One thing I’m glad for is that Lupita has stuck around for as long as she has after her Oscar win. She could’ve easily been a flash-in-the-pan actress who won her Oscar and fell into obscurity. But she’s still out there, still knocking it out of the park, delivering excellent performances one after the other. Even when she has a film where the script isn’t that great, she seems like the one who’s trying most of everyone. The film world is such a better place with her in it.

I totally agree. I'm still shocked that Lupita was close to 30 when filming the movie. I thought she was 16 to 20. Currently, she looks around 25; she's 41, actually. After 35, extra pounds make one look younger. Maybe darker skin has the same effect. Excluding ones obesed with being tanned in their youth.

It was Oscar bias against genre films. Meanwhile she gets the win for arguably one of the most forgettable films ever made.

Lupita stole the show during that award season. She was serving fashion at every award show. A star was really born

The thing with Laura Dern, when she won, she was one of the governors of the acting branch of the Academy, who already had significant influence over the people choosing the award. She ran a solid campaign, and no one really tried to fight her for it.

People forget that having a popped-off TV show alongside the nominated film is a huge help. Just this year alone we had Emma Stone with The Curse and Poor Things and Jodie Foster with Nyad and True Detective

Lupita is Amazing

Lupita Nyong'o is one of the best performances in cinema for me. The raw emotion in her story and how harrowing her treatment was in it was only something someone of her calibre could demonstrate.

I'm glad Allison Janney won the Oscar, in I Tonya it's hard to believe that was even her. Everyone had been wanting to give her an Oscar as she had been consistently good for so long in movies and TV and Laurie Metcalf just didn't have the same narrative. Big Little Lies season two had been airing around the same time as Marriage Story premiered so that helped Laura Dern win, she's clearly been better in other movies plus her parents are Hollywood legends. It's so cool that nearly every actresses in The Help are Oscar winners. And even though she didn't win, I'm happy Jacki Weaver was nominated for her chilling turn in the small Australian drama Animal Kingdom.

I think for the fifth supporting nom it might have been either Janelle Monae for Hidden Figures or Greta Gerwig for 20th Century Women. Either way it would have been a surprise nom as all 5 of these seemed to be locked so if Viola had gone Lead instead of supporting that 5th slot would have been a wild card more than likely.

Part of what helped Dern is that she's been in Hollywood for so many years (part nepo baby but also a very respected actress in multiple genres). I also remember hearing someone say that this kind of Hollywood divorce lawyer was something that a lot of people in the business recognized.

Here's the reasons why I believe Regina King won the Oscar that year despite missing both SAG & BAFTA. 1. Outside of King, there really was no support for anyone else that season. Emma Stone had won 2 years prior for Lala Land, Marina De Tavira, the nomination was the win itself, no one really wanted to give Amy Adams her Oscar for such a thankless role in Vice . And Rachel Weicsz could've won if The Favorite had performed better throughout the season. And I do think her win at BAFTA was just a BAFTA thing. 2. Regina King had been putting in great performances for years prior to Beale Street. She was great in this show called Southland, She was great in the final season of The Leftovers, and she won 2 Emmys for this ABC show called American Crime, and she managed to win 2 more Emmys after her Oscar win

I absolutely agree with you about Helen Hunt. She was wonderful in the The Sessions and was my pick as well. Anne deservedly won for Les Mis, but as much as I'm glad Kate Winslet (one of my favorite actresses ever) won an Oscar, Rachel Getting Married is the film that Anne Hathaway should have won for.

This channel has shown me how frequent category fraud is, like it's ridiculous. Strategically putting certain performances in the wrong category to increase their chances of winning should not be allowed. Look at 1984's Amadeus. Both F. Murray Abraham and Tom Hulce were nominated for Best Actor, even though that meant that only one of them could win (which Abraham did). Same with Julianne Moore in The Hours, like come on, she was just as much a lead actress in that movie as Nicole Kidman (and Meryl Streep).

Regarding Les Mis: a friend who had seen the movie twice before desperately wanted me to see the movie. I love musicals, but I was like "eh" on the trailers. But, I went. I love Hugh Jackman. I like Russell Crowe. I like Anne Hathaway and don't understand the hostility she gets. But, I was pretty much having none of this movie. Then, when the ending comes, my friend just starts sobbing, and I'm a girl who tears up at the slightest things, and I'm looking at my friend going "Why? What am I missing?" I start looking around the theater, and EVERYBODY is crying except for one guy who is doing the same thing I am -- looking around the theater baffled. Our eyes meet, and we exchange nods. Sadly, I never sought him out after the movie, because I think we could be soul mates.

My rankings: 10. Melissa Leo (The Fighter) - still think Amy Adams was better to this day in the same movie 9. Anne Hathaway (Les Miserables) - never a fan of the story or the musical, so it's less about her, although that is part of it, than the movie itself. 8. Alicia Vikander (The Danish Girl) 7. Octavia Spencer (The Help) - the performance and win haven't aged well 6. Regina King (If Beale Street Could Talk) 5. Laura Dern (Marriage Story) - others may not like it, but it's a terrific character, imo. 4. Patricia Arquette (Boyhood) 3. Lupita Nyong'o (12 Years a Slave) - her breakout role steals the movie 2. Viola Davis (Fences) - You can tell she knows the material, having done the play with Denzel, and her last monologs to Cory is subtle and yet weary at the same time. 1. Allison Janney (I, Tonya) - her performance as LaVona still makes me upset, but that's a good thing, because that's what the character should do.

Leo would’ve been 10 for me (and I’ve seen all of them). It just didn’t hit with me. I like her a lot, especially in Homicide, but I just feel like she was too hammy.

Lupita needs more credit for other things she does as well. She is superb in Us. If you haven't watched A Quiet Place Day 1 please do so as everything is told on Lupita's incredible face.

I can’t see it happening for Lupita. IMO Blunt should have been nominated for her performance in QP 1: she won SAG that year but didn’t get further for an Oscar nom.

I thought Florence Pugh in LITTLE WOMEN was one of the most over-rated performances in recent years. Especially when you compare her with Kirsten Dunst in the 94 version. (Granted, she didn't play the character all the way through, but she was unforgettable and stole the show in every one of her scenes.)

You are so correct about Ex Machina. Sci-Fi doesn't stand a chance against most other genres, so many a superb performance, especially in sci-fi and fantasy and horror, get overlooked. Another reason I detest most biopics (which are nearly all "period dramas"). Even in the past ten years, we've gotten some exquisite performances in quite a few sci-fi, fantasy, and horror films, including Amy Adams in "Arrival", Toni Collette in "Hereditary", Vikander in "Ex-Machina", and Charlize Theron in "Mad Max" (how TF was she nominated for Bombshell and not Max?? F*in biopics! all her noms are for biopics!) The other voting actors should know better. Like I wonder, does Amy Adams snub sci-fi performances on her ballots?

I know some people like to bash Michelle Yeoh's win for EEAAO for 'WOKENESS RUINING HOLLYWOOD!!!!!", I firmly stand by that win not only being great for Asian representation but also for an Actress winning an Oscar for a Sci Fi Genre film.

If Beale Street Could Talk was truly overlooked (besides best supporting actress). I imagine people were wanting either an uplifting, beautiful movie or a very serious downer of a movie. It did neither and yet both, and brilliantly.

The Helen Hunt pick is so true. She is the soul of that film, so thoughtful, and tactful, honest and charming. Is a gentle, understated performance that deserved that win. Great choice!

Dern worn for Marriage Story because the Academy also wanted to award Renata Klein. Having said that, if she had won for Little Women it would have been so much better

Somewhat unrelated, the non-musical Les Miserables from 2019? Is my favorite.

And as much as I enjoyed Octavia Spencer in The Help, I'll go to my grave believing Jessica Chastain gave the better performance.

I think Davis is one of the few cases where she is right at the line between Lead and Supporting. One on hand, she is the main actress, and her character has her own arc. On the other hand, thanks to the long run time, she's in about 35%-40% of the film, and there are large portions of this film where her character does not influence the story at all. (Compared with Ma Rainey, where her character is felt even when she's absent from the screen.)

I take it that you are not a big fan of "Oscar Bait" performances. But whether you love it or hate it, the Academy loves it when an actress (whether for leading or supporting) literally goes all in for a role, and the mindset ain't going anywhere!

Viola Davis should have been nominated for the lead actress category. She was the female LEAD character in Fences. I think she would have one if she was in the lead category and the Naomie Harris could have won best supporting actress for Moonlight because she was phenomenal

I haven't seen some of these movies, but I would rank them as follows 🤔 Lupita was definitely the best performance but she wasn't my favorite. Janney would be my favorite very closely followed by Spencer. Then Melissa Leo and Anne Hathaway

Rest of the movie aside, I definitely think Anne Hathaway deserved the win for “Les Mis”.

I think it’s the studios who decide based on the For your consideration campaign. Viola should have received and won Best Leading Actress, but based on her last nomination they wanted to make sure it’s a for sure win.

@kashaud17 oh it definitely is the studio. Olivia Colman decided she was going to go for best actress in the favorite even though Emma stone and Rachel Weiss were both the co leads really. I don't think it should be up to them though! There should be guidelines in place to make this way more clear and to help eliminate category fraud

Oh wow! I had never even thought about this, but it's shocking to realise I don't love any of the 2010s winners in Best Supporting Actress. I've never cared to revisit any of these films. I've never cared to even KZread a single scene of any of those performances. I remember seeing The Fighter twice in a movie theatre at the time and thinking that Leo is hilarious. Lupita is a great talent but she's a borderline one-dimensional cameo in 12 Years a Slave. She should've won an Oscar for US. Octavia won for playing a slave-maid... I mean... she's playing a more fascinating character in Hidden Figures. Don't get me started on Viola Davis and her "Look At Me! I'm a dramatic MASTERCLASS" trend. Dramatic Viola is doing the same thing over and over and over again. I prefer funny Viola in Ma Rainey's Black Bottom for instance. I'm not sure what part of Regina King's performance is "great" ... this is a very typical, very standard, and very forgettable performance. And if there's a win I completely disagree with, it has to be Allison Janney in I, Tonya - absolutely one-dimensional, she feels like the villain in a Cartoon Network animated series and never comes across as a real person.

Allison Janney is hysterical in Drop Dead Gorgeous if you haven’t seen it. (Also has Amy Adams!) I’m glad someone else feels the same about Les Miz. I thought Hathaway was amazing, and quite liked Eddie Redmayne and Samantha Barks, but overall, the movie was meh.

The Danish Girl was a joke, and i was rooting for Jennifer to win for American Hustle. I found that performance way better than Silver Linings. Glad for Lupita though she killed it and im glad shes still kickin ass.

Really enjoyable video. Just one thing, I’ve always found Regina King’s Oscar totally undeserved. She stood out for me in Beale Street for all the wrong reasons. She jumped right out the period. I’ve enjoyed her work in other things but never liked this one.

Lupita's face during "SlapGate" at the Oscars summed up the awkwardness in the room. Her roles are fantastic but it's that moment that sticks out to me the most.

Alicia's win is rather bitter than bitter sweet because she was a co-lead of The Danish girl, not a side character. Her best supporting actress nom should have been more for Ex-machina. Same with Rooney for Carol, that category was full of frauds.
