed their pride and did the right thing, I doubt there would be so much pain. Drama and gossip, yes, but not pain. Shame indeed.

The whole issue of celibacy wasn’t about priests living and focusing solely on spiritual matters. It was all about money and control. It’s cheaper to support one guy who only has the church, than to support one guy and his family where his loyalties may be divided between his family and the church. It was a ruthless and cruel decision that has hurt countless people for centuries. I believe it was also one of the main reasons for the Reformation by Martin Luther in his opposition to the Catholic Church. He was a monk himself, but married a nun who believed the way he did.

I totally believe this because my old landlady, a very devout Catholic, used to scrub floors at one of these nunneries when she was a teenager. She was always told to never enter this one door off the main hall where she worked. She said one day her curiosity got the better of her and she peeked in. She saw several nuns in habits, breastfeeding infants. Also, just listen to Sister Charlotte's Testimony. The truth is so raw and painful I wept for that sweet lady. Worth hearing for sure. They do what they want. My father and uncles were all altar boys and all of them were molested. They should be allowed wives or male mates if that is what they wish instead of hurting so many and destroying lives.

The Catholics also took a statement by Paul in the New Testament out of context and ran with it to make that rule. He thought celibacy was better than marriage, but only for himself. He didn't think it was right for everyone. In fact, in another part of the Bible, it says that it's wrong to forbid marriage. You can only go against nature for so long. My great grandmother became pregnant by a priest in Turin, Italy. The Church promptly removed the priest and sent him to another province. This poor teenager was sent away as far as her family could to Calabria at the very bottom of Italy. I don't know where she lived but when my grandmother was born she was an outcast because she was illegitimate. She had no friends and could not go to school. When she was a teen, I don't know how she did it but got a boat to Ellis Island. Some years later she emigrated to Canada. These were the two bravest women I ever knew of. Unfortunately, I never got all the information from my Grandmother because she never learned English. My Mom died young and I never got anything from her. Priests should be held responsible. Why a church would disallow the most holy, beautiful, and rewarding experience in life, that of being a parent, is ridiculous, unnatural, and unhealthy. God places such importance on families that to deny that blessing to priests is quite unholy. The Catholic church MUST allow their priests and nuns to marry. Moreover, children DESERVE to be loved and raised by loving parents, so if the priests father a child they need to be accountable for their indiscretion and help take care of the child.

I agree. But if they allow priests to marry AND keep their current nonsense about not allowing birth control, they’re going to have married priests with huge families which is definitely something the church doesn’t want to face or pay for. Right now, a parish priest is paid about $25,000 a year which also includes a house for him to live in. (My priest used to make extra money by giving tours of the Holy Land.) If he was married and had a kid every other year, he wouldn’t possibly be able to survive on $25,000 a year. Also, there’s absolutely no way his wife would be able to have a career of her own if she’s constantly pregnant and dealing with newborn issues. For the church to FINALLY admit they need married priests, they need to allow birth control and much higher wages. They also need to recall that Peter (The Rock - the foundation of the Catholic faith and the first pope) was married. Back in the day, celibacy wasn’t enforced. Pope Alexander VI (Rodrigo Borgia) had three illegitimate children he claimed. Many parish priests had “house keepers” with children that looked very much like the priest. 😉

The Catholic church is a very large church covering many countries and cultures. It has never been dogma that priests must be celibate. Dogma is the absolute basics of the faith that you will find in the Nicene Creed. Even now it is a case of church discipline. So the ancient church for the first 1,000 years when it was one (before the split between the Catholic and Orthodox) had two languages used in liturgy, Latin and Greek. The eastern parts of the church used Greek and the western Latin. Both Latin (Rome) and Greek (Constantinople/Byzantine) churches had married priests. When the church split, between the West and East, most of the western church used Latin, but some still used Greek in their liturgy. Eventually the western church decided as a matter of discipline that its priests would be celibate but there has always been exceptions for those churches with Eastern rite traditions. Even now, the Pope can waive a man's requirement to be celibate and will allow the ordination of married men. Many Anglican and Episcopalian ministers that converted, were married and were ordained Catholic priests were given a dispensation. They can only be married once. I believe in the Orthodox church only celibate priests can become bishops.

As a child raised without my dad, I know how hard it is to want to know your biological. Also it is easy to exonerate him even as a hero. I finally had contact with my dad later in life and I was able to meet him as an adult; two adults meeting for the first time. So, this story is interesting and a bit confusing because of some of the reactions to the news. As an example, how is Linda’s realization of learning of her dad is really her adopted father, and this is called “devastating?” I think her adopted dad was wonderful in adopting her as his own. Look at her biological father. That is the devastation. He was a trusted man. Watching her radiate as she says he was a “charmer” is very sad, in my opinion. This is an example of making her father a type of hero. But in all honesty, he sounds more like a predator. He had sex with a girl twenty years his junior…and he was a priest. That doesn’t sound like charm to me. This was a bit confusing to see. Much respect to the Irish bishops, however. I lived in Dublin years ago and I am glad they are at least acknowledging this issue, although on a small scale. And Linda really exposed the true nature of this issue: secrets and lies birth shame. And shame is the debilitating reality attached to children with absentee fathers, especially when those fathers are esteemed as godly men. Ugh! Horrible!

The flesh is weak .. i read that somewhere but the torment of seducing a dashy priest I wouldn't wish on the devil himself .. Attending mass where only fantasies keep playing .. having communion while trying to have a sniff of how he smells .. Going to confession just to hear his voice 😇😇😇 😂😂😂😂 We don't live in a perfect world good men are locked up without regard of a woman like me 😎😎 Pray for me 😜😜😜 and the dashy priest 😇😇😇 that we happily elope to live somewhere where the church won't find us and have lots of kids 😶😶😶

God himself said:. " Isn't good for man to stay alone." Man is not meant to stay in celibacy. That contradicts their human nature. Celibacy is a rare gift not granted to people simply because they feel they want to serve God. The church stubeeness is the cause of all these problem.

Just a question, why Not say: THAT YOUR FAITH IN GOD REMAINS? Why is your faith in a denomination? Why is your faith in a man made religion? Being catholic is nothing to be "proud" about, and I do Not say this in bitterness. Either way, it is ESSENTIAL to Separate GOD AND ONE'S PERSONAL RELATIONSHIP WITH HIM, MADE POSSIBLE ONLY THROUGH THE ALL SUFFICIENT BLOOD OF JESUS- From any religious organization. Take Care.🌹🌺🌻🌹

Just remember the reason for Catholic priests being celibate has never been about religion, rather it is about money. If a priest has children, then the children inherit the money and possessions of the priest when they die, not the church. And the Priest will spend money on the children and not give it to the Church. The Catholic church has always been about money.

What's in the dark always comes to light. The Lord is my witness. He saw what happened to me - I knew God was with me when I was a little girl. Using religion, and positions of power to abuse children is a direct crime against God Almighty. I know for a fact that none of them will get away with it. I used to hide on the roof, at the Catholic school/church I went to and sit with the pigeons alone. The pigeons befriended me and talked to me - We looked down on the playground together from the roof, the pigeons and I, watching the Nun's and their mean looking faces. They used to make me hold my hands out and hit me with rose bush thorns until my hands were bleeding - I would look up at the roof and could see my pigeons watching and witnessing the abuse, I knew them all by the way they looked and the way they sounded, they were all different. I knew that they were all witnesses, sent by God and when they flew away they were flying to God's house and reporting everything they witnessed. I recently discovered a video about Tesla - when he lived in a hotel in New York and befriended the pigeons. His telephone lines in the hotel were tapped by the F.B.I. so he used the pigeons as his messengers ... The Lord is my witness and the pigeons were my messengers - so fear not - they will all be held accountable, judged by God Almighty and will pay for their "secret" crimes!!!

The wickedness and unwillingness of man to see and accept the truth was handled with a flood by Jesus In the time of the end such as now where everyone is being deceived into thinking Sunday is the sabbath of Jesus, volcanoes and earthquakes will continiously take effect as they are now, except they will get worse and worse. PEOPLE HAVE LITTLE TIME LEFT TO MAKE USE OF THE BRAIN GOD GAVE EACH PERSON AND NOTICE THAT WHERE YOU ARE STADING RIGHT NOW. ARE YOU BEING BRAINWASHED INTO WORSHIPPING ON A DAY YOU KNOW NOTHING ABOUT, BUT MERELY DOING SO BECAUSE SOCIETY DICTATES THIS, OR ARE YOU APPLYING ALL YOUR MIND AND THOUGHT INTO KNOWING THE EXACT SABBATH DAY, THE CORRECT HONOUR TO GOD BEFORE JESUS IS ABOUT TO RETURN. Because my dear friends. God did not have a church which was following the masses like sheep, it was a small congregation. Every church following the Sunday movement is merely doing so because they following the Pope and his Sunday agenda and has NOTHING, and I mean nothing to do with God and the return of Jesus which is at the door. Wake up people and stop believing what is being fed to you and educate yourselves alone to establish are you exactly where you need to be for the return. Sunday = Pope's worship day!
