I have a LedLenser for tunnels (in the narrowboat). The variable zoom is great for that. For running, I have the Silva Ultra 4.

I've owned two petzl myo xp's for alpine climbing and hiking. Loved it to bits. Only downside it was not very durable in the long run. The second one mysteriously died and the problem was never found. I agree the Petzl swift sounds like the best overall choice, though I worry about long term durability. My petzls have not stood the test of time well in long term durability. I personally like head torches with greater capacity, thus have more a battery pack on the backside of the head. Overall though I think they're odd to use and I've always had positioning issue in the long run as the elasticity of the headband wears off fast yearly. I personally think black diamond has always been ludicrously expensive. I would never go for them unless I had a surpluss of cash to spend.

Black Diamond Storm, non rechargeable, 4xAAA, no rear battery pack. The batteries outlast anything I've ever tried, all through the night and beyond sunrise and is plenty bright enough, can't remember the lumens. The colours on this newer Black Diamond are there for uses other than trail running, preserving night vision or map reading etc.

Worth noting that for any headtorches with a red light feature (designed for reading maps at night without losing night vision, not for any other purposes), the contours on an OS Map turn invisible when you shine that red light at it. This can cause sadness - I'm bad enough at navigating before the contours vanish.

Yep, hard to beat the Swift RL. It's hard to explain how a torch turning 'down' can be so exciting! Same (reactiv tech) with Nao but that's feeling a bit old now - and double the weight of the Swift.

Trail Speed 4XT warning. I bought but had to return the Silva Trail Speed 4XT in January 2021 as it could not sustain its high or even Medium power output due to thermal throttling. I estimated I was only getting about 200 lumens after it throttled. I had to keep turning it back to full every 2 minutes or i didn't have enough light to run on. perhaps mine was faulty but the Amazon reviews suggested it wasn't just me. shame, the format was lovely with the battery in the bag. and at full power it was amazing, but just didn't sustain that level for very long. First 20 minutes of a run was ok, and then the thermal issues kicked in and I was constantly turning it back up to have enough light to see where I was going.

Sadly this headlight seems to hang be an Achilles heal with defective Burton from what I’ve read, and I’m sad to read it after becoming open to battery enclosed rechargeable. And then when I learned about continuous and battery banks I figured I still may try it.

I have contacted them - as its out of warranty and the battery cannot be replaced, it's a bin job. They have offered a 15% discount code. A shame, it is a great tourch just not environmentally friendly if you have a battery issue unlike the Petzl which has a replaceable battery.

Update * As Biolite no longer sell direct to the UK, they are 'unfortunately' unable to send me the discount code as originally offered. Think I'll replace the torch with another brand. The Petzl looks like the best bet.
