Nerd Traveler hack: make a travel spreadsheet for toiletry basics to reuse for each trip. When planning for a specific type of trip where items vary, make a spreadsheet to only include those items (sunscreen for sunny locations, lotion for dry locations. Also, resupply the basics when arriving home, so, you are ready for any emergent trips. Love your videos, so helpful.

I also keep a spreadsheet for the entire year's worth of trips. It includes the dates, accommodation type, what is provided (hair dryer, coffee maker, mini-fridge, etc.), the size of the luggage/bags I am packing, the color scheme I am packing, any events (formal night, sailing tour, shows, etc.), what gets packed in my carryon, luggage, and anything I might pack in a small cooler. The last page I leave blank for notes that I make while traveling (I travel with the spreadsheet to be sure I repack everything and leave nothing behind) and when I get home. I save them from year to year. I can pretty much be packed in an hour now.

About safety pins, people who like me have worked or helped out in dressing rooms for theater plays etc know that carrying a bunch of them on yourself is a very good idea, so I do this even for myself and will attach them on the waist of my outfit even for special occasions, I have "saved" countless of ladies or even gents that way and myself as well ;)

Great tip about prepping cotton pads, I never thought of that! I’ve done smaller containers (bottles, jars and even tiny dropper bottles for a couple of serums). I’m pre-trying a shampoo bar and conditioner bar. I don’t hold out much hope for those but we’ll see. I recommend buying a TSA approved, clear container for liquids. The width of it gives you more room than a quart sized ziploc bag. I just found this out after traveling all these years since 9/11 with a ziploc and still having to check a bag because of liquids. Sheesh!

I keep a travel toiletry kit packed with its own set of everything: toothbrush, comb, razor, swabs, shower cap, deodorant, all liquids and meds, etc. I do check it before every trip (and try to check it when I get home as well) to see what needs replacing or refilling. If I run out of something on a trip and don't replace it before returning (like finishing the toothpaste on the last morning), I keep the empty container in the kit to remind me to refill it. This makes a packing list less necessary. The only thing I usually need to remember to add is my second pair of glasses, as backup. (I have two with different frames that I wear regularly so neither one lives in the kit, but I do keep a separate hard case there to remind me to pack them. When I only had one regular pair I kept the previous one in the kit for emergencies.) Why risk ending up somewhere without a toothbrush when it's so easy just to have one that stays in the kit?

Don’t forget to label those itsy bitsy containers or you’ll put your face cream in your hair. Going on a longer trip I put things like toothpaste and hand cream into really small containers to carry on the plane and to freshen up. The larger amounts are in my checked luggage.

Thank you for the advise, I’m trying to reduce plastic in my everyday life and one of the first things I did was to try solid shampoo some years now, I have curly hair though and I need a lot of conditioner which I still not found in a bar yet here in Greece. In every trip I try to minimise and try products with multiple uses. One thing I’d love to resolve is a way to organise my containers in the shower where there’s always little space to keep them, so next time I will try a mesh bag I found and see how this goes. Nice and safe trips to all 😊

Our family will travel to Southern Italy in a few weeks. Every tip/hack will help. I Iike your idea for international travel about putting liquids in a Ziploc bag inside the clear zippered bag. I will definitely use that tip. Questions: Do you put your safety pins on the outside of your bag after you go thru the TSA line? Do you need to pull out tweezers, nail clippers, manicure scissors, and medications (One dietary supplement is a soft gel.) going thru TSA line? Cathy

  • @GenxGypsy1968

I put the safety pins on at home, the TSA have no problems with those. And as for tweezers, nail clippers and manicure scissors, you can just leave them in your toiletry bag. I always carry my supplements and two small medications I take in my daily pill containers inside my toiletry bag, and I have never had an issue. I think if you have large amounts of pill bottles, or liquid medications (like insulin), it would be best to pack those separately so you could pull them out for the airport security if they ask. Hope you have an amazing trip to Italy!! 😊

In the check in luggage, can we pack our liquids in normal containers?

Yes, if you are checking your bags you can have full size bottles. However, I would suggest packing those items in at least one ziplock bag if not two. With the changes in air pressure in the baggage storage area, the liquid will most likely leak. Hope this helps!😊

When looking at travel “shampoo” bars, make extra sure it’s shampoo and not superfatted soap, unless you pack some acidic liquid. You *can* have packets of real lemon, but why bother? I used superfatted bars at home and traveling for years, and suddenly got the waxies, where my hair stayed coated. Sad, because they also were fab as body and face bars. Now, you have some bars that are actually shampoo and not soap. (Detergent, officially but who wants to think of that….like castor oil soap versus body wash) Just like any shampoo you get, you need the one that works for you and your hair! Dry hair? Moisturizing! Oily? Not moisturizing! Aging? Flyaways, but normal scalp? Go for a lighter moisturizing shampoo bar. I like HiBar for conditioner. Maybe conditioner only will work for a few days, test it at home. Lush discontinued their good shampoo bar, based in coconut oil. I have the cinnamon one and …it works. I’ll not replace it, though, it does smell great.

Great advice!! I do have thick, frizzy, "aging" hair (LOL), so finding the right ones, especially conditioner, is going to take some trial and error I'm sure! 😊

I have the same Tripped toiletry bag set and I am afraid to use the clear one for my liquids because although that is what is supposed to be used for, it is WAY bigger than a true quart size. 7:19 Have you ever be stopped by TSA using this clear bag?

I’ve used this bag extensively on domestic flights (USA) and it has never been questioned. I use a plain plastic quart bag for overseas travel.

I wonder if the TSA approved liquid bag is a new concept b/c I asked 3 different employees at IAH airport and none of them knew what I was talking about. First, I asked a staff at the airline I will be flying with who pointed me to TSA b/c she wasn't sure what I was talking about. The TSA guy had no idea and wanted to point me back to the airline. Lol Then, I asked one of the guys who works at IAH. He had no idea either. 😅

I have been using some form of a "TSA approved liquids bag" for over 5 years now. First one I bought at Walgreens back in 2016/2017 and I have had several since. I've never had a problem with any of them. Maybe they were thinking it was something the TSA was distributing?

@@GenxGypsy1968 I've been seeing videos of KZread travelers who said they picked the TSA approved liquid bags for free at the airport so I assumed the bags are distributed by either TSA or the airport. I guess I misunderstood? 🤷🏻‍♀️

@@SmileAlwayz I know the bags you are talking about. The airport I work at use to provide those bags as well. Unfortunately, I have not seen the bags since Covid hit. Many airports may not provide them anymore.

I don't care for clear TSA approved bags as they have extremely sharp corners on them .. they can cut thru flesh as easily as a pocket knife and I'm surprised TSA was handing them out!

Will I need to put my items in a Ziploc bag before putting in my toiletries bag going to Mexico or can I leave in my toiletries bag?

If you are flying from the US to Mexico, you should be just fine using the regular liquids bag and from my experience flying from Central America back to the US, you shouldn't need a ziplock bag for that either. Have a great trip! ❤️
