BEST way to monitor power usage via Zigbee - Zemismart SPM01
Ғылым және технология
Today we will look at how you can monitor your home full power usage with Zemismart Zigbee SPM01 power monitoring device. There is also 3-phase version, if your home requires it. But you can also use it to monitor each circuit breaker you have in your home - for total power monitoring control
We will also compare it with Shelly EM and see what's better for energy monitoring in your home.

I brought one of these, and very happy with it. I also emailed their team with a few questions and i must say that they were very good in quickly answering openly.

Hey @@BeardedTinker , got my SPM01...I works great 🙂
I would suggest powering the device using a dedicated, low current circuit breaker or install a 3amp fuse in line with it.. This device is likely to be on fire if it fails before a 15Amp breaker trips. Not saying it would catch fire, but have to be safe when working in the main board. Thanks for the great review :) This looks like a really good alternative to Shelly, and being smaller should be easier to install than the Shelly

This is just temporary install here. It will be moved later to more permanent location. I'll do proper wiring there :D And yes, it really is good alternative to Shelly.

Would you suggest one dedicated breaker for one device or can multiple devices be connected to one breaker?

I got two of them last week and I'm happy. I'm already using another power meter (Efergy) that uses clamps and in comparison measuring the power on same cable, I feel like the SPM01 significantly loses accuracy for loads below 150 watts

Is there any firmware update for these energy meters? Newer meters are reported in zigbee2mqtt as SPM01v2 and additionally measure power factor and frequency. I don't know if it makes sense to try using the Tuya gateway for updating or it's only related to HW?
Can I measure the energy that my solar panel are producing by placing the clamp in the positive cable that comes from the panel to the inverter? Does this appliance work with DC?
Thanks for the always informative and good video. However, I have a heart pump which, I guess, needs a Zemismart with three phases. Is it as good as this one, or is Shelly better?
@BeardedTinker

I didn't test 3 phase version, but it should be same as this one here - just needs all 3 phases to be one next to the other. Shelly should be good option too. I have currently both (single phase).

@@BeardedTinker i Think the Price difference is huge , are they good in home Assisteant integration? Many thanks in advance 🙏🏽
My main problem with Shelly PRO 3EM is the size of the sensor - this is quite big advantage for the Zemismart from my perspective.

That's definitely plus for Zemismart. Although Shelly can also be used as Bluetooth proxy (I think)...

@@BeardedTinker Yes it can be. It requires additional setup but it's not complicated at all
If we have 3 phase instalation, and we are interested only for total consumption, maybe we can put all phase 3 wires through single phase sensor? Is there enough space for 3 wires in this sensor, and would this work?
@BeardedTinker
10 ай бұрын
I don't think it's possible - not just because you wouldn't be able to fit all 3 phases through the hole, but even if you could it still wouldn't work (but I may be completely wrong here too :) )
Do you know when ZHA implementation will be available? Otherwise I have to add another coordinator with Z2M what I would like to avoid in case of complexitiy.

Could you please explain how to integrate with home assistant local tuya, SPM02_WiFi three phase version?
@BeardedTinker

No idea - I try to avoid Tuya WiFi products. I only have one and for that I'm not using local Tuya, but Tuya local. With upcoming changes to developer accounts, we will see how this will work out.
I had hope to be able to put it on a cord for watching machine or oven or water heater but nope it's the classic hall sensor on 1 phase only clamp. 😅
@BeardedTinker

Yeah, it works only with one phase/line...
5 sec. is better , but fixed time is not the best and still to question why I could not get more readings like every 2nd second. The 3 wire / phase one looks far better considering the price of 32$ versus 59$ and the 2 power supply cables for each of the 3 devices will cause a mess in the central distribution box. Electricians will go crazy.
@BeardedTinker
11 ай бұрын
It's not that bad in terms of price - comparing to some others, this is really good option. In terms of wires - yeah, as it needs reference power for each phase, it's mess of cables :D

For the Shelly EM, at least in combination with MQTT you can configure the update frequency. It isn't exposed in the UI, but you can change the setting by navigating to a specific url that includes the correct parameter name and value. You'll find it easily if you Google for it. I have used this to make my Shelly EMs update every 2 seconds. That has been working reliably for over a year now, and gives me very responsive feedback in Home Assistant. Just be careful with the history feature in HA. It really doesn't like dealing with that many data points. It doesn't crash, but the graph can take a long time to load. I'm using InfluxDB + Grafana to plot historic charts.
Do you have any idea how to reset energy and produced_energy values to zero ? I have 3-phase version but I don't know how to reset it.
@BeardedTinker
6 ай бұрын
Haven't tried TBH. Does removing it from power and resting/pairing once again help? There is no command in ZB2MQTT to reset state. BTW . why are you trying to reset it? If you create Utility meter in HA you can have individual counters for days, months, quatters, years etc... They would auto-reset each cycle.
@martinsefcik
6 ай бұрын
@BeardedTinker I initially did incorrect wiring and I switched cables for two phases, so these two phases were showing incorrect values for energy until I fixed wiring. Also during this time it somehow calculated produced_energy to be 0.3kW which is also wrong as I'm not producing energy, only consuming. So I wanted to reset it to zeros because of that. Just re-paring does not reset values. Also If I tried in Zigbee2MQTT to send dev command with endpoint = 1, cluster = 0x00, command = 0 and payload = {} then it just unpair the device and does not reset values. For example this works for TuYa TS011F_plug_1 sockets with energy meter. I can reset values using this dev command, but for SPM02 it does not work. So probably there must be some different command/procedure for that.
do they have 16mm version ?

I use Tuya, Tongou brand Din versions. Not to sure if they intergrate in HA, but I imagine they do? I use 3, a 63A Mains Switch. 25A for solar invertor output and 16A for solar hotwater heater. For solar hotwater heater: Scene, IF conditions are below a certain temp and above a certain humidity, THEN condition will turn on solar hot water heater Din for a cetain amount of hours. For Control of Pool Pump: The Solar output Din used to control a, wifi switch. Scene, IF conditions, solar output above 2000Watts, THEN, turn switch on (PoolPump). They work well and have a huge range of parameter conditions to choose from for scene setting. They update per second, cost about $18usd each.

As for minimum, some said that it is not that accurate with very low consumption. So probably something in line with 10-20W should be avoided.
