Beta Xtrainer 250 vs 300 review - Is there a use?

Today on Hard UNduro we do a head to head ride review between an Xtrainer 250 and an Xtrainer 300, both 2024 models. We will show you what the differences are, and why you might want one over the other. Both Cross Trainer models are the same except for a few engine specs. As always you will get a perspective from Al as a 5"9 - 70kg (155lbs) rider, and Furz as a 5"11 - 90kg (200lbs) rider.

    I think it would be better if Beta made a 200 Xtrainer instead of a 250 (like Reiju does with the Ranger), and tune the 200 for low down power like the 300 (so you would have a softer option for newbies and older down-sizers like myself). That would give a real reason to have 2 capacities. It's great that you have tested both together, Beta themselves don't seem to publish anything about the relative character of the 2 bikes.

    Great Video, I have a 250 Xtrainer and I thought the same about the lack of low down grunt, but loved how nibble it was and forgiving if I made a mistake riding. I put a FMF Fatty pipe and surprisingly standard jetting and it turned into a wonderful bike, It has more power low, medium and high. I'm over 60 and had KTM's , WR450"s , Berg's but this is the best bike. I have done no other mods except the pipe and protection . If you tested the 250 with a pipe you would be surprised how it would go against the Standard 300. The 300 with a pipe has extra power but it can be too much in certain places whilst the 250 with pipe the extra power that can be used.

    After doing the modifications to the 300 we can definitely agree with you that those mods you mentioned would wake the 250 right up.     I have a 2023 Beta 300RR and an 08 Yamaha WR 450. The 300 is definitely a snappy, torquey thing. You better have good upper body strength as the 300 can bite hard at a moments notice. The WR is a torque monster and makes you feel like being shot out of a cannon but it’s not a hair trigger experience like on the Beta. Love em both! Cheers from northeastern Ontario Canada.

    G’day. That’s great to know as I have also had a WR450. Honestly the 300RR will be terrifying! We have so much control of the power on the Xtrainer but am really looking forward to the comparison. Have you ridden an Xtrainer?

    I have a buddy that bought a 300 XTrainer at the same time I did (2017). He started riding again after being without a bike for 10 years. The 300 scared the crap out of him. We ride mostly tight single track and the 300 was just too abrupt for him. He moved on and is currently on and quite happy with a WR250F. The 300 might be detuned, but it's still a 300 two stoke. If the 250 had been available he might have liked it better. BTW I love mine. Stock motor and pipe, re-sprung for my 180 Lbs with AMP Lucky cartridge forks and revalved shock. It's the best bike for tight single track bike I've ever been on (for me).

    G’day Mike. That’s interesting your buddy prefers the WR250F. I actually had one before getting the Xtrainer 300 and I’ve been loving the low down power of the 300. I found I was having to rev the WR250 more than I liked and it was still quite tall. How much difference did the suspension mods make for your Xtrainer?

    The WR takes time to rev. It doesn't have the instantaneous hit that the XT does. Even with a throttle tamer and the power valve turned in it was just too much too soon. The WR is more traditional 4 stroke power. It makes good power but you have to wind it up a bit to get there. He also added a lowering link, and a lower seat. @@HardUNduro

    So I just had the first good hard day with the reworked suspension. 40ish miles of super tight steep mountain single track. The re-spring and re-valve made a huge difference. The bike doesn't deflect on rocky uphills like it used too. It's very balanced front to rear. One of the other guys has a stock XTrainer, and he rode it and really liked it too.     You'd have a better comparison if the gearing were the same and you adjusted jetting and powervalve to get a similar luggy characteristic, but 250s do like the revs more than a 300. They like to rip more than lug, but can be made to chug along. A weight on the flywheel would help, too.

    Really good bike comparison guys. Like I thought you really have to get the revs up with the 250 in those steeper climes to prevent stalling it. For an older bloke the low down grunt is definitely an advantage. It’s good that you don’t make it to technical because I just want to get out there and not think to much……..well done. Maybe next time an open road comparison would be good.

    Thanks for watching and letting us know your thoughts. 100% spot on, we wanted to keep things simple (because we're very simple haha). We prefer to ride and feel how the bike performs rather than give a thousand statistics. We definitely try to apply common sense and keep it real. Funny you mentioned the straight line testing, we actually did it but it didn't turn out the best (pretty sure one of us cheated also in the drag race!! 🤣) They felt very similar to be honest with the 250 needing a bit more revs and hear changes.     Opinions will always vary. I own a 2023 250 X trainer, and without trying to sound rude I was waiting for you guys to ride some real snotty stuff. I know you can only ride what’s readily available when you shoot these videos (which I appreciate), but my trails are more open in some areas and super technical in others. South East QLD forestry plus 3 months of rain is a super sized mega network of challenging snot (there is way more here than I will ever be able to conquer). Only mod I have done is go up one tooth for the front sprocket - equals 3 rear smaller - so gives me around 10 klms per hour more for the road section which gets me to the trails, but it actually improved the first gear super steep climbing on this bike - I was finding I was using second for the middle of the road climbs, but now for the real steep stuff I can use first which was a little short in some sections. My background - I rode as a younger bloke then Family came first as it does with many of us. The kids are all grown up now and I’m so pleased to be riding again.. My passion is trails and techy stuff (with brapping in between of course), but I have also bought a bigger bike as well for longer highway commutes to trails further away (a 2021 DR650 with a few small mods) - It’s a hefty beast for me at 65KGs but I can actually ride 95% of the stuff I can do on the Beta (obviously it’s a horses for courses thing here though if you get that).     The 250's not sold in the USA, so for me it was a toss up between the XTrainer 300 and the 200RR. I could have gone either way. I liked the suspension and spritely feeling of the 200RR Race Edition I tried, but appreciated the size and bottom end grunt of the XTrainer. The size, more than anything else, is what led me to the XTrainer. It would be interesting to see y'all try the 200RR if you get the chance.

    Hi. It would be interesting to know why the 250 is not sold in the US. We have heard that the 200RR is quite popular so might have to give that a test. Understandably you went for the Xtrainer due the the frame size but how did the power of the 200RR race compare?

    @@Adam-hv5kp If I had longer legs and/or more confidence and experience, I'd probably have chosen the 200RR. I'd say the 200RR was indeed a more fun bike to ride. But at the same time, I am trying to ride more technical stuff and have a relatively short inseam. Being an inch or so shorter makes all the difference for confidence in the more gnarly stuff. The 200RR wasn't lacking in the motor department. There was the option of lowering a 200RR, but I didn't want to lose the ground clearance. So, the XTrainer for me. Still, that 200RR Race Edition was super fun and super capable.

    @@HardUNduro The 200RR doesn't have the bottom end grunt like the XTrainer 300, sort of like y'all experienced with the 250 in the video, but spins up super quick and makes good power on the top end. It was a more engaging ride in that it required more shifting. I think the weight is within a few pounds or a couple kilos of the XTrainer. I was actually dead-set on the 200RR but after having a bit of trouble just mounting the bike on uneven ground, I opted for the XTrainer and have no regrets with that decision. I've found that I can be lazy on the XTrainer; put it in third and ride the whole trail with a little clutch manipulation. That wouldn't be possible with the 200; it requires you to work for it and is a bit unforgiving in that regard, if that makes sense.

    Wow that’s an awesome perspective, thanks! We will try and get our hands on a 200 RR. Sounds like a lot of fun but you make a really good point that just one inch less of seat height does make a world of difference to technical riding. Haha I too seem to put the Xtrainer in 3rd gear and leave it there all day.

    Install a 13 tooth sprocket on the 250 then compare them...

    That's a good idea. I've found changing the sprockets to make a huge difference, we did this on all.our other bikes. Our hands were tied a bit with this 250 due to only being loaned the bike from Beta for a day. Maybe we won't tell them next time haha. Also we love your content and channel. Thanks for watching.     I would love to see your opinion and comparison of the 300xt and a sherco300sef with a recluse auto and see what u like better for an older man enduro.

    250 is made to rev faster, as its undersquare, thats why i only buy the 250, 300 just makes things to easy

    The 300 does make things very easy. For anyone wanting to learn or improve we think the 250 would be better also. Do you have an Xtrainer 250?
