I absolutely vouch for this method! I used to use a razor blade but after I slashed my finger I found this video and it works. I use a teaspoon with a narrow edge. Just put glasses on because sometimes bits will fly up. Thank You For Your Wisdom!

As a ginger fanatic I’ve tried many different ways to peel ginger. IMHO using the spoon is one of the most difficult ways to remove the skin. Lots of scrapping that quickly leads to hand discomfort. Using a peeler with some strategic knife cuts is the fastest and easiest on the hands based on my experience. You do waste a little ginger flesh but just a small percentage of the root.

@LouieLandsCandyTreat Even I thought the same tbh.. but it does gets peeled off easily with spoon. The only thing is if it's hard to peel off the skin with spoon, just soak the ginger in water for a couple of mins( or an hour depending on how fresh the ginger is)

I like to peel a lot of ginger (3-5 roots at a time) then chop it all up in in food processor, spread it out thin on a parchment lined cookie sheet, freeze it then break it up into a container and store in the freezer for quick and easy use.

you know, if you don't throw away the ginger peel it's not a waste to peel it with a knife. you can dry the ginger peel, then blend it into powder and store it in a jar. you can use the powder for teas, soups, stews etc. :)

Excellent! I didn't really expect it to work, but I paused the video and tried it. It worked far better than I expected. For what it's worth, I used a spoon made with thin metal, so the edge was sharper than most of my spoons. Thanks for posting this!

I never thought of peeling the ginger before your video on the topic. Always added it with its skin on to my teas. I didn't add ginger to other cooking so never had to think of clearing its skin off. I did negligible cooking😌 I have been using this trick after your video & ginger feels nice now. I don't know if this additional step or due to something else but I have started to use ginger way less than I used before on a daily basis. 🤔 I hardly add ginger to my teas now. But I remember to use this trick whenever I do...🙂 Thanks

Ginger must be eaten with its skin on to get the full benefits of its warming characteristics. Once the skin is removed, it changed into a cooling food and defeated the purpose of using ginger in your cooking. Try boil a cup of ginger tea with the skin on and another with the skin off. Drink them one hour apart, you will feel warm with the skin on and the skinless one will not warm you up. If mother nature wants you to have skinless ginger, it will grow skinless ginger for you. This applies to many fruits and vegtables.

An Asian cook showed me a “trick” of sorts with ginger. All you really want out of the ginger is for it to flavor your recipe. Simply cut off a thumb size piece of the ginger, skin and all, and either lay it in your pan or skillet in a bit of oil that you probably already have in there, or else float it in your already added liquid or broth, or even do both. Then at the end of your recipe, simply fish out the ginger piece and toss it. No peeling required. Also, unused ginger chunks that you buy can be put in a small baggy or wrapped in plastic and then put in your freezer. No more wasted ginger and you’ll have it whenever you need it.

Very good tips! Peeling ginger is mostly required in South Asian recipes where the ginger is often ground and added to marinades or curries. In these cases the peel is not desirable. It is also often used as a garnish in the julienned form( peeling preferred here too) I dont bother peeling for Asian recipes either,
