I have over 500,000 kilometres on this old beastly 4x4 and it was running like a top, right up until the dreaded Pink Milkshake hit me!
Long term test review of the best SUV ever, the legendary 3rd Gen 4Runner!
Traveling the backroads of the Rocky Mountains in my 1997 4Runner, I was ALMOST stranded by the dreaded Pink Milkshake!! 🤠😲😢🏔

I have a 01 Limited with 300k on the odometer, I was in the process of fixing all the weak points and had a new radiator and outboard trans cooler on the garage ready to go on when I got the dreaded pink shake. I flushed the cooling system and had no engine issues. I did a 4 full flushes on the trans (where I took the in and out lines to the cooler and put them in buckets to make sure it was fully flushed) and got about 10k miles out of that trans. By the time it finally failed I had found a used trans and transfer case on Facebook marketplace with just 90k on it. With a harbor freight trans jack it took most of a weekend to swap, been good as new since then.

Great video Jimmy! I absolutely love Toyotas! I can't see myself buying another brand. My weekend truck is the 2018 Tacoma , TRD Off Road Double Cab 4x4. The thing is a beast! I will never sell it. As I said before , about my Rav 4, that thing was basically unbreakable. Having 500k on your truck is unreal reliability! If there is an apocalypse, I am definitely choosing a Toyota truck to weather the storm!

Crazy miles, i think u need 2 more cases in back then if u break down u wont run out for 2 days. I think the Toyota sienna is a great vehicle, it packs a ton of gear, you can live in it and its one of the most stable vehicles i ever driven. My friend just bought one and i bet he agrees, and he likes to drive all over. I'm thinking of making one my work vehicle. What upsets me is today doesn't sell north america some of their awesome work vans, they sell them to other countries. Very frustrating we have to buy work vehicles we don't want. Just like some motorcycles we cant buy in north America.

I don't understand why atf in coolant would in any way harm an engine. The transmission is shot, ok. But the engines' cooling system just got the best douche'n of its life. Flush it, call it good. I ran a Chevy 350 with blown head gaskets (oil in coolant, no coolant in oil) for years. I always said it had a very well lubricated coolant system. Also. 3rd gens are indestructible. You just need a manual. My 98 sr5 5 speed has 260k miles, and everything works mint. Current daily.

@@JimmyMeatwhistle They are EXACTLY like the ones in your 4Runner so you'll feel right at home. Those retro climate controls are brilliant and I'm glad Toyota doesn't change them with all the refreshes the 70 Series gets. In Canada, a vehicle has to be only 15 years old for it to be imported, not 25 like in the US so you Canadians will get your hands on some 70 Series Cruisers before the Americans can buy them all up. 😂 Where I live I could import a brand new one right now (for a big price in taxes) but they have to meet emissions standards of new vehicles so I can only import the 1GR-FE version, not the naturally aspirated 1HZ 4.2L IDI straight-six diesel that can run on used cooking oil, but it's still a bulletproof 70 Series.👍 Toyota just recently unveiled the 2.8L diesel version with a 6-speed auto which is basically the powertrain from the Hilux but those modern diesels don't age well with emissions control issues and they require only good quality diesel but they will likely make ones without diesel emissions hardware for Africa so you can even get one of those in 15 years.

Great info! I do see a few here, but they're usually right-hand drive. 1 day, I might look into bringing one over. But it has to be a left-hand drive for me. Mexico might be an option 🤔. I love diesel, but no fun in -30.

@@JimmyMeatwhistle Interesting to hear that there are some already where you are! Those RHD ones are likely straight from Japan. The Middle East and West Africa are all LHD drive markets. In Mexico they don't sell the 70 Series, not now and possibly not in a long time I'm not sure, but not too far away places like the US territory Puerto Rico has the 70 Series on sale. Further south, Central and South America also have it on sale. Looks like the 1GR-FE is perfect for you then! Just a heads-up, it's the pre-Dual VVTi one with 237 hp, the one that was in the 4th gen 4Runner and FJ Cruiser, not the newest one in the 5th gen 4Runner making 267 hp. Torque is 266 lb-ft instead of 278 lb-ft. This is likely because it's from the 2009 update where it got an overhaul. Should still be a good bit more powerful than your 3rd gen and thst extra displacement means it has more torque.
