I never knew about these DOS utils for the K62 during its time! Then again I stopped bothering with DOS around 1998 or so after I upgraded my Cyrix 686. Even though you can pull all of this off with a K6, I kind of feel like the best bet for the most passionate of vintage gamer would be a dedicated DOS machine. Maybe a P100 or K5 cpu and a voodoo 1 or voodoo rush to play the DOS glide titles. Its more of an investment sure, but far less headaches in the end imho. Great Video though and great work!!

The highest I got my K6-III+ was around 550 MHz before things started to get iffy. Paired it with quite a few GPU's including the nVidia Geforce 2 Ultra, which was a monster of a card in terms of memory bandwidth. It was also bloody heavy lol. This combo allowed me to play GTA III at higher resolutions with lots of detail, and it played fantastic! Just couldn't put it down. I later upgraded the GPU to a nVidia Geforce 4 Ti 4200, which whilst being reasonably fast was held back somewhat by the CPU's weak FPU compared to the competition. GTA Vice City struggled whenever the screen got rammed, especially with lots of explosions and smoke effects. If memory serves me right I also managed to run Far Cry on the same rig, but again you had to be careful what settings to use as it really wasn't the best CPU. Some folks posted stories of them getting their CPU upto and beyond 700 MHz, but to be honest you could see the writing on the wall..it just wasn't fast enough in terms of raw FPU performance. What really nailed it for me was when Icr saw an AMD Duron - supposedly a 'budget' processor - running the same games at such a speed I had to catch my breath. But there again, the K6-III+ was able to keep Super 7 alive for a long time..way longer than Intel's best offerings. One thing I really liked about the K6-III/III++ however, was faster loading thanks to its 256KB L2 cache. Your board's L2 cache effectively became L3 (albeit running at the FSB speed) once you added this CPU, for even more speed. Then you could in some cases, increase the FSB from 33 MHz to 37.5 in order to obtain faster I/O performance. My board had an 83 MHz FSB option but I never used that for fear of destroying the hard drive. But even without this, general I/O performance felt so snappy..No wonder they were so popular in servers. Happy days :)

Another option for a single sound card solution is a soundblaster Live! which has excellent dos drivers and good sounding midi support, can use the "waveblaster" option in games that have it like Duke 3D. Although having the Vortex 2 for the A3D is definitely a bonus.

I went with a very similar setup, 4MB Riva 128 instead of the Voodoo 3, AWE64 paired with the Aopen AW744L instead of the Aureal 2 because I simply found the Aureal 2 far more useful in my Athlon XP machine in games like Half Life and Quake 3 at high resolution. The A3D option in most games just crunched the fps because the K6-2+ seemed too weak to handle it. The Sensaura 3D sound on the Aopen isnt really that bad but i tend to leave it off. I'm playing more dos games than windows games on this gear, so i'm mainly using either the OPL in dos or the XG midi (suprisingly amazing) in windows. The AWE64 for me is just about using the SB16 capabilities and the odd AWE32 soundtrack (which i must say can be really nice - i spent a good 50 hrs playing X-Com because the music was just so good). Both real nice cards. Overall a great dos pc. Cheers, your videos as usual point people in a good direction :)

Thanks. My first capable self-built computer was Socket 7 AMD K6-2 266Mhz. with Riva TNT 2 M64 and 4x32MB EDO RAM. It was capable of NFS 4. Before that I was building 2-3-and 486 machines while my friends had Pentium III already. I remember that the Socket 7 machine played even somewhat better than some cheap PIII-s. Brings back alot of memories... I'd suggest trying to make as good LGA775 machine as possible. You could mod it to Socket 771 and have some high-end Xeon in there. Iguess these can take even the latest Geforce 1080. I wonder if a good LGA775 PC could play all the new games.

Nice video series, phil. Thanks for all the insight. Would have been great, if you could have explored the possibilities of the DFI board and "Throttle.exe". It's a tool that can further slow down a machine by issuing some ACPI commands. The VIA MVP chipset is a good choice as it supports throttling in even finer steps as other chipsets. On some board, you can control the throttling through the BIOS, so the throttle tool isn't needed with them. Does the DFI BIOS support this?

Great versatile choices. Many of my vintage 1990's systems use the Voodoo 3 3000 as the Voodoo 3 3500 is harder to get and much more expensive.I'd like to have one someday though.I like your final sound card choices as that is what I tend to often use in my systems as well. Most of my vintage systems however are less versatile than this build of yours but more year specific like I'll have a couple each of 1999,1998,1997,1996,1995 etc systems. These I prefer to have components in them generally from that year.I make some exceptions however and put in larger capacity hard drives. One combat flight sim that I loved with 3dfx cards and it looked so much better with a 3Dfx card in glide rather than in Direct X was European Air War from Microprose which is a combat flight simulation about the air battles in Europe during World War II.It was highly popular for flight sim players back then.Lot's of people love classic warbirds just like many people love classic cars.War well no love for that but if its a game and has some historical aspects to it than its AOK.

A Slot 1 machine. Not sure about the clock speed, I find 500 MHz too slow seeing you have so many choices. Might go with a 700 or 800 MHz or something like that. I think Nvidia will easily win that one :D

  • @RetroPcCupboard

I believe he would route the CD audio to his external mixer. But you could just connect the analog CD audio to the ISA card and either use the digital output to the PCI soundcard (if it supports that) or just enable digital playback of CD audio in Windows. No cable required then, as it goes down the IDE cable as digiital data.

Apart from that it sounds like the typical speed issue the whole gameport technology suffers from though I can't come up with a reason why the 3dfx patch would influence that. Really strange or just coincidence. Maybe you should try to find one of those to buy or try another/additional soundcard if that gameport works better. Your thumbnail says Part 5 instead of 6! Just thought I'd let you know. I'd say that overall the Matrox G400 Max is the best - great output, decent performance, dual monitors. Part of this video sounds like an episode of the Computer Chronicles with Stuart Chiefet!

+PhilsComputerLab Hey Phil, I'm curious as to how the most powerful AGP cards run on SS7, and how they compare to this lineup here. All AGP Nvidia cards will run on Windows 9x, and the fastest Radeon that I'm aware will run on Windows 9x based systems is the 9800. Can you do a video on that?

They will be CPU limited. I used pretty powerful cards, and you can see this in the videos, the faster ones are often slower because they are not tuned for these old games and also you have to use newer, slower, drivers.

+jamesoleruster best card I've got is a GeForce 7950 GT - probably one of the best AGP cards ever made, I suppose I could drop it into a Pentium II if that counts. I don't have an SS7 system anymore, both of mine broke, I think. One overheated and refused to start up, and the other works on a blue moon (once every few months or so it'll decide to work correctly and boot, but if you have to shut it down for any reason, it'll never start up again!).

But what you have here is the quintessential Ultimate Windows 98 PC. Ballance performance with compatibility and productivity.

I think so also. Like I said in the video, I actually picked too new games for the benchmarks. It's just that the older ones don't have any decent benchmarks built in. Learnt that lesson, might have to use FRAPS instead :) But all the slightly older games, especially with Glide support, run like a dream. Plus DOS bonus :)

That rubber band on the fan will become like uncooked dried spaghetti, only more fragile, when it oxidizes in 6 months to a few years. (the seem to oxidize much faster under tension than relaxed in their container)
